[Realgar]
Pungent in flavor, neutral in nature, toxic. Primarily treats the harmonization of the five Zang organs (Five Zang organs: Heart, Liver, Spleen, Lung, Kidney), stabilizes the mind and spirit (Shen), stops palpitations and fright, expels evil pathogens (Xie Qi). Long-term consumption makes the body light and prolongs life. Originates from Yongchang. Harvested at any time.
The origin of silver is also the same as that of gold, but both are produced within stones. The methods for refining and ingesting them are also similar. In current medical prescriptions, it is used to compound Zhenxin Wan (Calming the Heart Pill), but it cannot be taken directly. To make silver powder, it should be ground with mercury until dissolved. Yongchang originally belonged to Yizhou. It now belongs to Ningzhou, which is extremely remote and no longer submits tribute. "Xian Jing" (Scriptures of Immortals) also contains records of ingestion and refining methods; however, since it lacks primary clinical indications, it was not included in "Ben Cao" (Materia Medica). In ancient times, gold was called Huangjin (Yellow Metal), silver was called Baijin (White Metal), and copper was called Chijin (Red Metal). Currently, there is a distinction between raw and refined copper; refined copper is soft and red, but it is not used in "Ben Cao". Currently, Tongqing (Copper Green/Verdigris) and large coins are used in prescriptions; these are all raw copper and should be classified under the Lower Grade (Xia Pin).
[Crealgar]
Bitter and sweet in flavor, neutral in nature, or described as cold and greatly warm, toxic. Primarily treats alternating chills and fever, Shuluo (scrofula/lump in the neck), malignant sores, Ju (carbuncle), hemorrhoids, and necrotic tissue. Treats skin diseases caused by scabies mites, ulcers, eye pain, nasal polyps, tendon rupture, bone fracture, severe wind pathogens in joints, accumulations and masses, Pi Qi (abdominal lumps), sudden invasion of evil pathogens, abdominal pain, Gu Zhu (a contagious disease attributed to ghosts), kills spirits and evil entities, expels wicked ghosts and evil pathogens, resists poisoning from hundred insects, swelling and toxicity, withstands weapon injuries, kills various snake and viper toxins, resolves Lulu (Veratrum) toxicity, and enhances facial luster and radiance. After refining and ingestion, it makes the body light and leads to immortality. When ingested, its essence flies into the human brain, surpassing ghosts and deities, prolonging life and longevity, maintaining internal fullness without hunger. Combined with copper, it can transform into gold. Also known as Huangshi. Methods for refining and ingesting Realgar are found in "Xian Jing"; the method of transforming copper into gold is found in "Huangbai Shu" (Art of Yellow and White Metals). Since the late Jin Dynasty, disturbances among the Di and Qiang tribes have occurred, causing this material to cease circulation entirely. Occasionally, only three or five taels appear in the market, priced like gold. Pills are compounded using high-quality Shi Huang (Stone Yellow) from Shimen and Shixing. Initially, during the early Qi dynasty, small amounts were obtained through trade at Liangzhou. Upon arriving in the capital, I first saw it at the residence of Chen Dianqian, an envoy's clerk. Upon inspection, I found over ten pieces. These people did not recognize what the substance was; seeing yellow realgar nearby, some claimed it was Cinnabar (Dansha). I informed them and instructed them to seek more. Gradually, supplies arrived. High-quality specimens resemble the color of a rooster's comb, are odorless, and solid. Those that are dark black and soft are inferior. Wudu and the Di tribe region are the location of Qiuchi. Dangchang also produces it, identical to Qiuchi but slightly inferior. Dunhuang is thousands of li west of Liangzhou; I have never obtained specimens from there. People in Jiangdong do not know about it, so what can be said? This medicine is most essential and penetrates everywhere. (From "Xinxiu Bencao" Vol. 41, page 4; "Daguan Bencao" Vol. 4; "Zhenghe Bencao" page 101)
