Pig Stomach (Zhu Du)
Taste: Sweet. Nature: Slightly Warm. Actions: Tonifies the middle and supplements qi, relieves thirst, stops acute dysentery and debility. Preparation: Stuff with yellow glutinous rice, steam, pound into pills. Indications: Consumptive qi deficiency, pediatric malnutrition with roundworms, jaundice, and emaciation. Theory: Pigs are water-storing animals, while the stomach belongs to Earth; thus, it is a key item for tonifying the spleen and stomach.
Attached Formula: For tonifying deficiency and emaciation, use one pig stomach. Insert five liang of Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix), one liang of Shu Jiao (Sichuan Pepper Pericarpium), one and a half liang of Gan Jiang (Dried Ginger), seven scallion whites, and half sheng of Jing Mi (Rice Grain). Sew tightly and boil until cooked. Eat.
For persistent watery diarrhea, use one pig (castrated) stomach. Boil with garlic until soft, pound into a paste, and form pills the size of wu zi (Cocculus orbiculatus seeds). Take thirty pills with rice water. Or, if there is one episode of watery diarrhea at dawn daily and hundred medicines fail, add three liang of Ping Wei San powder to the pills and take together.
Pig Spleen (Zhu Pi)
Common name: Lian Tie.
Taste: Astringent. Nature: Neutral. Indications: Deficiency-heat of the spleen and stomach. Preparation: Cook with aged tangerine peel (Chen Ju Hong), Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix), Sheng Jiang (Fresh Ginger), scallion whites, and aged rice into a soup.
For spleen accumulation and palpable masses, use seven pig spleens. Pierce each thoroughly with new needles. Rub with one qian of Pi Xiao (Natrii Sulfas). Store in porcelain for seven days. Dry-roast in an iron vessel. Pound together with seven qian of Shui Hong Hua Zi (Buddleja Seed) into powder. Mix with unadulterated wine. Take on an empty stomach. Cured in one dose for cases under one year, two doses for under five years, six doses for under ten years.
Note: Humans should never eat the spleens of any six domestic animals throughout their lives. (Sun Simiao)
Pig Heart (Zhu Xin)
Taste and Nature: Sweet, salty, neutral. Indications: Treats fright pathogens, sorrow and resentment, deficient palpitations, and rebellious qi. Postpartum wind-stroke in women, blood and qi fright and panic. (Theory: As pigs store water, the heart can calm mental confusion.)
Attached Formula: For heart deficiency with spontaneous sweating and insomnia, break open one pig heart with blood. Add two liang each of Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix) and Dang Gui (Angelica Sinensis). Boil until cooked, remove the herbs, and eat the heart. Cured after several doses.
Caution: Excessive consumption damages the heart. Do not consume with Wu Zhu Yu (Evodia Fruit). (Su Song)
Pig Blood (Zhu Xue)
Mix with Zhusha (Cinnabar) powder. Indications: Treats fright epilepsy, mania, and inverted pustules in smallpox. (Principle: "Heart returns to heart, blood guides blood.") With Long Nao (Borneol)...
Attached Formula: For evil heat in the heart disease, use one pig heart's blood, one spoonful of Dian Hua (Indigo Naturalis) powder, and one liang of Zhusha (Cinnabar) powder. Grind together, form pills the size of wu zi (Cocculus orbiculatus seeds). Take twenty pills with wine.
For blackened and depressed smallpox pustules, collect pig heart blood in the twelfth lunar month, dry it in a bottle. Use one qian each time, add a little Long Nao (Borneol), grind evenly, and take with wine. The color becomes red and lively shortly after; this is miraculous. If no dried blood is available, use fresh blood.
Tail Blood (Wei Xue)
Use this because its movement is ceaseless, and it treats conditions below. (Contrasted with rooster comb blood which treats conditions above.) Pigs are water-storing animals; their blood is cold in nature, capable of resolving toxicity and restraining yang.
