Toilet Paper (Cao Zhi)
This is made from rice straw and used by southern goods shops to wrap items. It comes in two thicknesses: thick and thin. The thick variety is called "Tongban Caozhi" (Copper-plate Toilet Paper) and can be used for medicinal purposes.
Eruption of Rash
*Baicao Jing* (Mirror of Hundred Herbs): Take half a sheet of folded toilet paper (specifically the thick kind used by southern goods shops for wrapping), decoct it, and drink the liquid. Its ability to vent and expel rash toxins is superior to that of *Chengliu* (Tamarisk Twig).
Infant Umbilical Ulcer
*Buyao Liangfang* (Excellent Prescriptions Without Medication): Immediately burn large toilet paper into ash and apply it to the affected area to prevent transformation into epilepsy or madness. Alternatively, add equal parts of calcined alum (*Kufan*) and dragon bone ash (*Longgu*), and sprinkle with a small amount of musk (*Shexiang*).
Intestinal Wind with Hematochezia
*Buyao Liangfang*: Burn coarse toilet paper into ash, mix well with rock sugar, and take with boiling water.
Fubei Tuan (Pearl Powder Ball)
*Jingyan Guangji* (Extensive Collection of Experienced Prescriptions): Treats "Yang'er Feng" (mumps or epilepsy-like conditions) with 100% efficacy. Use one tael of Chuan Fubei (Fritillariae Bulbus) from which the heart has been removed (ground into powder and sifted). Spread this powder over one hundred sheets of large toilet paper, sifting once per layer, totaling one hundred siftings. Sew the sheets together with thread, and boil them in four bowls of water until the water is dry. Each early morning, take one sheet, roll it into a ball, warm it near fire, soak it in boiling water, and drink the juice. Complete recovery occurs after finishing the dose; the effect is miraculous.
This refers to toilet paper discarded on the ground after being used to wipe feces in pit latrines. *Tongshou Lu* states: Among the syndromes of Shanghan (Cold Damage), there is one named "Gedi Shanghan," which cannot be cured without using this type of paper.
Find forty-nine sheets of this paper, burn them into ash and grind into powder. Decoct with two bowls of water until one bowl remains, remove the dregs, and drink. Effective.
This refers to the paper used to seal the mouths of wine jars; aged paper is preferred. Because it absorbs much wine vapor, it becomes moldy and less tough, and its original "ashiness" (dryness/astringency) is removed.
Treat sudden bleeding from the skin. *Tongshou Lu*: Tear this paper into pieces like willow catkins, spread it over the bleeding site, and the bleeding will stop immediately.
This refers to grass found in the mud at the base of liquor jars. *Cihang Huoren Shu* includes this substance for medicinal use, so it is added here.
Treat Jian Dao Feng (Shear Wind, often referring to tetanus or infection from sharp metal injuries). *Huoren Shu* states: The symptom involves red nodules appearing on the waist, feeling as if tightly bound and painful. Prick with a needle to bleed, then take this grass mixed with salt, rub it on the area to induce sweating, and relief follows immediately.
In the Earth section of *Bencao Gangmu*, there is an entry for Wu Guwa (Black Ancient Tile), but it does not mention treating furuncles.
Treat Infant Furuncles
*Jisheng Kuhai* (Sea of Bitter Sea for Saving Lives): For formed furuncles, grind ancient tiles from many years ago into powder. Decoct fine tea leaves to make a very concentrated juice, mix with the tile powder, and apply externally. Leave the head of the furuncle open/uncovered, and it will dissipate.
Gong Jie (Arching Furuncle)
Heat a tile piece over fire, quench it seven times in vinegar, grind into powder, and mix with rapeseed oil for external application.
Xiao Ke (Wasting-Thirst / Diabetes)
Take two tiles from an old roof, wash clean, crush them, and decoct in water to make a concentrated juice. Warm and drink a small cup after meals (*Tongshou Lu*).
