Sugarcane: Sweet, neutral, and astringent in taste. Thin in qi and rich in flavor. It is Yin within Yang and has a descending nature. It enters the Foot Taiyin Spleen Meridian, Foot Yangming Stomach Meridian, and Hand Taiyin Lung Meridian. It treats assisting Spleen Qi, benefiting the Large Intestine, relieving thirst, and treating vomiting and hiccups. It broadens the chest and diaphragm. Sugarcane is the fruit of the Spleen. Its juice is sweet and cold, capable of draining fire and heat. When boiled down into sugar, it becomes sweet and warm, thereby aiding damp-heat (Binhu). Danyang often uses it to assist Spleen Qi, harmonize the middle, resolve alcohol toxicity, relieve thirst, benefit the Small and Large Intestines, and tonify Qi. Placed in a cellar manure pit in the twelfth lunar month, its juice is effective for patients suffering from epidemic febrile diseases with mania (Jiamo). It is most suitable for children to eat, as it can regulate roundworms; eating it in moderation will not induce deficiency heat or cause nasal bleeding. As Wu Rui stated... (Text missing here)
Mulong (Related to Prunus japonica / Wild Grape Vine): Also known as wild grape vine. The single name "Mulong" refers to the fruit, which is Prunus japonica (Yuli). The double name refers to the vine. The vines, leaves, flowers, and fruits resemble those of grapes... (The original text contains scattered characters like Jujube, Youfeng, indicating layout errors or citations of other entries; translating visible parts based on context).
Lotus Root: Its root is the lotus root (Ou), its fruit is the lotus seed (Lian), and its stems and leaves are lotus leaves (He). Using lotus seeds as seedlings results in slow growth, while using lotus root buds leads to easy sprouting. The roots grow horizontally; newly born ones are called "Mi", and those formed into nodes are called "Ou". Ou is the general term. Each node divides into two stems: one grows vertically upwards to become leaves, and the other grows horizontally to become baby lotus roots. Lotus roots do not grow without pairing; this applies to every node. The main root is called "Feng", the stem "Qu", the leaf "Qie", and He is also a general term. The flower bud before opening is called "Handan", and when fully open, "Furong" (Note: Original text omits specific terms, translating visible words strictly). The shell is called "Fang", the fruit "Lianzi", and the heart "Yi". Lian is also a general term. The seeds inside the receptacle grow from bottom to top. The Yi is greenish-blue, containing two curled lotus leaf branches that fold upwards, holding the flower bud inside. Generated from top to bottom, the red skin turns black after autumn, sinks in water, but floats when boiled with brine. Those growing in mountains and seas can last for a hundred years without decay. Eating them makes hair... (Zhiyi)
Lotus Seed: Sweet and astringent in taste. Neutral in qi. Enters the Foot Taiyin and Yangming meridians, and additionally the Hand and Foot Shaoyin meridians. Stone lotus seeds and regular lotus seeds are both warm in nature. (Rihua) Young lotus seeds... (Text missing here) White turbidity... Efficacy... Contains in lotus... Thus Buddhist... Taste Yam, Cornus, Ginseng, Nutmeg, boil in water, take out and dry... Stone lotus seed. After frost in the ninth lunar month, harvest those hard and black like stone, obtained by breaking the receptacle. Those that sink into mud in water are good. What is sold in markets now is a type shaped like Torreya nucifera, extremely bitter in taste, produced on trees in Guangzhong, a woody fruit, unsuitable for medicinal use. This substance turns black in autumn, sinks in water, but floats when boiled with brine. It gathers the spiritual energy of Tianyi (Number One of Heaven) to manifest the virtue of Di'er (Number Two of Earth), revealing its natural color as the mother of Autumn Metal. Entering water, it rises with fire, yet its pulse belongs entirely to Water nature, hiding densely without floating properties. Only through the softening action of brine (its own kind) and the forcing power of boiling does the vital qi flow naturally, preventing it from sinking. (Zhiyi) Attached Formula: For clearing heart and calming spirit. Use dried flesh of stone lotus seeds from the lotus receptacle, rub off the red skin in a mortar, keep the lotus heart, grind into powder, add Borneol, and take with tea. White... Powder, each dose...
