(That is, millet)
[Odor and Taste] Salty, slightly cold, non-toxic. Li Shizhen said: Salty, bland.
Kou Zongshi said: Raw millet is difficult to digest. Cooked millet tends to stagnate qi, causing food retention (food stagnation), and generating parasites.
Su Gong said: Those with cold stomachs should not eat it in excess. Millet soaked in water until rotten damages the human body.
Rui said: Eating it together with apricot kernels causes vomiting and diarrhea. Geese that eat millet have heavy wings and cannot fly.
[Indications] Nourishes Kidney Qi, clears heat from the Spleen and Stomach, and benefits Yuan Qi (Original Qi). Aged millet: Bitter, cold. Treats heat-induced Xiao Ke (wasting-thirst syndrome) due to Stomach heat, and promotes urination (from *Bie Lu*).
Stops dysentery, suppresses heat caused by Danchi (mineral pills) (Meng Shen). Decocted in water and taken orally, it treats heat-type abdominal pain and epistaxis. Made into powder, mixed with water and filtered for juice, it resolves various toxins, treats Huoluan (cholera-like acute gastroenteritis) and muscle spasms entering the abdomen, and also treats sudden onset of "Ghost Strike" (referring to sudden fainting or convulsive disorders) (Su Gong). Resolves wheat toxicity, reduces fever (Shiliang). Treats regurgitation and heat-type dysentery. Eaten as porridge, it benefits the Dantian (Elixir Field).
[Innovation/Analysis] Tao Hongjing said: Aged millet refers to that stored for three to five years; it is particularly effective in relieving irritability and mental fullness, and those who take medicinal elixirs also consume it.
Kou Zongshi said: Since millet promotes urination, it can benefit the Spleen and Stomach.
Zhu Zhenheng said: Millet belongs to Water and Earth. The aged variety is hardest and most difficult to digest; it only becomes digestible when paired with Jiangshui (fermented grain water).
Li Shizhen said: The taste of millet is salty and bland, its nature is cold and descending/permeating downward. It is the grain corresponding to the Kidney, so it is suitable for consumption in Kidney diseases. Deficient heat, Xiao Ke (wasting-thirst), and dysentery are all manifestations of Kidney disease. By promoting diuresis and leaching out dampness, it drains pathogenic factors from the Kidney. It descends Stomach fire, so it is suitable for Spleen and Stomach diseases.
[Attached Prescriptions] Five old prescriptions, five new prescriptions.
Stomach Heat and Wasting-Thirst: Cook rice with aged millet and eat it; this is effective (*Shiyi Xinjing*).
Regurgitation and vomiting, weak Spleen and Stomach Qi, indigestion, inability to swallow liquids: Use half a sheng of millet, pound into powder, make pills the size of wu-tzu seeds (Cocculus trilobus seeds). Take seven pills, boiled thoroughly, add a little salt, and swallow with the juice on an empty stomach. Alternatively, some say: swallow after soaking in vinegar; if it goes down smoothly, the illness is cured (*Xinjing*).
Persistent Epistaxis: Take millet flour, decoct in water, and ingest (*Puji Fang*).
Infants on the seventh day after birth, to assist Gu Shen (Grain Spirit) and guide/dredge the intestines and stomach: Grind millet and cook into porridge with the consistency of maltose. Feed a small amount daily at dusk (Yao Hezhong's Prescription).
Childhood Chi Dan (Red Plaque/Dermatitis): Chew millet and apply topically (*Bingbu Shouji*).
Pediatric Chong She (Double Tongue/Glossitis): Chew millet and feed to the child (*Mi Lu*).
Foreign Body in Eye Not Exiting: Use seven grains of raw millet, chew thoroughly to extract juice, and wash the eye; the object will exit (*Zonglu*).
Scalds and Burns: Roast millet until charred, immerse in water, clarify, and boil the liquid until thick like syrup. Apply frequently; it relieves pain and fades scars. Another method: Half raw, half roasted, grind into powder, mix with wine, and apply (Cui Xinggong's *Zuoya*).
Bear or Tiger Claw Wounds: Chew millet and apply topically (Ge Shi's Formula).
Millet Washings (Suliangzhi)
[Indications] Sudden heat-type Huoluan (acute gastroenteritis), irritability, and thirst; drinking several sheng leads to immediate recovery. Smelly millet washings: Stop wasting-thirst, especially effective (Su Gong). Sour millet washings and sediment: Wash skin affected by pruritus and scabies, kill parasites. Ingesting them treats the five types of hemorrhoids. Decocted with stink dogwood bark, they treat pediatric Gan Ji dysentery (Su Gong).
[Attached Prescriptions] Two new prescriptions.
Heat-Induced Red and Swollen Eyes: Mix millet washing sediment (the most sour kind) and Sheng Di Huang (Rehmannia Root) in equal parts, grind evenly, spread on silk cloth (2 cun square), place on the eyes, and moxibustion/warm compress. Replace when dry.
Gan Sores and Tinea Capitis/Monthly Erosion: Apply cold-food festival millet washing sediment; this is effective (*Qianjin Fang*).
Millet Sugar
[Indications] Hemorrhoids, fistulas, and rectal prolapse; fumigate with other herbs combined with it (Li Shizhen).
Millet Sprouts/Nu (Sunu)
[Indications] Promotes urination in the Small Intestine, removes irritability (Li Shizhen).
[Innovation/Analysis] Li Shizhen said: Sunu refers to the black coal-like substance produced when millet stalks form ears. It was not used in ancient formulas. *Taiping Shenghui Fang* treats obstruction and blockage in the Small Intestine with irritability and restlessness using Sunu Tang: Use Sunu, bitter bamboo whiskers, adzuki bean leaves, honey-fried Licorice Root each 1 liang, Juncus effusus (rush pith) 10 cun, white part of green onion 5 cun, seven copper coins. Decoct in water and take in divided doses. Stop when effective.
