Taste is sweet, nature is neutral. It belongs to Metal and is Yang in nature. It is non-toxic. It originates from the transformation of pine resin and takes a thousand years in the soil to form. Initially it resembles peach gum, but gradually becomes hard over time. It is widely produced in Western regions, with a pale color, clear transparency, and luster. It also grows in Nanjun, with a deep color, heavy texture, and turbidity. (For inlaying jewelry, clear transparency and luster are considered rare; for medicinal use, heavy texture and turbidity are disregarded.) When rubbed by hand, heat generated allows it to pick up straw and grass; when boiled in water, it softens like maltose syrup. It sticks to objects upon contact, which is its excellent quality. Currently, many market vendors create fake products by boiling eggs and using the stones from green fish heads, so one must examine them carefully. For medicinal use, it is ground into powder and taken with warm water. It promotes urination, treats the five types of strangury (five forms of painful urinary disorders), stabilizes the soul and spirit, and calms the five Zang organs. It breaks up masses and stasis, eliminates evil spirits and pathogenic factors. It stops bleeding, generates flesh, brightens the eyes, and removes corneal opacities. It treats postpartum blood dizziness and "child pillow" pain, heals chronic ulcers from metal wounds, and alleviates epigastric pain. Another variety has a different name but same origin. Its shape resembles dark jade but is lighter, and its substance also derives from pine resin. It takes two thousand years to take shape. It is particularly good for calming the mind, nourishing the heart, generating flesh, and breaking blood stasis. It cannot be used to make vessels, as it cracks when exposed to wind. Children wearing it is said to ward off evil.
(Mo) notes: Danxi stated that ancient formulas used Hu Po (Amber) to promote urination because it benefits the Spleen Earth by drying dampness. Since the Spleen can transform and transport, and the Lung Qi descends, urination can thus be unblocked. However, if used for patients with blood deficiency and difficulty in urination, it may instead cause dryness and urgency, so caution is required. The book *Bie Shuo* also states that Fu Ling (Poria) and Hu Po (Amber) both originate from pine trees but have different endowments. Fu Ling is entirely Yin in its generation and formation, while Hu Po is born in Yang and formed in Yin. Therefore, both treat the Ying (Nutrient) level, calm the mind, and promote urination, with similar effects.
Taste is pungent. It is non-toxic. Select ink made from pine soot, grind it into medicated preparations for treatment. Only fine smoke is effective; coarse smoke is ineffective. Those faked with tung oil smoke, petroleum smoke, or millet straw ash cannot be used to treat diseases. It stops bleeding effectively because black overcomes red. Thus, for epidemic heat toxins causing nasal bleeding or lower body hemorrhage of several sheng (units of volume), grind it in water and drip it in. For postpartum blood dizziness or metrorrhagia with sudden profuse bleeding, grind it in vinegar and take it orally. For filaments entangling the eyes, grind it with chicken blood and apply quickly. For abdominal invasion by alien qi, grind it in earth slurry and swallow immediately. It expels dead fetus and afterbirth, and unites metal wounds to generate skin and flesh.