Lotus Plumule (i.e., Yi in the lotus seed): Bitter in taste, cold in qi. Treats clearing the Heart and draining heat. The Bureau Formula uses soaking in water until cracked, taking the fresh heart to treat Heart heat, and subsequent thirst, summerheat cholera. Zangqi stated that eating lotus seeds without removing the heart causes vomiting. Regarding treating Heart and Kidney diseases, when used with other herbs to benefit the Spleen, removing the heart is acceptable. Attached Formula: For hematemesis due to mental overwork, use seven lotus plumules and twenty-one glutinous rice grains, grind into powder, take with wine. For nocturnal emission and spermatorrhea, use a pinch of lotus plumules, grind into powder, add one fen of Cinnabar, take one qian per dose with white decoction, twice daily.
Lotus Stamen: Sweet and astringent in taste, warm in qi. A herb for the Foot Shaoyin Kidney Meridian, also communicating with the Hand Shaoyin Pericardium/Lung Meridian. Treats calming the Heart, consolidating essence, tonifying Qi, clearing the Heart... treating slippery discharge, darkening beard and hair. Made into pills with Phellodendron, Amomum, Astragalus complanatus (Shayuan), Fish Maw, Raspberry, Schisandra, Oyster Shell, and Licorice, it is best for treating dream emission and seminal leakage. Note... Lotus, its lower side produces lotus roots horizontally, its leaf stems are green, hollow, and upward-facing, resembling the structure of the Zhen Trigram. The lotus emerging from water has side stems producing... Erupting in late summer, two stems stand straight together, gathering the spiritual energy of Tianyi and penetrating the virtue of Di'er. The yellow stamens inside have earthy colors, implying Water relies on Wood qi... to Fire, originally cannot be separated from Earth. By late summer, the virtue of Fire is revealed, and the form adorns Earth. Water and Fire adorn themselves in Earth, truly... Calming the Heart, consolidating essence, and tonifying Qi. Thus ancient formulas for solidifying truth and tonification often use it. Meaning detailed in General Discussion.
Lotus Root: White-flowered lotus roots with large, flat pores taste sweet when raw but are unpalatable when cooked. Red-flowered and wild lotus roots taste astringent when raw but are excellent when boiled or steamed. Sweet in taste, neutral in qi, entering the Heart, Spleen, and Stomach meridians. Raw ones are sweet and cold, cooked ones are sweet and warm. Avoid iron vessels. Raw consumption clears heat in the chest, disperses retained blood, relieves irritability and thirst; crushed juice treats irritability, clears the Stomach, treats post-cholera deficiency thirst, and postpartum blood stagnation. Steamed consumption aids digestion, stops diarrhea, opens the appetite, broadens the middle, tonifies the five Zang organs, and strengthens the Lower Jiao. Honeyed consumption makes the abdominal viscera fat and prevents worms. Postpartum patients should avoid raw and cold foods, except lotus root, as it breaks blood stasis. (Shen) Lotus root grows in low, dirty places yet remains pure and white; its texture is soft yet penetrates hardness; dwelling below, it has nodes, with exquisite holes and hidden silk-like threads. From tender shoots, it develops into stems, leaves, flowers, and fruits, then regenerates buds to continue the pulse of life. Edible in all four seasons, bringing joy to the heart, it can be called a spiritual root. Therefore, its indications mainly concern disorders of the Blood aspect of the Heart and Spleen, differing slightly from the efficacy of lotus seeds. For seasonal fever with irritability and thirst, mix one cup of lotus root juice with half a he of raw honey, drink finely. For cholera with irritability and thirst, mix one zhong of lotus root juice with half a zhong of ginger juice, drink mixed. For upper Jiao phlegm-heat, mix half a cup of lotus root juice with half a cup of pear juice, take mixed. For postpartum confusion and rushing of Blood Qi, dry mouth, and abdominal pain, equal parts of lotus root juice, Rehmannia juice, and child's urine, decoct and take. For hot strangury, equal parts of lotus root juice, Rehmannia juice, and grape juice, take half a cup per dose with honey, warmed.
