Gang Jing (Spasm characterized by stiffness of the neck and back without sweating) presents with headache, stiffness and rigidity of the nape, and convulsive movements or reversal of the hands and feet; in severe cases, opisthotonos (arching of the back like a bow) occurs, accompanied by fever and absence of sweat. This is caused by an excess of Wind-Heat. Heat injures Ying-Blood, causing sudden contraction of the sinews and vessels; Wind enters the meridians, leading to spasms of the limbs and joints. The heaviness of the body and spasm of the sinews occur because Heat pathogen is retained by Dampness; therefore, although there is sweating, the fever does not subside.
