(Compendium of Materia Medica)
[Names] Gang (Wheel Hub Grease).
[Indications] Stealing a lamp basin from a wealthy family on the Lantern Festival (Shangyuan) and placing it under the bed can facilitate conception (Li Shizhen, citing Yunfu Qunyu).
(Compendium of Materia Medica)
[Names] Dengwo You (Lamp Wick Oil).
[Properties and Flavor] Acrid, Bitter, Toxic.
[Indications] Various acute conditions, such as Zhongfeng (Wind Stroke), Hou Bi (Sore Throat with Swelling and Obstruction), and Tan Jue (Phlegm Syncope caused by obstruction of Qi mechanism). Use a goose feather quill to sweep the oil into the throat to induce vomiting for immediate effect. Also applied externally to treat various malignant sores, Jie Xuan (Scabies and Tinea) (Li Shizhen).
[Additional Prescriptions] Two new prescriptions.
Breast Abscess: Stir-fried sesame seeds are crushed and mashed, then mixed with the oil residue at the bottom of the lamp basin for external application; the swelling will dissipate (Ji Xuan Fang).
Zouma Hou Bi (Rapidly Progressing Sore Throat): A poem states: "Acute sore throat and obstruction are most worrying; hastily take the oil contained in the lamp basin. For severe cases, drinking three or five sips is sufficient; this prescription was left by a perfected person."
(Song Dynasty Kai Bao Ben Cao)
[Correction] Merged into the entry for "Gang Zhong Gao" (Grease from Wheel Hub).
[Names] Chegu Zhi (Cheese Fat/Grease from Wheel Hub, Compendium), Zhou Zhi (Axle Grease, Compendium), Xia Zhi (Hub Cap Grease, Compendium), Gang Gao (pronounced 'gong').
Li Shizhen said: Gu refers to the axle. Xia refers to the gang (the central wooden hub of a wheel). This is the iron piece wrapping the axle head; frequently applying oil makes it slide smoothly without friction. The *Records of the Grand Historian* mentions "The people of Qi mocked Chunyu Kun as being like a roasted wheel hub," referring to this concept; understanding it as slippery/oily today is correct.
[Properties and Flavor] Acrid, Non-toxic.
[Indications] Sudden heart pain, Zhong E Qi (Poisoning by foul/evil qi); administer with hot wine. For wind stroke with mania, take an amount of grease the size of a chicken egg, dissolve it by stirring with hot vinegar, and ingest. It also treats Fu Ren Du Ru (Nursing Mother's Milk Stagnation) and Ru Yong (Mastitis); apply heated grease externally and ingest with hot wine (Kai Bao Ben Cao). Expels Gui Qi (Ghost Qi, referring to certain mental abnormalities or epidemic pathogens); melt and ingest with warm wine (Chen Cangqi). Treats Huo Luan (Cholera-like syndrome), Gu Du (Gu Poison), various abdominal pains during pregnancy, induces labor, calms fright, eliminates malaria, reduces swelling/toxicity, and treats various sores (Li Shizhen).
[Prescriptions] Eight old prescriptions, nine new prescriptions.
Zhong E Gu Du (Poisoning by Evil Qi and Gu Poison): Take Che Gang Zhi (grease from wheel hub) the size of a chicken egg, dissolve in wine, and ingest (Qian Jin Fang).
Ha Wa Gu Bing and Ke Dou Gu (Toad Gu and Tadpole Gu): Symptoms include abdominal distension and pain, dry mouth with desire for water, inability to eat, restlessness, and severe panting. Take half a jin of Che Xia Zhi, ingesting gradually until the Gu poison is expelled (Sheng Hui Fang).
Huo Luan Zhuan Jin (Cholera with Muscle Cramps): Accompanied by abdominal pain. Apply Che Gu Zhong Zhi (grease from inside the wheel hub) to the sole of the foot (Qian Jin Fang).
