**[Names]** Baicao (Ba Cao, White Grass) (*Shennong Bencao Jing*), Baigen (Bai Gen, White Root) (*Mingyi Bielu*), Huhé (Hu He, Rabbit Testicle) (*Shennong Bencao Jing*), Maorluan (Mao Er Luan, Cat Egg) (*Bencao Gangmu*), Kunlun (Kun Lun) (*Mingyi Bielu*).
Su Song stated: Bai Lian is rarely used in prescriptions for ingestion and alchemy, but is frequently used in formulas for astringing sores; hence its name Bai Lian.
Li Shizhen stated: "Huhé" (Rabbit Testicle) and "Maorluan" (Cat Egg) both describe its shape. "Kunlun" refers to its black skin.
**[Collection and Explanation]** *Mingyi Bielu* states: Bai Lian grows in the valleys of Mount Heng. The roots are harvested in February and August and dried in the sun.
Tao Hongjing stated: It grows everywhere in nearby regions. It is a vine; the root resembles *Atractylodis Rhizoma* (Baizhi, 白芷). It is sliced and threaded on bamboo sticks for sun-drying.
Zhen Gong stated: The root resembles *Asparagi Radix* (Tiandong, 天门冬). One plant has about ten roots beneath it; the skin is reddish-black, the flesh white, resembling *Paeoniae Radix Rubra* (Chishao, 赤芍), unlike *Atractylodis Rhizoma*.
Zheng Baosheng stated: It is a creeping vine with five leaves at the branch tips; it grows in various locations.
Su Song stated: It is now found in Jianghuai and the prefectures of Jing, Xiang, Huai, Meng, Shang, and Qi. Seedlings emerge in February, often growing as vines in forests with red stems and leaves resembling those of small mulberry trees. Flowers appear in May, and fruits mature in July. The roots are elongated like chicken or duck eggs, with three to five growing from one cluster; the skin is black and the flesh white. There is a variety called Chi Lian (Red Bai Lian); its flowers and fruits have identical functions, differing only in that both the interior and exterior are red.
**[Flavor and Properties]** Bitter, neutral, non-toxic. *Mingyi Bielu* states: Sweet, slightly cold. Xu Zhicai stated: Toxic.
Xu Zhicai stated: *Haematitum* (Daizhe Shi, 代赭石) serves as its guiding herb. It is incompatible with *Aconiti Lateralis Radix Preparata* (Wutou, 乌头).
**[Indications]** Carbuncles, sores, and ulcers; dissipates stagnant qi; relieves pain and reduces fever; treats redness of the eyes; pediatric convulsions, epilepsy, and warm malaria; swelling and pain in the female vagina; leukorrhea with red and white discharge (*Shennong Bencao Jing*). Kills fire toxins (*Mingyi Bielu*). Treats sores, traumatic injuries, and promotes wound healing.
**[Elucidation]** Tao Hongjing stated: Freshly harvested roots are crushed and applied to carbuncles, which is effective.
