[Chelonae Carapax et Plastrum]
Qi is neutral. Flavor is salty. Non-toxic. Primarily treats abdominal masses and growths (Zheng and Jia), hard accumulations with alternating chills and fever, removes痞 (obstructions), polyps, genital ulcers, hemorrhoidal nodes, and malignant flesh. (Processed with vinegar).
Chelonae Carapax et Plastrum has a neutral Qi, inheriting the metal energy of autumnal gathering from heaven, entering the Hand Taiyin Lung Meridian. Its salty flavor and non-toxic nature derive from the water essence of the north on earth, entering the Foot Shaoyin Kidney Meridian.
Both Qi and flavor descend, belonging to Yin. The abdomen and chest are the pathways of the Foot Jueyin Liver Meridian. Accumulations that have form and can be palpated are called Zheng (masses); those formed by external factors are called Jia (growths). Hard accumulations causing chills and fever result from the stagnation and excessive hyperactivity of Jueyin Liver Qi. Chelonae Carapax et Plastrum enters the Lung via its neutral Qi; Lung Qi in balance can control Liver Wood. Its salty flavor softens hardness, thus treating these conditions. Pi (obstruction) is caused by stagnant Liver Qi; the salty and neutral properties control Liver Qi and soften hardness, hence it also treats this. Polyps, genital ulcers, hemorrhoids, and malignant flesh arise either in the nose (the orifice of the Lung) or in the bowels and urethra (the orifices of the Kidney). Entering the Lung and Kidney meridians to soften hardness, it eliminates all malignant flesh.

[Cryptotestudinis Carapax et Plastrum]
Qi is neutral. Flavor is sweet. Toxic. Primarily treats leukorrhea with blood (Lou Xia Chi Bai), breaks up masses and growths, treats malaria, five types of hemorrhoids, genital ulcers, damp-bi syndrome, heaviness and weakness of the four limbs, and unclosed fontanelles in children. Long-term use makes the body light and reduces hunger.
Cryptotestudinis Carapax et Plastrum has a neutral Qi, inheriting the metal energy of autumnal gathering from heaven, entering the Hand Taiyin Lung Meridian. Its sweet flavor derives from the central earth essence on earth, entering the Foot Taiyin Spleen Meridian. It is the deity of the North, the leader of shelled creatures, possessing a complex toxicity and inheriting Yin-cold nature, entering the Foot Shaoyin Kidney Meridian. Its Qi and flavor descend more than they ascend, belonging to Yin. The Spleen governs blood; if Spleen blood fails to govern, leukorrhea with blood occurs. Cryptotestudinis Carapax et Plastrum treats this because its sweet flavor tonifies the Spleen. When malaria progresses to form masses and growths, damp-heat pathogens have firmly consolidated in the Yin aspect. Cryptotestudinis Carapax et Plastrum clears heat via its Yin-cold nature and promotes diuresis via its neutral Qi, thus treating this condition. Fire consolidating in the Large Intestine generates five types of hemorrhoids; turbid dampness pouring downward causes genital ulcers. The Lung connects with the Large Intestine, and the Kidney governs the yin organs. Its cold nature removes heat, and its neutral Qi dissipates dampness, thus treating these conditions. The Spleen governs the four limbs; excess dampness causes heaviness and weakness. Cryptotestudinis Carapax et Plastrum tonifies the Spleen via its sweet flavor and dispels dampness via its neutral nature; when dampness moves, the four limbs become strong. The Kidney governs bones; Kidney deficiency in children leads to unclosed fontanelles. Cryptotestudinis Carapax et Plastrum treats this by tonifying Kidney Yin. Long-term use benefits the Kidney. The Kidney is the gate of the Stomach; when the gate is open, it removes Spleen dampness, resulting in a light body and reduced hunger.

Combined with Fa Hui (burned hair/scalp ash), Chuanxiong Rhizoma (Chuanxiong), and Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Guishen) treats difficult labor and unclosed pubic symphysis in short-statured women.
