Dried ones are called Bai Xiang (White Preserved Fish). They originate from the seas in the southeast. Their shape resembles that of a white fish. They have fine scales and a yellow color like gold. Their bodies are flat with weak bones. The head contains a white stone, clean as jade. By autumn, they transform into Guan Fu (wild ducks with crests) (i.e., wild ducks possessing a comb-like crest).
The flavor is sweet and the nature is neutral. When made into soup with vegetables, it opens the appetite and benefits Qi.
Bai Xiang (White Preserved Fish)
Main indications: Roasted consumption eliminates retained food. It treats acute dysentery and sudden abdominal distension with indigestion. In cases of dysentery, greasy and raw/cold foods are strictly contraindicated; only Bai Xiang is suitable for consumption. This is likely because it comes from saltwater but has a non-heat nature, lacks fat, and is not cloying, thus avoiding the risk of internal heat, while promoting digestion and regulating the intestines and stomach. (Li Shizhen) Dried preserved fish has a dispersing and draining nature, entering the intestines and stomach to broaden the middle, digest food, and stop dysentery. (Chen Shigong)
The stones in the head (Shishou Yu Nao Shi / Stonefish Brain Stones) treat lower jiao stone lin (urinary calculi).
Attached Formula: For treating various stone lin and other types of lin syndrome. Take fourteen stones from the heads of Stonefish (Sciaenidae), equal parts of Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), grind into powder. Add two sheng of water, boil down to one sheng, take in one dose for immediate cure.
Fish Swimbladder Glue (Yubiao Jiao): The swimbladder refers to the white bladder of river fish. It is hollow like a bubble and can be processed into glue. It is also named Biao Jiao. Swimbladders from various fish can be made into glue, but those from sea fish are mostly made from the swimbladder of the Stonefish, named Jiang Biao, referring to the swimbladder of river fish. It adheres to objects very firmly.
The taste is salty and sweet. The nature is neutral. Processed by burning to retain its properties (Shao Cun Xing), it treats difficult labor in women, red and white leukorrhea with metrorrhagia, postpartum wind convulsions, tetanus, stops hematemesis, and dissipates blood stasis.

[Discussion] Fish Swimbladder Glue taken together with Sha Yuan Ji Li (Astragali Complanati Semen) aids conception. This is likely due to its property of condensing essence and blood, preventing leakage. It can treat difficult labor and dissipate blood stasis and eliminate [text cuts off].
Grows in mud burrows along the water shore. It has a yellow body with black markings. Its body produces much mucus. Large individuals are two to three chi long. They emerge in summer and hibernate in winter. One theory suggests they are transformed snakes.
Those with white spots, when placed in a water vat among a group of eels, float on the surface entirely. They are toxic and harmful to humans and must be removed. Black ones are also toxic. (Sun Simiao)
The taste is sweet. The nature is greatly warm. It tonifies the middle and benefits blood. It treats deficiency and damage. For women after childbirth, it treats lingering lochia, irregular blood and qi leading to emaciation. It can stop bleeding and is good at tonifying Qi.
It treats facial paralysis (Kou Yan Pian Xie). Mix with a small amount of She Xiang (Musk). Apply to the right side if the face deviates to the left, and to the left side if it deviates to the right. Wash off once corrected. Treats ear pain; drip a few drops into the ear. Treats epistaxis; drip a few drops into the nose. Treats corneal opacity after rash; instill a small amount into the eye. Treats red eyes (Chi Ci); apply frequently with garlic juice and ink. Also applies to Chi You Feng (erysipelas). Eating it with [text cuts off] benefits Qi and strength. For chronic dysentery with weak Qi and slippery intestines, take an unspecified amount of Eel. On the Dragon Boat Festival (Duanwu), remove the guts and viscera, wash clean, and dry in the sun for later use. When using, cut finely, roast in a clay pot until scorched (4 liang), mix with Zhen Shen Qu (Medicated Leaven) lightly roasted (4 liang), grind into powder. Form pills with rice vinegar. Take 60-70 pills each time with aged wine.
This creature is born from the Yang Qi of the earth. Being sweet and warm, it possesses sufficient qualities to tonify Qi. (Chen Shigong) It has no feet and crawls, sharing the same nature as snakes; thus, it can travel through the meridians. It treats the twelve Wind pathogens and diseases of the orifices such as the mouth, eyes, ears, and nose. (Li Shizhen) When Wind pathogen invades the blood vessels, it causes facial paralysis; using Eel Blood to treat it follows the principle of similarity. (Also)
[Discussion] After removing the guts and viscera of the Eel, even if left for several days in the hot summer months, it does not produce a foul odor nor breed maggots. It truly obtains the concentrated and pure Earth Qi. Therefore... [text cuts off]
For insects entering the ear, burn and grind into powder, wrap in cotton, and insert into the ear. The insects will come out immediately.
Mu Shi said: Eel is hot in nature and tonifying. For conditions belonging to deficiency-heat, it should not be consumed. Consuming it after an epidemic disease often leads to relapse. Overconsumption moves Wind Qi and additionally causes... [text cuts off]
