(Yan's) Li, (the formula uses) Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Baizhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix), Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma), and Mutong (Akebiae Caulis). Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma), and Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) are taken with tea; this formula attacks nasal polyps. [Damp-heat in the Lung Meridian steams upward to the brain, enters the nose, and generates polyps, similar to how fungi grow on damp land when heated. All herbs are in equal parts, powdered, three qian per dose. Xinyi (Magnoliae Flos), Shengma, and Baizhi can guide the clear Yang of the Stomach upward to the head; Fangfeng and Gaoben (Ligustici Sinensis Rhizoma) enter the vertex to dry dampness and dispel wind; Xixin disperses heat and unblocks orifices; Chuanxiong...]
(Chen Wuyue)'s version includes Bohe (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba); Xinyi, Baizhi, and these four are harmonized. Taken with scallion and tea to soothe the Liver and Lung; as clear Yang ascends and turbid Yin descends, Biyuan (nasal sinusitis) heals. [Cang'erzi (Xanthii Fructus, stir-fried) 2.5 qian, Bohe and Xinyi each 5 qian, Baizhi 1 liang, powdered for administration. All diseases of the head and face are caused by the failure of clear Yang to ascend and the counterflow of turbid Yin. When turbid Qi scorches the brain upward, it causes profuse turbid nasal discharge, forming Biyuan. These herbs raise Yang, unblock orifices, eliminate dampness, and dispel wind, thus treating the condition.]
(San, Wang Jinggong), Shanyao (Dioscoreae Rhizoma) and Renshen (Ginseng Radix), along with Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix), Fuling (Poria), Fushen (Poria with Hostwood), and Yuanzhi (Polygalae Radix) follow. A small addition of Chencha (Cinnabaris), Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix), and Shexiang (Moschus) treats nocturnal emission due to palpitations and depression. [Shanyao 2 liang (stir-fried with milk), Renshen, Huangqi (Astragali Radix, honey-fried), Fuling, Fushen, Yuanzhi (stir-fried) each 1 liang, Jiegeng and Gancao each 3 qian, Chencha 2 qian, Muxiang 2.5 qian, Shexiang 1 qian, powdered. Take 2 qian per dose with wine. Shanyao secures essence; Renshen and Huangqi tonify Qi; Yuanzhi, Fuling, and Fushen clear the Heart and calm the Spirit; Jiegeng and Muxiang soothe the Liver and clear the Lung; Chencha and Shexiang settle the Heart, dissipate stagnation, and ward off evil; Gancao tonifies the Middle and harmonizes all herbs, allowing Essence, Qi, and Spirit to rely on each other, so that pathogenic fire naturally recedes. Without using astringent herbs, it is an excellent formula for treating emission, because it calms the Spirit and benefits Qi, thus also treating palpitations and depression.]
Ten formulas, five attached formulas.
(The Bureau Formula) uses Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma) and Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), assisted by Fuling (Poria) and Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) as ministers. [Banxia (prepared with ginger juice) 2 qian, Chenpi (pith removed) and Fuling each 1 qian, Gancao 0.5 qian, decocted with fresh ginger.] It promotes Qi circulation, regulates the Middle, and eliminates dampness; it is precious for all phlegm-fluid retention. [Chenpi promotes Qi, Gancao harmonizes the Middle, Fuling and Banxia eliminate dampness; with smooth Qi and eliminated dampness, phlegm-fluid naturally disperses.] Dao Tan Tang (Phlegm-Expelling Decoction) added with Nanxing (Arisaematis Cum Bile) and Zhishi (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus) can tame stubborn, congealed phlegm. [Adding Danxing (Bile-treated Arisaema) assists Banxia; adding Zhishi achieves the power of breaking through walls and toppling battlements.] If Zhuru (Bambusae Caulis in Taenia) and Zhishi are added, the decoction is named Wendan Tang (Warm the Gallbladder Decoction), which can calm the Spirit. [Erxun Tang (Two-Aged Phlegm Decoction) plus Zhuru and Zhishi is named Wendan Tang, treating insomnia due to Gallbladder deficiency.] Run Xia Wan (Moisten and Purge Pill, by Danxi) uses only Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium) and Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma); promoting Qi and expelling phlegm, its efficacy is unparalleled. [Chenpi (pith removed) 8 liang, Salt 5 liang (soaked and washed in water), Gancao 2 liang, honey-fried, made into pills with fermented steamed bun paste, taken with ginger soup. Alternatively, boil Chenpi in salt water, dry it, and powder it together with Gancao, named Ershen San (Two Kidneys Powder); do not take excessively,]