Pig Gallbladder (Zhu Dan)
Taste and Nature: Bitter, cold. Actions: Clears the heart organ, cools the liver and spleen, treats constipation. (Combined with vinegar and inserted into the anus, sour and bitter nourish yin, moisten dryness, and purge stool.) Treats chronic diarrhea that alternates between stopping and continuing. (Er Sheng Wan) Promotes urination. (Mixed with hot wine) Kills pediatric malnutrition worms, treats red eyes and corneal opacity.
Attached Formula: Er Sheng Wan (Two Sage Pills). Use one liang each of Huang Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma) and Huang Bai (Phellodendri Cortex) powder. Boil with pig gallbladder, mix and form pills the size of mung beans. Dosage according to child's age. Take with rice water. (Note: Some use pig bile to stir-fry Huang Lian and Chai Hu (Bupleuri Radix) to treat alternating diarrhea/stopping effectively, as it harmonizes yin and calms liver blood and wind.)
Shanghan (Cold Damage) with macules appearing on the fifth or sixth day: Zhu Dan Ji Zi Tang (Pig Gallbladder and Egg Decoction). Use three he of pig bile and Ku Jiu (Vinegar), and one egg. Boil together for three boils. Divide and take. Recovery occurs with sweating.
For urinary retention, external treatment: Use pig gallbladder juice directly to cover the glans penis for one to two hours; urine flows spontaneously upon entry of juice.
For excessive thirst (Xiao Ke): Use five male pig gallbladders and one liang of Ding Fen (Lead Carbonate). Boil together, form pills the size of euryale seeds. Dissolve two pills in the mouth and swallow. Twice daily.
Pig Liver (Zhu Gan)
Taste and Nature: Bitter, warm. Actions: Tonifies the liver and brightens the eyes, stops recurrent dysentery. Formula: Slice one pig liver. Stir-fry one liang of Xing Ren (Apricot Seed). In a clean pot, layer liver and almonds. Add two sheng of Tong Bian (Child's Urine). Simmer on low heat until dry. Eat. Once daily. Dysentery stops naturally.
Note: Those taking medicinal herbs do not eat pig liver. (Li Shizhen/Bin Hu)
Pig Lung (Zhu Fei)
Taste: Sweet. Nature: Slightly Cold. (Beneficial when combined with Da Ma Ren (Hemp Seed)). Indications: Treats lung deficiency cough. Slice with bamboo knife, stir-fry with sesame oil until cooked, eat with porridge. For lung deficiency cough with blood, boil lung, dip in Yi Yi Ren (Coix Seed) powder, and eat.
Pig Intestine (Zhu Chang)
Taste: Sweet. Nature: Slightly Cold. Actions: Moistens intestines and treats dryness, regulates bloody dysentery and intestinal toxin, removes wind-heat from large and small intestines.
Attached Formula: For intestinal wind and intestinal toxin, put pig intestine with Huang Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma) powder, boil until soft, pound into pills the size of wu zi (Cocculus orbiculatus seeds). Take thirty pills with rice water.
Another formula: Fill with Huai Hua (Sophora Flower) powder, tie securely, boil in vinegar until soft, pound into pills the size of wu zi (Cocculus orbiculatus seeds). Take twenty pills with warm wine.
Caution: Excessive consumption stirs cold qi.
Pig Kidney (Zhu Shen)
Taste and Nature: Salty, cold. Indications: Suitable for kidney deficiency-heat. Contraindicated for kidney qi deficiency-cold. Formulas using it treat lower back pain and kidney deficiency by borrowing its guiding property. It is a mistake to consider it a constant food for tonifying the kidney.
Attached Formula: For heart qi deficiency and damage, use one pig kidney (loin). Boil in two bowls of water until reduced to half a bowl. Chop finely. Add half liang each of Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix) and Dang Gui (Angelica Sinensis). Boil until eight parts remain. Eat the kidney, washing it down with the broth. Remaining material forms pills.
For chronic diarrhea that does not stop, split one pig kidney, sprinkle with Gu Sui Bu (Drynaria Rhizoma) powder, and roast.
Pig Fat (Zhi)
Taste: Sweet. Nature: Slightly Cold. Texture: Slippery and smooth. Actions: Moistens lungs, disperses wind-heat, benefits blood vessels and intestines, promotes bowel movements. (Drinking heavily with boiling water can resolve dry obstruction.)
