**[Names]** Juejing (Menstruation, from *Suwen*), Tiangui (Heavenly Water, from *Suwen*), Hongqian (Red Lead). Li Shizhen said: Women belong to the Yin category and are primarily governed by Blood. Their blood corresponds upward to Taiyin (Hand-Taiyin Lung Meridian or Taiyin Qi) and downward to the sea tides. The moon has waxing and waning phases, and the tides have morning and evening fluctuations. Menstruation occurs once a month, corresponding to these natural phenomena; hence it is called Yueshui (Moon Water), Yuexin (Moon Trust), and Juejing (Menstrual Period). "Jing" means constant, referring to having a fixed routine. "Tiangui" refers to the principle of Heaven generating Water in the first phase. Heretical practitioners call it "Hongqian," which is a false name. For women, menstruation occurring once a month is normal; if it comes early or late, or flows freely or is blocked, it is pathological. There are also variations from the norm not mentioned by ancients that must be known. Some women experience only epistaxis (nosebleed) or bleeding from eyes and ears during their period; this is called Ni Xing (Reverse Flow). Some menstruate once every three months; this is called Ju Jing (Residing Period), commonly known as An Ji (Seasonal). Some menstruate once a year; this is called Bi Nian (Avoiding Year). Some never menstruate throughout life yet can conceive; this is called An Jing (Hidden Period). Some continue to menstruate monthly after conception and give birth; this is called Sheng Tai (Abundant Fetus), commonly known as Gou Tai (Dirt Fetus). Some suffer sudden heavy bleeding several months into pregnancy without miscarriage; this is called Lou Tai (Leaking Fetus). Although these can be explained by excess or deficiency of Qi and Blood, they differ from the norm. At age fourteen (two sevens), Tiangui arrives; at age forty-nine (seven sevens), Tiangui ceases; this is normal. Some girls bear children at twelve or thirteen, as recorded in *Chu Jishi*; for example, the daughter of Su Daqing from Pingjiang conceived at twelve. Some women bear children at fifty or sixty, as recorded in *Liao Shi*; for instance, the wife of Ji Pu gave birth to two sons and one daughter over sixty. These are extreme abnormalities. Medical practitioners should pay attention to such cases.
**[Flavor and Properties]** Salty, neutral, non-toxic.
**[Indications]** Antidote for poisoned arrows and relapse due to sexual activity after female illness (Tao Hongjing).
**Menstrual Cloth**
**[Indications]** For traumatic wounds with profuse bleeding, apply heated cloth as a compress. Also treats bites from tigers, wild wolves, and embedded arrowheads (Chen Cangqi).
**[Elucidation]** Li Shizhen said: When women enter their menstrual cycle, they produce foul-smelling fluids; thus, gentlemen avoid them because they are unclean and can damage Yang Qi, causing disease. Those preparing medicinal plasters, observing abstinence during smallpox outbreaks, or cultivating life and nature all avoid contact for this reason. *Bowuzhi* states: In Funan, there is a strange art where blades cannot cut flesh; applying menstrual blood to the blade causes death. This is because the filthy fluid destroys the body's Shen Qi (Spiritual Energy), so it is taboo in compounding medicines. This view is well-founded. Currently, heretical alchemists deceive fools by using rituals to collect the first menstrual blood of virgin girls for consumption, calling it "Xiantian Hongqian" (Primordial Red Lead). They invent elaborate names and combinations, claiming it is the "Jinhua" (Golden Flower) in *Cantong Qi* and the "Shoujing" (First Period) in *Wuzhen Pian*. Fools believe this, swallowing filth thinking it is a secret recipe, often resulting in skin eruptions (Dan Zhen), which is truly lamentable and disgusting. According to Xiao Liaozhen's *Jindan Shi*: "One type of heterodox sect loves lust, forcing Yang to harvest Yin. Holding Tiangui in the mouth calls it medicine..."
**[Attached Prescriptions]** Seven old prescriptions, five new ones.
**Relapse of Heat Disease (Laofu):** After a man recovers from a heat disease, if he engages in intercourse and the condition relapses, causing sudden retraction of the testicles into the abdomen and excruciating intestinal pain, burn the woman's red menstrual cloth to powder, take one Fangcunbi (approx. 2-3 grams) with warm water to settle the symptoms. (*Meishi Fang*)
**Female Labor Jaundice (Nulao Huangdan), shortness of breath and deep voice:** Burn menstrual cloth and blood-stained garments to ash, take one Fangcunbi with wine, twice daily. Cure within three days. (Meng Shen's *Bixiao Fang*)
**Severe Cholera (Huoluan):** Burn the menstrual cloth of a virgin girl mixed with blood to ash, take one Fangcunbi with wine. Use this if other methods fail. (*Qianjin Fang*)
**Pediatric Convulsions with Fever:** Mix menstrual blood with Qingdai (Indigo Naturalis), administer one Qian (approx. 3-5 grams) mixed with fresh well-water. It cures upon entry. Adjust dosage according to the child's age. (*Puji Fang*)
**To Prevent Wife Jealousy:** Wrap a toad in a woman's menstrual cloth and bury it five inches deep in the ground, one foot away from the toilet entrance. (Zhang Hua's *Bowuzhi*)
**Carbuncles on the Back and All Swellings/Poisons:** Equal parts of soil from swallow nests, rat burrows, Ulmus davidiana bark (Yubai Pi), and Trichosanthes root (Gualou Gen) are powdered. Mix with water extracted from washing women's menstrual cloth and apply to the swelling. Change when dry. For ulcerated cases, seal the perimeter. Cure in five days. (*Qianjin Fang*)
**Male Genital Sores:** Caused by intercourse during menstruation leading to genital ulceration. Burn the blood-stained undergarment of a virgin until charred but retaining essence, powder it, mix with sesame oil, and apply.
**Antidote for Poisoned Arrows:** People in Jiaozhou use scorched copper for arrowheads coated with poison; upon injury, the wound boils and rots, destroying bone quickly. Taking menstrual blood and urine juice can detoxify it. (*Bowuzhi*)
**Embedded Arrowheads or Blood Stasis in Flesh:** Burn women's menstrual cloth to ash, take one Fangcunbi with wine. (*Qianjin Fang*)
**Horse Blood Entering Wounds or Horsewhip Scratches:** Apply women's menstrual blood topically for miraculous effect. (Yao Sengtan's *Jiyan Fang*)
**Tiger, Wild Wolf Bite Wounds:** Powder menstrual cloth and apply. (Chen Cangqi)
