Ginseng (Ren Shen) with the rhizome removed is finely chopped. It is decocted like ordinary herbs: water is added in a silver or earthenware vessel, and boiled until half remains. The dregs are decocted twice more, then filtered. The collected liquid is concentrated over alternating mild and strong heat until thick. This is the method for making pastes from various herbs. (From *Danxi Cuanyao*)
Fuzi Decoction treats Qi deficiency and Yang weakness, unremitting spontaneous sweating, and limb fatigue.
Astragalus Root (Huangqi), rhizome removed, honey-fried; Aconite Root (Fuzi), processed, skin and umbilicus removed, equal parts.
Crush these ingredients. Take 4 qian per dose with 2 zhan of water and 10 slices of fresh ginger. Boil to 8 fen, filter, and take warm before meals at any time. (From *Jisheng Xufang*) [Note: This formula originally comes from *Wei Shi*, treating night sweats.]
Shenfu Decoction treats insufficiency of true Yang, rapid upper-body breathing, spontaneous and night sweats, and dizziness due to Qi deficiency. It is suitable for all conditions of Yang deficiency and Qi weakness.
Ginseng Root (Renshen), 0.5 liang; Aconite Root (Fuzi), processed, skin and umbilicus removed, 1 liang.
Crush these ingredients. Divide into three doses. Use 2 zhan of water and 10 slices of fresh ginger. Boil to 8 fen, filter, and take warm before meals. (Ibid.) [Note: This was originally the Ginseng Decoction for Spleen deficiency in *Shengji Zonglu*. *Lantai Guifan* uses it for sudden collapse of Yin-Yang, Blood, and Qi; it is also an emergency rescue formula. Note: *Wei Shi*'en Chenfu Tang treats lower deficiency with upper excess and impaired Qi movement, using Fuzi, Aquilaria Wood (Chenxiang), and Renshen. Yan's version removes Renshen; neither is recorded here.]
Various formulas for tonification and calming the Heart:
Dajianzhong Decoction treats five labors and seven injuries, abdominal urgency, yellow-red urine, dribbling after urination, dreams of intercourse with spirits, spermatorrhea, and deficiency-fatigue from fright. (Excerpt)
Malt Sugar (Yitang), 0.5 jin; Astragalus Root (Huangqi); Polygala Root (Yuanzhi); Angelica Root (Danggui) [absent in *Qianjin Yi*]; Alisma Rhizome (Zexie), each 3 liang; Paeonia Root (Shaoyao); Ginseng Root (Renshen); Dragon Bone (Longgu); Licorice Root (Gancao), each 2 liang; Fresh Ginger (Shengjiang), 8 liang; Jujube (Dazao), 20 pieces.
Crush these eleven ingredients. Boil in 1 dou of water to obtain 2.5 sheng. Add malt sugar when ready and melt it. Take 8 ge per dose. Adjust as needed, another dose may follow. (From *Qianjin Fang*) *Jianyi Fang* cites *Jiuyuan Fang*, removing Yitang and Dazao, to treat abdominal urgency/pain, loss of essence in urination/defecation, deficiency-heat night sweats, four-limb fatigue, joint pain, bitter taste, dry tongue, palpitations, shortness of breath, and gradual emaciation. *Suwen* states: Kidney disease transmitting to the Heart causes muscle/tendon traction and urgency, lower abdominal heat, and discharge of white fluid. *Zuo Zhuan* states: Loss of spirit is called "Gu" disease, indicating failure of true essence to remain. If urine is slippery and frequent without restraint, it is due to the bladder gate not closing and fluids failing to store; caused by excessive thought scattering Heart Qi. This formula is excellent. For severe Qi deficiency, add 2 liang of prepared Fuzi. For lower back pain and tendon stiffness, add Guizhi. *Guanjian Liangfang* treats excessive thought consuming Heart Qi, dissipating Yang Qi, failing to gather Spirit, leaving Yin unrooted, causing red or white urine, even spermatorrhea/frequent urination, and nocturnal dreams of ghost intercourse; add Lotus Seed Flesh (Shilian Rou) to this formula.
Zaoren Decoction treats severe deficiency labor, nocturnal emission, weak penis/testicles, depletion of Blood and Qi, or injury from sex after drunkenness/fullness, fright, palpitations, and abdominal urgency.
Sour Jujube Kernel (Zaoren), 2 he; Ginseng Root (Renshen), 2 liang; Paeonia Root (Shaoyao); Cinnamon Twig (Guixin), each 1 liang; Astragalus Root (Huangqi); Licorice Root (Gancao); Poria (Fuling); White Dragon Bone (Bailonggu); Oyster Shell (Muli), each 2 liang; Fresh Ginger (Shengjiang), 2 slices; Pinellia Tuber (Banxia), 1 sheng; Alisma Rhizome (Zexie), 1 liang.
