Liu Hejian treated Lei Tou Feng (Thunderhead Wind) by heavily using two herbs: Shengma (Rhizoma Cimicifugae) and Cangzhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis). (These two herbs are named Shengma Tang in the *Jufang*.) One lotus leaf is added to raise Stomach Qi, allowing the pathogen to scatter from above without transmitting to the middle. (Swelling and pain with nodules on the head and face are called Lei Tou Feng; another description says the head feels like thunder. Li Dongyuan stated: When pathogens are in the Three Yang meridians, one must not overuse heavy cold medicines to avoid injuring the innocent healthy Qi. Therefore, Qingzhen Tang was formulated to raise Yang and resolve toxicity, likely deriving its name from the meaning of "Zhen" as thunder.)
In the formula from *Jisheng Fang*, Fangji (Radix Stephaniae Tetrandrae), Sangpiao (Cortex Mori), Beimu (Bulbus Fritillariae Cirrhosae), and Gualouzi (Semen Trichosanthis) are used. Additionally, Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae), Zhike (Fructus Aurantii), Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis), Yiren (Semen Coicis), Xingren (Semen Armeniacae Amarum), Huangqi (Radix Astragali Membranacei), and Baihe (Bulbus Lilii) are decocted with fresh ginger. (Jiegeng, Fangji, Gualou, Beimu, Danggui, Zhike, Yiren, and Sangbipi each at 5 fen; Huangqi at 7 fen; Xingren, Baihe, and Gancao each at 3 fen; decocted with ginger.) For Lung Abscess (Fei Yong) presenting with expectoration of pus or dry throat, if constipation is present, Dahuang (Radix et Rhizoma Rhei) can be added for purgation. (Another version includes Renshen but excludes Zhike. Huangqi tonifies Lung Qi; Xingren, Yiren, Sangpiao, and Baihe tonify the Lung and clear fire; Gualou and Beimu moisten the Lung and eliminate phlegm; Gancao and Jiegeng lift Qi and Blood, benefit the diaphragm, and disperse cold; Fangji reduces swelling, dispels wind, drains dampness, and clears heat; Danggui harmonizes blood; Zhike regulates Qi.)
The Pill formulation contains Bohe (Herba Menthae), Chuanxiong (Rhizoma Chuanxiong), Shishuang (Mucilage Diospyros Kaki), Gancao, Jiegeng, and Fangfeng. It is made into honey pills to treat Re Ge (Heat Obstruction), characterized by morning hemoptysis and persistent redness of the cheeks. (The cheeks correspond to the Lung and Liver areas. Morning hours (Yin and Mao times) are when Wood Qi is prosperous. Excessive Wood generates Fire, which attacks Metal (Lung). Bohe is used in 10 liang; Chuanxiong, Shishuang, Gancao, Fangfeng, and Xijiao (Cornu Rhinocerotis) each in 2 liang; Jiegeng in 3 liang; formed into pills with honey. Chuanxiong is a Qi-moving herb within blood-invigorating herbs, dispersing stasis and raising clarity; Fangfeng is an envoy for blood herbs, searching out Liver pathogenic factors and draining Lung fire. Bohe regulates blood and dissipates heat, clearing the throat and removing steaming bone disorder sensations; Xijiao cools the Heart and clears the Liver; Shishuang generates fluids and moistens the Lung; Gancao moderates the upward-flaring fire; Jiegeng carries the other herbs upward.)
The Drink formulation (by Tao Jian'an) includes Zhizi (Fructus Gardeniae), Lianhua (Flos Loranthi/often refers to Coptidis Rhizoma in this context, i.e., Huanglian), Xijiao, Zhimu (Rhizoma Anemarrhenae), Xuanshen (Radix Scrophulariae), and Shengdi (Radix Rehmanniae Glutinosae). Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum), Chaihu (Radix Bupleuri), Renshen (Radix Ginseng), and Gancao are combined. If stool is solid, remove Renshen and add Dahuang. (Remove Renshen, add Dahuang.) Decoct with Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma) and Zao (Fructus Jujubae), adding one spoonful of vinegar. This formula addresses Yang pathogens retained internally as excess syndromes. (Although macules result from Stomach Heat, they are also aided by Fire from various meridians. Qingdai and Huanglian clear Liver Fire; Zhizi clears Stomach Fire. Chaihu acts as the guide to reach the muscle layer; Jiang and Zao act as envoys to harmonize Ying and Wei. When heat toxins enter the interior, it is often due to Stomach deficiency; thus, Renshen and Gancao are used to benefit the Stomach. Vinegar is added because sour flavors have an astringent effect.)