Lotus Node: Astringent in taste, neutral in qi, cold in nature. Counteracts sulfur. Crushed juice drunk dissipates blood stasis, resolves heat toxins, stops hematemesis and epistaxis, and treats hematuria, lower bleeding, metrorrhagia, and painful swelling from blood strangury. Mix lotus root juice with ash of hair, take two qian per dose; after three days, bleeding stops and pain ceases. Cold dysentery caused by eating lake crabs: crush new [lotus root/node], mix with hot wine, take several doses for cure. Generally, lotus root dissipates blood stasis, resolves heat, opens the appetite, and resolves crab toxicity. Sudden hematemesis... He San. Use seven lotus nodes and seven lotus stalk bases, add a little honey, pound into paste, add two zhongs of water, decoct to eight-tenths, remove dregs, take warm. Or grind into powder. For blood in stool, sun-dry lotus nodes, grind into powder, decoct with Ginseng and white honey, take two qian per dose, twice daily. Jin Suo Yu Guan (Yu Suo Dan) treats seminal emission and white turbidity, Heart deficiency with restlessness. Use two liang each of lotus nodes, lotus stamens, lotus seeds and hearts, Gorgon fruit, Chinese yam, Poria, and Poria with wood. Grind into powder. Crush two jin of Rosa laevigata (Jinyingzi), decoct in ten dou of water to eight-tenths, remove dregs, reduce to paste, mix with a little flour to make pills the size of wu zi. Take seventy pills per dose with millet drink. Using lotus nodes for this condition shows that the node's function is not primarily breaking blood. Also, raw lotus root resolves heat and treats irritability/thirst, specifically white-flowered ones imbued with Metal qi. Cooked lotus root opens appetite, stops diarrhea, tonifies five Zang, and strengthens Lower Jiao, specifically red-flowered ones imbued with Fire qi. In summary, it treats Heart-Spleen Blood disorders. Lotus nodes are superior for treating upper and lower hemorrhage. The Classic states: Blood is the spirit and qi; nodes are where spirit and qi travel and exit/enter, not skin, flesh, sinew, or bone. From this, one can understand the meaning of lotus nodes treating blood. Detailed later in General Discussion.
Lotus Leaf: Primarily generates and nourishes Yuan Qi, assists the Spleen and Stomach, dissipates blood stasis, reduces edema, promotes eruption of smallpox, treats hematemesis, expectoration of blood, epistaxis, lower bleeding, urinary bleeding, and metrorrhagia. Postpartum evil blood damage and敗血 causing emaciation: single administration can resolve Qi of Yang-water edema. For Yang-water edema, burn rotten lotus leaves to retain their nature, grind into powder, take two qian per dose with millet drink, three times daily. Postpartum heart pain due to incomplete expulsion of evil blood: fry lotus leaves until fragrant, grind into powder, take one fang cun bi per dose with boiling water or child's urine. Burning to ash or decocting is also fine. For hematemesis and expectorated blood, one liang each of rotten lotus leaf and Polygonatum (Puhuang - *Note: Puhuang is Pollen Typhae, likely typo in source or context implies Cattail pollen*), grind into powder, take two qian per dose with Ophiopogon decoction. For metrorrhagia and lower bleeding, roast and grind half liang of lotus leaf, one liang each of Puhuang and Scutellaria, grind into powder, take three qian per dose on an empty stomach with wine. For Leitou Tou Feng (Thunder Head Wind) facial swelling and pain, aversion to cold, fever, resembling Taiyang disease, affecting the Three Yang meridians, do not overuse heavy cold medicines to punish the innocent; Qingzhen Tang is primary. Use one lotus leaf, five qian of Cimicifuga, five qian of Atractylodes, decoct in water and take warm. For smallpox that has erupted but is re-exposed to wind-cold, causing closed orifices and congealed blood, leading to non-progression or blackening of spots (Dao Ye), accompanied by body pain and slight coldness of limbs: only warm muscles and disperse pathogens so heat qi flows again and spots