Crush these twelve ingredients. Boil in 9 sheng of water to obtain 4 sheng. Take 7 ge per dose, three times daily. If unable to eat and abdominal urgency exists, add 6 liang of Guixin. (From *Qianjin Fang*) *Shenghui Fang* uses Ren Shen San for deficiency labor with shortness of Qi, limb pain, mental restlessness/heat, and insomnia; remove Guixin, Fuling, Banxia, Zexie from this formula, add Ophiopogon Tuber (Maidong), Danggui, Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome (Baizhu). *Jifeng* Ren Shen Zhu San treats deficiency labor with palpitations and unsettled mind; remove Fuling, Shengjiang, Banxia, add Yuanzhi, Tianma (Fushen - note: text says Fushen).
Guipi Decoction treats spleen damage from overeating; spleen damage causes yellow complexion and propensity to sleep. This formula is indicated. (From *Yifang Kao*) [Note: This refers to the version adding Danggui and Yuanzhi; see Guipi Decoction under "Forgetfulness" later.]
Rongzhu Dan treats Heart deficiency with low Blood, restless spirit, fright/confusion, vivid dreams, and disturbed sleep.
Deer Antler (Lurong), hair removed, steamed in wine, 1 liang; Cinnabar (Zhusha), 0.5 liang, finely ground, water-washed, honey-fried (preferred).
Grind to fine powder. Make pills with cooked jujube flesh, size of Sophora seeds. Take 40 pills per dose, delivered with decoction of fried sour jujube kernels. Take before noon and before bed. (From *Jisheng Xufang*)
Various Yin-tonifying formulas:
Liuwei Dihuang Wan (Original title *Jinkui* Shenqi Wan, post-script says: i.e., Liuwei Dihuang Wan. Revised here). Treats emaciation, weakness/fatigue, chronic Kidney Qi deficiency, chronic/worsening debility, night sweats with fever, simultaneous damage of five Zang organs, spermatorrhea, and blood in stool/urine.
Chinese Yam (Shanyao); Cornelian Cherry Fruit (Shanzhuyu), each 4 liang; Alisma Rhizome (Zexie); Moutan Bark (Mudanpi); White Poria (Bailingfu), each 3 liang; Prepared Rehmannia Root (Shudihuang), 8 liang.
Grind to powder. Honey-pill size of Sophora seeds. Take 50-60 pills, warm water on empty stomach. (From *Danxi Xinfa*) [Note: Originally from *Xiao'er Yaozheng Zhijue*.] There is also Bawu Shenqi Wan, which gently tonifies Kidney Qi, strengthens teeth, and preserves youth; add Cinnamon Twig (Guizhi) and Schisandra Berry (Wuweizi) to this formula. [Note: For long-term use of Shenqi Wan, remove Fuzi, add Wuweizi; originally from *Zhouhou Fang*.] *Yifang Kao* records Kidney Labor: difficulty bending/extending back, difficult urination with dribbling, damp scrotum with sores, abdominal urgency, red-yellow urine; treat with Liuwei Dihuang Wan plus Phellodendron Bark (Huangbai) and Anemarrhena Rhizome (Zhimu). Some people cough all day, expectorate phlegm, pant slightly, and feel short of breath upon slight movement. People think it is Heart Fire punishing Lung Metal, but who knows it is self-damage of Lung Qi? Treatment should greatly tonify Lung Qi while supplementing Kidney Water. Use Liuwei Dihuang Tang, add Maidong and Wuweizi, give in large doses. Long-term use makes Kidney robust and Lung robust. (From *Bianzheng Lu*)
For Kidney deficiency with dark complexion, cold/swollen feet, tinnitus/deafness, emaciated limbs, weak knees/shins, difficult urination (variable amount), lower back/spine pain: use Bawei Wan plus Lurong and Wuweizi, named Shibu Wan. (From *Baoyuan*)
Dabu Yuan Jian treats severe depletion of Qi and Blood in men and women, loss of spiritual control, and critical conditions. It is the primary formula for reversing heaven's decline, assisting transformation, saving the root, and cultivating origin.
Ginseng Root (Renshen) [Tonifies Qi/Yang, main ingredient, 1-2 qian to 1-2 liang]; Stir-fried Chinese Yam (Shanyao), 2 qian; Prepared Rehmannia Root (Shudi) [Tonifies Essence/Yin, main ingredient, 2-3 qian to 2-3 liang]; Eucommia Bark (Duzhong), 2 qian; Angelica Root (Danggui) [2-3 qian, remove if diarrhea]; Cornelian Cherry Fruit (Shanzhuyu), 1 qian [remove if aversion to acid/acid regurgitation]; Goji Berry (Gouqi), 2-3 qian; Honey-fried Licorice Root (Zhigancao), 1-2 qian.
Boil in 2 zhong of water to 7 fen. Take warm after meals. If Origin-Yang is insufficient with much cold, add Fuzi, Rougui, or Paojiang as appropriate. (From *Jingyue Quanshu*)
Daying Jian treats deficiency of true Yin, Essence, and Blood; in women, delayed menstruation and low blood; lower back/knee/joint/bone pain.
Angelica Root (Danggui) [2-3 qian or 5 qian]; Prepared Rehmannia Root (Shudi) [3-5-7 qian]; Goji Berry (Gouqi), 2 qian; Honey-fried Licorice Root (Zhigancao) [1-2 qian]; Eucommia Bark (Duzhong), 2 qian; Achyranthes Root (Niuxi), 1.5 qian; Cinnamon Bark (Rougui) [1-2 qian].
Boil in 2 zhong of water to 7 fen. Take warm after meals. If cold stagnation in meridians prevents Qi/Blood flow and causes severe bone/joint pain, must add 1-2 qian of processed Fuzi for efficacy. (Ibid.)
For deficiency labor, benefiting Zang Qi, long-term use lightens the body and preserves complexion, treats low essence, strengthens will/power, and tonifies deficiency: Di Huang Jian Wan is suitable.
Fresh Rehmannia Root (Shengdihuang), 5 jin (clean, plump); Giant Vine Seeds (jutengzi), 3 liang; Achyranthes Root (Niuxi), 3 liang (remove seedlings); Cinnamon Twig (Guixin), 3 liang; Fresh Polygonatum Rhizome (Sheng Huangjing), 5 jin (clean, pounded with Shengdihuang in wooden mortar until mushy, juice squeezed out, then mixed with 3 sheng of wine, slow-boiled in silver pot to paste). Aconite Root (Fuzi), 3 liang; Dry Lacquer (Ganqi), 3 liang (crushed, stir-fried until smoke appears); Cistanche Stem (Roucongrou), 3 liang; Psoralea Fruit (Buguzhi), 3 liang; Dodder Seed (Tusizi), 3 liang; Deer Antler Glue (Lujiaojiao), 3 liang (crushed, stir-fried until yellow/dry).
Grind herbs to powder. Mix with Di Huang/Huangjing paste. Pound over 1000 times. Pill size of Sophora seeds. Take 30 pills on empty stomach with warm wine, again before evening meal. (From *Shenghui Fang*)
Xuanhe Ci Si Wan treats young men with excessive sexual desire, depletion of Essence/Blood, exhaustion of Heart/Kidney Qi, spermatorrhea/white turbidity, lower back pain, dark complexion, deafness/blurred vision, dry mouth/weak legs, thirst/frequent urination, nocturnal ghost intercourse, and impotence.
Angelica Root (Danggui), soaked in wine, baked dry, 0.5 jin; Dodder Seed (Tusizi), soaked in wine, cleaned, crushed while wet, baked dry, weighed 1 jin; Coix Seed (Yiyiren); Sacred Mushroom (Fushen), wood removed; Lotus Seed Flesh (Shilianrou), skin removed; Deer Antler Frost (Lujiaoshuang); Prepared Rehmannia Root (Shudihuang), each 4 liang.
Grind to powder. Crush 2 jin of Astragalus Root (Huangqi), soak in 6 sheng of water overnight. Rinse next morning until flavor is faint. Filter. Boil juice in silver/earthenware pot to paste. Mix with herb powder. Pound thousands of times. Pill size of Sophora seeds. Take 50 pills, increase to 100. Deliver with rice soup or warm wine, on empty stomach. Regular use calms the center and spirit, secures Essence/Blood, benefits Qi, preserves complexion, and prolongs life. (From *Sanyuan*) [Note: Many Song dynasty formulas are like this; recording these two for now.]
For Kidney deficiency-cold, bone萎 (osteomalacia/weakness), lack of strength, heavy waist/knees, difficult walking, Qi deficiency, poor appetite: Buguzhi Wan.
Psoralea Fruit (Buguzhi), 2 liang (lightly stir-fried); Trigonella Foenum-Graecum Seed (Huluba), 1 liang (lightly stir-fried); Walnut Kernel (Hutao Rang), as needed.
Pound first two ingredients to powder. Mix with pounded walnut until smooth. Add small amount of glutinous rice porridge. Pill size of Sophora seeds. Take 20 pills with warm wine (salt water is also acceptable), on empty stomach before meals.
