Li Shizhen says: Insects are the smallest creatures, their categories are numerous, hence the character 'Chong' (Insect) is formed by three 'Chong' radicals meeting in meaning. According to Kao Gong Ji: External skeleton, internal skeleton, walking backwards, walking sideways, linked walking, winding walking, vibrating to sound, injecting air to sound, side-sounding, wing-sounding, abdomen-sounding, chest-sounding, are called the category of small insects. Although these creatures are minute and cannot be ranked with Qilin, Fenghuang, Turtle, and Dragon; yet they have forms of feathers, hair, scales, shells, armor, and differences in viviparity, oviparity, wind-generation, and damp-generation. They move and contain spirit, each possessing nature and qi. Recording their merits and clarifying their toxicity, thus the Sages distinguished them. Moreover, Cicadas, Ants, Bees, Butterflies which can be used as food are seen in Li Ji; Centipedes, Silkworms, Toads, Scorpions which can be used in prescriptions are recorded in medical books. Zhou Li has Shu Shi removing toxic gu, Jian Shi removing pests, Guo Qu removing frogs and toads, Chi You Shi removing wall insects (such as Earwigs), Hu Zhuo Shi removing water insects (such as Fox Spirits). Thus, the Sages were meticulous even about trivial matters. Scholars should not fail to investigate the principles of things and observe their benefits and toxins? Therefore, I collected one hundred and thirty-six species of small insects with merit or harm.
Now, separating out the Scale and Shell categories, merging six types, moving eight types into Birds/Beasts and Utensils categories, moving six types from Self-Named Unused, and moving two types from the Wood category.
