Heaven possesses Yin and Yang. The Wind, Cold, Summer Heat, Dampness, Dryness, and Fire (Six Qi) are received and supported from above by the Three Yin and Three Yang meridians.
Warmth, Coolness, Cold, and Heat constitute the Four Qi, all mirroring Heaven. Warmth and Heat belong to Heaven's Yang. Coolness and Cold belong to Heaven's Yin. This is the Yin and Yang of Heaven.
Earth possesses Yin and Yang. Metal, Wood, Water, Fire, and Earth (Five Elements) respond from below to Growth, Transformation, Harvest, and Storage.
Acrid, