(Song Dynasty *Jiayou Bencao*)
[Collected Explanations] Li Shizhen said: The pure essence of Ying Qi (Nutritive Qi) transforms into Jing (Essence), which gathers in the Mingmen (Gate of Life). The Mingmen is the residence of Jing and Blood. When a man reaches sixteen years old, his Jing fills one sheng and six liu. If nurtured and replenished, it can reach three sheng; if damaged and lost, it will be less than one sheng. It is called "water" because Jing cannot form without Blood; it is called "treasure" because Jing cannot be nourished without Qi. Therefore, when Blood is abundant, Jing grows; when Qi gathers, Jing becomes full. Charlatans bewitch fools, engaging in coitus with virgins to collect their Jing, drinking female seminal fluid; or mixing their own Jing with the Tian Gui (Menstrual Fluid) of women, swallowing and ingesting it. They call it Lead and Mercury, considering it a secret prescription, indulging in lust, willingly eating filth, and shortening their natural lifespan. Alas! How extremely foolish this is, whom else can they blame? According to Bao Jingxiang: Shen (Spirit) is the master of Qi; when Shen moves, Qi follows. Qi is the mother of Water; when Qi gathers, Water forms. Thus, in the human body, when the heart of greed moves, saliva is produced; when the heart of sorrow moves, tears are produced; when the heart of shame moves, sweat is produced; when the heart of desire moves, Jing is produced.
[Flavor and Properties] Sweet, warm.
[Indications] Mixed with white eagle droppings, it eliminates scars (Tao Hongjing). Applied to bleeding metal wounds and scalds/burns (Li Shizhen).
[Attached Prescriptions] Three old prescriptions, two new ones. Black moles on the face: Apply human Jing mixed with white eagle droppings; it heals in a few days (*Qianjin Fang*). Flesh tumors on the body: Take one he of human Jing, store it in a green bamboo tube, roast it over fire, and collect the juice with a vessel. Seal it tightly. Apply frequently until effective, then stop (*Zhouhou Fang*). Scrofula and toxic swellings: Apply female seminal fluid frequently. Scalds and burns: Relieves pain, facilitates healing without scarring. *Zhouhou Fang*: Apply human Jing and white eagle droppings daily. *Qianjin Fang*: Apply female seminal fluid frequently.
(From *Bencao Gangmu*)
[Names] Ling Ye (Spiritual Fluid, *Bencao Gangmu*), Shen Shui (Divine Water, *Bencao Gangmu*), Jin Jiang (Golden Elixir, *Bencao Gangmu*), Li Quan (Sweet Spring). Li Shizhen said: There are four orifices under the human tongue, two connecting to Heart Qi and two connecting to Kidney Fluid. Heart Qi flowing into the sublingual area is called Shen Shui; Kidney Fluid flowing into the sublingual area is called Ling Ye. Daoists refer to it as Golden Elixir and Jade Nectar. Overflowing it is called Li Quan; gathering it is called Hua Chi (Splendid Pool); dispersing it is called Jin Ye (Body Fluids); descending it is called Gan Lu (Sweet Dew). It irrigates the Zang-Fu organs and moistens the limbs. Therefore, cultivators swallow saliva and absorb Qi, a practice called "Clear Water Irrigating the Spiritual Root." If a person does not spit for a whole day, Essence and Qi remain constant, and the complexion does not wither; if one spits for a long time, it damages Essence and Qi, leading to Lung disease and dry, withered skin. Thus it is said that spitting from afar is better than spitting nearby, but not spitting at all is best. When a person is ill, Heart and Kidney do not interact, Kidney Water does not ascend, so Body Fluids become dry and True Qi is depleted. Qin Yueren's *Nan Jing* states: The Kidney governs the Five Fluids. Entering the Liver, it becomes tears; entering the Lungs, it becomes nasal mucus; entering the Spleen, it becomes thin saliva; entering the Heart, it becomes sweat; originating from within (the Kidneys), it is spit/saliva.
[Flavor and Properties] Sweet, salty, neutral, non-toxic.
[Indications] Sores, swelling, scabies, tinea, axillary odor, and muteness occurring at dawn (5-7 AM); apply and rub frequently. It also brightens the eyes, reduces nebulae, reduces swelling, detoxifies, expels evil influences, and precipitates mercury (Li Shizhen).
[Elucidation] Li Shizhen said: Saliva is transformed from human Essence and Qi. If a person rinses their mouth and brushes their teeth every morning, washes their eyes with saliva, and frequently licks their thumb nails with their tongue to wipe their eyes, over time it makes vision clear and unblurred. It can also reduce nebulae. For anyone with corneal opacity, having someone lick the affected eye several times a day, over time the True Qi steams through, naturally dispersing toxicity and clearing the opacity. *Fang Dongyang Fang* states: If a person dies from sleep paralysis (nightmare suffocation) and cannot cry out, bite firmly on the heel or the side of the thumb nail, spit frequently on their face, and call them slowly; they will regain consciousness. According to *Huang Zhen Ri Chao*: During the Jin Dynasty, Zong Dingbo from Nanyang met a ghost at night and asked him. The ghost replied, "I am a newly deceased ghost." Asked what the ghost feared, it said, "It dislikes having saliva spat on its ears." Zong Dingbo seized it quickly, and the ghost turned into a sheep. Fearing transformation, he spat heavily upon it and sold it for a thousand coins. This shows that ghosts truly fear saliva.
[Attached Prescriptions] Four new prescriptions. Ingrown toenail/finger nail swelling: Mix saliva with alum sand, knead with flour to make a bowl shape, fill with saliva, add a little realgar powder, and soak the finger in it; it heals in one day (*Qianjin Fang*). Warts on hands and feet: Stir-fry white millet rice flour in an iron pan until red, grind into powder, mix with saliva from many people, apply thickly (one cun), and it will disappear (*Zhouhou Fang*). Axillary odor: Rub axillae with one's own saliva several times, remove dirt with fingernails, wash hands with hot water several times; repeat for about ten days to cure. Snakebite: Immediately wash away blood with urine, then take saliva from the mouth and apply frequently (*Yifang Miaoyao* by Yang Gong).
