Similar to *Hibiscus mutabilis* (Mu Jin, 木槿), the flowers are pale red, with five leaves forming one flower; they open in the morning and close at dusk. Both the flowers and branches are used medicinally. In Hunan and north of the Yangtze River, households often plant it as a hedge. Other properties are as recorded in medical classics.
Currently, people turn palm fiber into vessels. When burned to black ash, it treats women's metrorrhagia (abnormal uterine bleeding) and hematemesis (vomiting blood), often combined with other herbs. The palm fiber is harvested annually; otherwise, binding it would kill the tree. The flowers resemble fish roe, are boiled thoroughly, and pickled as fruit preserves.
*Torreya grandis* wood (Zhe Mu, 柘木) has internal grain patterns and can also be turned into vessels. Its leaves feed silkworms, known as Zhe silkworms. Feeding silkworms with Zhe leaves is inferior to using mulberry leaves. Decocting the juice from the eastward-growing roots and bark of Zhe wood for brewing wine has been verified effective for treating wind-deficiency deafness. Other properties are as recorded in medical classics.
Scattered hair and human hair are two distinct entities. Human hair tastes bitter and refers to hair that has aged over years. Just as all orange peels are orange peels, but the aged ones are preferred. Herbs such as *Stellera chamaejasme* (Ye Lang Du, 野狼毒), *Ephedrae Herba* (Mahuang, 麻黄), *Evodiae Fructus* (Wuzhuyu, 吴茱萸), *Pinelliae Rhizoma* (Banxia, 半夏), and *Aurantii Fructus Immaturus* (Zhishi, 枳实) must all be aged, known as the "Six Aged Herbs" (Liu Chen, 六陈), which are superior for medicinal use. Bai Pu (Decayed Cattail Catkins, 败蒲) is similar; this utilizes the principle of aging. Nowadays, people also refer to processed human hair as Xue Yu (Blood Remainder, 血余). There is no medicinal meaning of "Xue Yu" in raw scattered hair strips. These two meanings are clear, and there is no need for excessive searching or speculation. Take a piece of scattered hair the size of a chicken egg, roast it until charred black in an oil-free vessel, grind it into powder, pour one cup of good wine over it, add two qian of *Polygoni Multiflori Preparata* (Heshouwu, 何首乌) powder, stir evenly, and administer when warm. After swallowing, wait one or two ke (approx. 30-60 minutes), then administer again. This is extremely effective for treating tetanus (Po Shang Feng, 破伤风) and stroke induced by washing hair.
Human milk has many benefits for treating eye diseases. Why? The heart generates blood, and the liver stores blood; when the liver receives blood, vision is possible. Essentially, water enters the meridians, and blood is formed. It is said: upward it becomes milk, downward it becomes menstruation. Thus, we know milk is blood. Using it to apply to the eyes cannot be inappropriate. Blood is yin, so its nature is cold. People with internal cold should not consume too much dairy products like milk cakes or cheese. Although referring to cow and sheep milk, it still falls within the creation of yin and yang. Western regions further make butter and cheese from camel and horse milk. For elderly patients suffering from mouth ulcers who cannot eat, drinking warm human milk is beneficial.
Grind dry, aged hair into powder. Dig a small pit of five to six cun deep in clean yellow earth in a shady place. Place three spoonfuls of the powder into the pit, mix evenly with fresh well water. Wait for it to clarify. Administer to those suffering from epidemic high fever, delirium, and extreme thirst requiring water; it will cure them. Secularly, this is called Di Qing (Earth Clear Water, 地清). However, do not drink it excessively, likely due to concerns about overdosing. It also treats all types of carbuncles, furuncles, heat-toxema swelling where pus and blood have not yet ruptured, and unbearable pain. Use half a qian each of dry powder and *Moschus* (Shexiang, 麝香), grind finely together. Take a dose the size of a bean, apply to the center of the sore with saliva, secure with a vinegar-flour paste shaped like a coin, allow pus to drain, then remove the medicine.