emerge; Zi Bei He Ye San is suitable, as lotus leaf can raise Yang Qi, dissipate blood stasis, preserve good blood, and Silkworm Cocoon (Jiangcan) resolves stagnant Qi. (Wenren Gui) Jiegu's Zhizhu Wan uses lotus leaves roasted with rice to make pills. Why? The Foot Shaoyang Gallbladder Meridian belongs to Wind-Wood, being the root of germinating all things. When food enters the Stomach, Ying Qi moves upward, which is the Qi of the Shaoyang Gallbladder Meridian, along with Sanjiao Yuan Qi, both being generating Qi. Lotus leaves rise from under water and soil, clear from filth, are green in color, upward-facing in shape, and hollow inside, resembling the Zhen Trigram. Food and medicine sensing this transformational Qi, how could Stomach Qi not ascend? Furthermore, mixing with roasted rice and herbs cooperates with Atractylodes to nourish and thicken the Stomach Qi, preventing internal injury, greatly beneficial. (Dongyuan) Note: Lotus root can smooth the generative transformation of the Earthly Dao, while lotus leaves can achieve the developmental merit of the Heavenly Dao. Meaning detailed in General Discussion.
Lotus Peduncle Base (Also called Lotus Nose): Bitter and neutral in taste and qi. Primarily calms the fetus, removes evil blood, preserves good blood, and stops bloody dysentery. (Boil in water and take)
[General Discussion] Yin and Yang manifest in odd and even numbers; odd and even are the middle lines of Kan and Li. The flower and root of the lotus do not grow without pairing; this applies to every node. From the nodes, three stems divide and grow upwards; this is odd within even. The Kan Water of Tianyi (1) ascends to intersect with Li, applying its odd utility upwards. Its fruit is the lotus seed; the Yi within the kernel still possesses two curled lotus leaf branches that fold upwards, containing the flower bud inside, generated from top to bottom; this is even within odd. The Li Fire of Di'er (2) descends to intersect with Kan, applying its even utility downwards. Its generation has even at the bottom and odd at the top, embodying the meaning of Ji Ji (After Completion). Moreover, if Li is below, the Kan within Li must reach above; if Kan is above, the Li within Kan must reach below. This is why lotus seeds can interact between Heart and Kidney, calming the ministerial and sovereign fire evils above and below. The Ben Jing first mentions tonifying the Middle because Earth and Water combine their virtues to establish the Earth, and the Qi of Tianyi is True Yang. There is wood emerging from the earth, acting as Shao Yang within Yin, guiding Yang to ascend, causing Yin to follow, thus forming the ascending Earthly Dao. (Kidney meridian reaches Lung and descends into Chest; Spleen meridian reaches Lung and pours into Heart.) There is also Metal in Heaven, acting as Shao Yin within Yang, guiding Yin to descend, causing Yang to follow, thus forming the descending Heavenly Dao. The intersection of Water and Fire adorns the Central Earth; when Water Qi reaches, Earth Qi also reaches; when Fire Qi flows freely, Earth Qi also flows freely. This is the utmost in tonifying the Middle. (The intersection of Water and Fire adorns the Central Earth, and Earth uses Wood as its function. The Classic says: Shaoyang is the pivot; also: One Yin is the sole messenger. Only the lotus leaf's raising of clear Yang and reaching the Stomach Qi resembles this.) It gathers the spiritual energy of Tianyi to penetrate the virtue of Di'er. Within one flower and fruit, there is ultimately the Fire within Water ascending, and initially the Water within Fire descending. (That is, the lotus draws stems from the root, flowers, and bears fruit, all from bottom to top, while the Yi in the seed contains roots, stems, leaves, and flowers, hanging upside down, having the meaning of returning to the root and restoring life.) Then, lotus seeds can almost interact between Water and Fire to benefit Earth, and further benefit Earth to circulate Water and Fire... (Thinking and... Descending to Fire.) Like lotus...
