[Bai Zhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix)]
Pungent in flavor, warm in nature, non-toxic. It primarily treats leukorrhea with red and white discharge in women, amenorrhea, vulvar swelling, alternating chills and fever, wind pathogen invading the head causing tearing, promotes skin growth and lubrication, and can be used to make facial cosmetic paste. It treats prolonged thirst due to wind pathogen, vomiting, fullness in the two hypochondria, wind-induced pain, dizziness, itchy eyes; it can be made into ointments or facial cosmetics to moisturize the complexion. Also known as Fangxiang, also known as Bai Chang (Bai ), also known as Guan, also known as Fulí, also known as Zefen. Its leaves are named Ma (leaf name), which can be used to make bathing decoctions. It grows in low-lying valleys of Hedong. The roots are harvested in February and August and dried in the sun. (Danggui acts as its guide drug; it is incompatible with Xuanfuhua.)
Currently produced near roadsides, found everywhere, especially abundant in eastern regions near wetlands. The leaves can also be used to make bathing decoctions; Daoists use this fragrant herb for bathing to expel corpse worms, and also use it to compound...
[Xi Xin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma)]
Pungent in flavor, warm in nature, non-toxic. It primarily treats cough and rebellious qi caused by wind-cold, and imparts fragrance to clothes and body. It grows in valleys. The roots are harvested on the third day of the third lunar month, thoroughly washed, and dried in the sun.
The roots and leaves resemble Xi Xin (note: text implies resemblance to another herb, likely a transcription error in source or referring to similar appearance, but literally says "resemble Xi Xin"), differing only slightly in odor. It is found everywhere. It is rarely used in medical prescriptions; only Daoists consume it to impart fragrance to the body and clothing. *Shan Hai Jing*...
[Du Ruo (Polliae Radix)]
Pungent in flavor, slightly warm in nature, non-toxic. It primarily treats rebellious qi in the lower chest and hypochondrium, warms the middle jiao, wind pathogen invading the Naohu acupoint causing headache and swelling, excessive tearing and rhinorrhea, dizziness and falling, eye discomfort, relieves pain, and eliminates bad breath. Long-term consumption benefits essence, brightens the eyes, lightens the body, and improves memory. Also known as Du Heng, also known as Du Lian, also known as Bai Lian, also known as Bai Qin, also known as Ruo Zhi. It grows in the marshes of Wuling and Wanqu. The roots are harvested in February and August and dried in the sun. (It works well when combined with Xin Yi and Xi Xin; it is incompatible with Chaihu and Qianhu.)
It is now found everywhere. The leaves resemble ginger but have visible veins; the root resembles Gao Liang Jiang (Galangal) but is thinner, with a pungent and fragrant taste. It closely resembles the root of Xuanfu (Inulae Radix), almost causing confusion, differing only slightly in leaf shape. The *Chu Ci* states: "The person in the mountains is fragrant like Du Ruo." This Du Ruo is also known as Du Heng, but there is currently another plant called Du Heng that does not resemble this one. (*Da Guan Ben Cao*) Volume...
[Bai Mu (Cupressi Ramulus/Fructus or related species)]
Bitter in flavor, cold in nature, non-toxic. It primarily treats stagnant qi and heat in the five zang organs and intestines/stomach, jaundice, intestinal hemorrhoids, stops diarrhea and dysentery, treats leukorrhea with red and white discharge in women, and erosive sores of the yin and yang orifices. It treats fright qi lodged between the skin layers, causing hot, red, raised skin lesions, hot red painful eyes, and mouth ulcers. Long-term consumption enhances spiritual clarity. Also known as Tan Huan. The root, named Tan Huan, primarily treats various diseases of the heart and abdomen, calms the soul and spirit, and alleviates hunger and thirst. Long-term consumption lightens the body, extends life, and enhances spiritual clarity. It grows in the valleys of Hanzhong and Yongchang. (It is incompatible with Ganqi.)
Those produced in Shaoling are superior if they are thin and dark-colored. Those produced in Dongshan are thick and light-colored. Its root is classified under the category of Wood Mushrooms (Mu Zhi) in Daoist texts, but modern people do not know to harvest and consume it. There is also a small tree resembling a pomegranate. Its bark is yellow and bitter, commonly called Zi Bai in the world, and also treats mouth ulcers. Another type of small tree has many thorns and yellow bark, which also treats mouth ulcers.