Attached Formula: For Guan Ge (Obstruction and Reversal) blockage, use two sheng each of Pig Fat and Jiang Zhi (Ginger Juice). Simmer on low heat until reduced to two sheng. Add five he of wine, mix and simmer. Divide and take.
For sudden loss of voice due to lung heat, refine one jin of Pig Fat, add one jin of Bai Mi (White Honey), refine again. Filter cleanly after a short while. Let cool. Take one spoonful occasionally. Cured immediately. Regular use even without disease also moistens the lungs.
Refine cleanly in the twelfth lunar month for storage.
Sow's Milk (Mu Zhu Ru)
Taste: Sweet, salty. Nature: Cold. Indications: Treats pediatric fright epilepsy. (From birth to one month old, frequently drip sow's milk to prevent fright epilepsy and smallpox/rubella complications.) Pediatric trismus (lockjaw). Drinking sow's milk is very good. Fetal fright within the first month. Mix with a little Zhusha (Cinnabar) and cow's milk, apply to the mouth. Very effective.
Collection Method: Requires a tame sow. When the piglet is drinking, lift the hind leg and quickly stroke to catch the milk. This method is necessary.
Pig Skin (Zhu Fu)
Taste and Nature: Sweet, cold. Indications: Treats Taiyin Shaoyin diarrhea with sore throat, chest fullness, and vexation. There is Zhu Fu Tang (Pig Skin Decoction). Use one jin of Pig Skin, ten dou of water. Boil until five sheng of juice remains. Add one jin of Bai Mi (White Honey) and five he of Bai Fen (Rice Powder). Roast until fragrant and take as powder. (Principle: Its qi enters the kidney first, resolving Shaoyin exogenous heat.)
[Discussion]
The pig is a water animal. In the twelve earthly branches, Hai (Pig) is the extreme of six yin lines, and the pig corresponds to it. In the hexagrams, it belongs to Kan (Water). Thus, it is clear that this animal, abundant in water, is used to treat diseases. Water takes Earth as its master and Fire as its function. It has Liver and Gallbladder as sons, and Lung as mother. For example, Pig Stomach tonifies the middle and supplements qi, which is supplementing the spleen's yin qi. Earth and Water combine virtue; Spleen and Kidney support each other. Thus, it can relieve thirst, stop acute dysentery and debility, and is also used as a main ingredient for treating wasting-thirst and frequent urination.
Its heart treats fright pathogens, sorrow/resentment, deficient palpitations, and rebellious qi. Also, Pig Heart Blood mixed with Zhusha (Cinnabar) and Dian Hua (Indigo Naturalis) treats evil heat in heart disease, benefiting heart fire to exhaust its utility.
As for this animal's liver, it mostly tonifies the insufficiency of yin qi in the liver, unlike sheep liver which can tonify yang. How is this proven? This animal lacks tendons. The Classics say: "The Liver governs tendons." And again: "Yang qi, when refined, nourishes the spirit; when soft, nourishes the tendons." The lack of tendons clearly indicates yang not matching yin. Does its treatment of recurrent dysentery also use the yin of liver qi to transform heat accumulation? However, the prosperous qi of water is in the gallbladder, because Jia Wood is born in Hai, but the Liver (Yi Wood) is not so; Yi Wood dies in Hai and is born in Wu.
The lung can tonify the lung and treat lung deficiency cough with blood, and the large intestine treats lower bleeding, all taking the surplus yin for tonification. The pig is a water animal, with specific qi in the kidney. The kidney is indeed the source of all zang-fu organs. Lizhen said its nature is cold and cannot tonify Mingmen essence and qi. Observing medical texts, it only treats wasting-thirst and mentions no other uses. Is this not a clear proof?
Except for the fat in the stomach, the rest of the pig is toxic and causes disease. (Zhong Chun) For those with exterior colds, eating it worsens the condition. Eating it after malaria recovery causes recurring chills and fever. Eating it for traumatic injuries depletes blood and qi. Obese people eating much stir wind and generate phlegm. Thin people eating much assist fire and create heat. All these assist the excess pathogenic factors and commit the fault of ignoring warnings. (Jia Mo)
