[Suan Zao Ren (Ziziphi Spinosae Semen)]
The Qi is neutral. The taste is sour. It is non-toxic. It primarily treats alternating cold and heat in the chest and abdomen, accumulation of pathogenic factors forming masses or qi stagnation, soreness and pain in the four limbs, and damp-bi syndrome (pain and numbness of limbs caused by dampness obstructing the meridians). Long-term consumption stabilizes the five zang organs, lightens the body, and prolongs life. (Stir-fry and grind before use)
Suan Zao Ren has a neutral Qi, inheriting the metal energy of autumnal contraction from heaven, entering the Hand-Taiyin Lung Meridian. Its sour and non-toxic taste derives from the wood flavor of the east, entering the Foot-Jueyin Liver Meridian and the Hand-Jueyin Pericardium Meridian (Wind-Wood). Both its Qi and taste are descending, belonging to Yin. The heart is located in the region of the chest and diaphragm, which is where the Hand-Jueyin Pericardium Meridian originates. The abdomen is the region of Zhongwan, where the Foot-Jueyin Liver Meridian travels. The Pericardium governs heat, while the Liver governs cold. The Jueyin meridian governs dispersion. If dispersion fails, cold-heat pathogens accumulate and qi becomes stagnant. Suan Zao Ren’s sour taste enters the Jueyin meridian; when the Jueyin is harmonized, stagnation dissipates. The four limbs refer to the hands and feet, the pathways of the two Jueyin meridians. Soreness, pain, and damp-bi indicate wind-dampness residing in the Jueyin collaterals. Suan Zao Ren’s sour taste nourishes blood; when blood moves, wind subsides. Its neutral Qi benefits the lungs; when lung qi regulates, dampness moves. Thus, it treats these conditions. The Pericardium is the minister and envoy of the Heart, the meridian that acts on behalf of the Sovereign (Heart). The Liver is the organ of continuous generation and the master of flourishing vitality. Long-term consumption of Suan Zao Ren ensures sufficient Yin of the Jueyin, thereby stabilizing the five zang organs. Its neutral Qi benefits the lungs, thus lightening the body and prolonging life.
Prescription Methods:
Combine Suan Zao Ren with Fushen (Poria with Hostwood), Yuanzhi (Polygalae Radix), Maidong (Ophiopogonis Radix), Shihu (Dendrobii Caulis), Wuweizi (Schisandrae Fructus), Yuanyrou (Longan Aril), and Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) to treat palpitations and fright.
Combine with Dihuang (Rehmanniae Radix), Baishao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), Maidong, Wuweizi, Yuanyrou, and Zhuye (Bambusae Folium) to treat spontaneous sweating.
Combine with Fushen and Renshen to treat night sweating.
Combine with Renshen, Fushen, Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), and Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) to treat tremors, palpitations, and insomnia.
Combine with Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma), Fushen, and Gancao, named Suan Zao Ren Tang (Decoction of Ziziphi Spinosae Seed), to treat deficiency-heat restlessness and insomnia.
[Nv Zhen Zi (Ligustri Lucidi Fructus)]
The Qi is neutral. The taste is bitter. It is non-toxic. It primarily tonifies the middle jiao, stabilizes the five zang organs, nourishes the spirit, and eliminates various diseases. Long-term consumption makes the body robust and healthy, lightens the body, and prevents aging.
Nv Zhen Zi has a neutral Qi, inheriting the metal energy of autumnal harvest from heaven, entering the Hand-Taiyin Lung Meridian. Its bitter and non-toxic taste derives from the fire flavor of the south, entering the Hand-Shaoyin Heart Meridian. Both its Qi and taste are descending, belonging to Yin. The Middle Jiao is the guardian of Yin, and the five zang organs store Yin essence. Nv Zhen Zi’s neutral Qi benefits the lungs; as the Lung is the source of transformation for fluids, it tonifies the middle and stabilizes the viscera. The Heart is the residence of the Spirit, and the Lung is the mother of water. Entering the Heart and Lung meridians to benefit Yin, sufficient Yin leads to abundant Qi, abundant Qi leads to vigorous Spirit and generated Essence, thus primarily nourishing the spirit. When Qi loses its neutrality, disease arises. Nv Zhen Zi’s neutral Qi, combined with the Lung’s governance of Qi, ensures Qi remains balanced, eliminating all diseases. The tangible skin, flesh, sinews, and bones of the human body belong to Yin. Nv Zhen Zi’s neutral and bitter nature benefits Yin, causing muscles to become plump and sinews and bones to become strong. The Heart is the root of life, its brilliance manifesting in the face; the Lung is the source of Qi, sufficient Qi lightens the body, and the brilliance of blood prevents aging.
