[Collection and Explanation] *Mingyi Bielu* states: Rui He grows in the valleys of Hangu River and Baxi.
Tao Hongjing said: It is now produced in Pengcheng. It is as large as a black soybean, round and flat in shape, with textures, resembling a walnut kernel. Nowadays, people use it with the shell; it should be cracked to take the kernel and weighed.
Su Baosheng said: It is now produced in Yongzhou. It grows on trees, leaves are slender like goji berry but narrower and longer, flowers are white. Fruits grow attached to the stem, purple-red in color, as large as Schisandra chinensis (Wuweizi). Stems have many fine thorns. They ripen in May and June; fruits are collected and sun-dried.
Su Song said: It is also found in Hedong and Bingzhou. The tree is five or seven chi high, stems have thorns.
Kernel
[Processing] [Name missing] said: When using Rui He Kernel, soak in hot water, remove skin and tip, split into two halves. For every four liang of Rui He Kernel, use one liang of Mangxiao (Mirabilite), seven liang of Mutong Cao (Akebia Caulis), boil together for one fu time (approx. 2 hours), take out the kernel and grind into paste for medicinal use.

[Invention/Elucidation] Tao Hongjing said: Medical formulas only use it to treat eye diseases; *Xianjing* uses it to make Shouzhong Wan. Su Song said: According to: Liu Yuxi's *Chuanxin Fang* records a very unique method for treating eyes. It says: For wind-tearing and itching eyes, or formation of nebula (corneal opacity), or redness, all are primarily treated by this. Xuanzhou Huanglian (powder), Rui He Kernel (skin removed, ground into paste) mixed in equal parts. Take two dried jujubes without ash, cut off the top, remove the pit, fill with the two substances, replace the top, wrap in thin cotton. Add half a bowl of water measured by a large tea bowl, decoct in a silver vessel using alternating mild and strong fire until reduced to the size of a chicken egg. Filter through cotton and store in a jar. Instill into eyes; ten thousand times without failure. Tested on dozens of people previously and all responded; current physicians also use it frequently with good effect.
[Attached Formulas] Seven new ones.
