For sha (sand disease) located on the back of the spine, above and below the cervical vertebrae, as well as in the chest, hypochondrium, both shoulders, back, and arms, scrape using a copper coin dipped in sesame oil. For sha on the head, forehead, and legs, use cotton yarn or ramie (KT hemp) dipped in sesame oil to scrape. For sha within the soft flesh of the lower and upper abdomen, rub with salt using the hand.
Scrape one line down the central depression at the back of the neck; scrape one line on each of the large tendons on both sides at the back of the neck; scrape one diagonal line in the soft flesh creases below both shoulders and above the hypochondrium on the anterior body; scrape three lines on each side in the soft creases of the bilateral hypochondriac ribs; scrape one line on the soft flesh area where each shoulder meets near the Jianjing (GB21) acupoint; scrape vertically along both sides of the spinal column, one line from below the neck to the waist; scrape three lines on each side in the soft creases behind the hypochondriac ribs. All the aforementioned areas are scraped using a copper coin dipped in salt water. For the inner aspect of both arms, use a strand of ramie (KT hemp), twisted into a loose rope, dipped in water to scrape, until red-purple sha marks appear. The aforementioned acupoints and methods treat all types of sha syndrome. Specifically, scraping the cubital fossa (arm bend) with ramie treats sha causing dizziness and nausea. If it is not a pathological condition, scraping will not produce red-purple marks.
Liu Songfeng stated: The previous method of scraping sha was derived from the book *Shazhang Yuheng*. The newly defined scraping method has been used repeatedly with consistent efficacy; it is recorded here for reference and selection.
For sha affecting the skin and muscles, scraping with oil and salt water prevents the pathogenic toxin from attacking inward. For sha affecting the flesh and blood, observe the cyanotic purple veins and puncture them, allowing the pathogenic toxin to be discharged. For internal-form sha, one must differentiate the involved meridians and zang-fu organs, and determine whether the pathology lies in the qi level or the blood level, so that the pathogen can be dissipated and its root eradicated. (This passage indicates that medicinal treatment should be employed.)
