(Wan, from Zhu Danxi) Zhulian Liuyi Wan (Coptis and Evodia Six-to-One Pill), indicated for vomiting and acid regurgitation caused by Fire stagnation in the Liver channel. [Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma) 6 liang (stir-fried with ginger juice), Wuzhuyu (Evodiae Fructus) 1 liang (soaked in salt water), also known as Zhulian Wan. When Liver Qi is Excess, pain occurs, or acid vomit appears. Heart is the Son of Liver; thus, Huanglian is used to drain Heart Fire and clear heat, ensuring that Fire does not overact on Lung Metal, so that Metal can control Wood and pacify the Liver. Wuzhuyu enters the Jueyin Liver channel to move Qi and resolve depression, and can also guide Heat downward; therefore, it serves as a counter-agent (Fan Zuo). Cold conditions are treated with direct methods, while Heat conditions are treated with counter-methods, allowing them to complement each other to achieve efficacy. "Zuojin" (Left Metal) means enabling the Metal of the Lung, which resides on the right, to flow to the left thereby pacifying the Liver.] If Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) is added, it is named Wuji Wan (Wu-Ji Pill), which brings peace when taken for Heat diarrhea and Heat dysentery. (Wu corresponds to Stomach Earth, Ji corresponds to Spleen Earth; adding Shaoyao attacks the Liver to soothe the Spleen, preventing Wood from overacting on Earth.)
For treating Stomachache, the principle of using hot medicine for cold conditions is similar. [Huanglian 6 liang, Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata) 1 liang, also employing counter-agents.]
(San, from Qian Yi) Shengdi (Rehmanniae Radix) and Mutong (Akebiae Caulis), along with Gancao Gao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma tip) and Zhuye (Phyllostachydis Folium), these four items attack together. Mouth ulcers and painful dribbling urine due to Small Intestine Fire, guiding Heat out together through urination. [Equal parts decocted. Shengdi cools Blood and nourishes Heart Blood, Zhuye clears Heart Qi, Mutong drains Heart Fire into the Small Intestine, Gancao Gao reaches the Kidney meridian and penis to relieve pain.]
Use Yin Chaihu (Stellariae Radix), Hu Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma - note: context implies specific usage here, likely referring to Coptis or related bitter-cold herbs, but text says Hu Lian which usually refers to Coptis, however standard formula often uses Coptis/Huanglian. Text says "Hu Lian", I will translate as Hu Lian/Coptis based on text, though typically Huanglian is used. Wait, text says "Hu Lian Qin Jiao Bie Jia". In Qing Hao Bie Jia Tang variants, sometimes Coptis is used. I will stick to text: Hu Lian). Qin Jiao (Gentianae Macrophyllae Radix) and Bie Jia (Testudinis Carapax et Plastrum) correspond. Digupi (Lycii Cortex), Qinghao (Artemisiae Annuae Herba), Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma), and Gancao ensure no worry for Bone-steaming Consumption Fever. [Yin Chaihu 1.5 qian, Hu Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma), Qin Jiao, Bie Jia (scalded with urine of young boy), Digupi, Qinghao, Zhimu each 1 qian, Gancao (roasted) 0.5 qian. Digupi, Hu Lian, and Zhimu calm internal Heat; Chaihu, Qinghao, and Qin Jiao scatter exterior pathogens, guiding the herbs into the bones to tonify Yin; Gancao harmonizes the herbs and drains Fire.]
(Yin, from Li Dongyuan) Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Lian (Huanglian/Coptidis Rhizoma), Shuniu (Arnebiae/Radix Arnebiae? No, Shuniu Zi is Niubangzi/Burdock Fruit. Text says "Shuniu", likely short for Shiniu/Niubangzi), Xuan Shen (Scrophulariae Radix), Gancao, Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix), and Lan Gen (Isatidis Radix) are companions. Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma), Chaihu, Mabo (Mopans Spora), Lianqiao (Forsythiae Fructus), Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Jiangcan (Bombyx Batryticatus), and Bohe (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba) are ground into powder for chewing. [Huangqin (wine-processed), Huanglian, Shiniu (Niubangzi/Arctii Fructus), Lan Gen, Mabo, Lianqiao, Bohe each 1 qian, Jiangcan, Shengma each 0.7 qian, taken as powder, or made into honey pills for holding in mouth. ] Alternatively, add Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) and Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma), (for deficiency add Renshen, for constipation add Dahuang). It can defend against Datou Tianxing (Big Head Plague). (Datou Tianxing: relatives do not visit each other; those infected often cannot be saved. Original text states: Huangqin and Huanglian drain Heart and Lung Fire as Sovereign (Jun) herbs; Xuan Shen, Chenpi, and Gancao drain fire and tonify Lung as Minister (Chen) herbs; Lianqiao, Bohe, Shiniu, Lan Gen, Jiangcan, and Mabo dissipate swelling, detoxify, and calm wheezing as Assistant (Zuo) herbs; Shengma and Chaihu disperse Yang of the Yangming and Shaoyang channels; Jiegeng acts as a boat and oar, preventing downward movement. Li Dongyuan said: This is pathogenic heat lodging between the Heart and Lung, attacking upward to cause swelling in the head and face. Using Chengqi Tang to purge would be punishing the innocent. Thus, this formula was created, saving many lives.)
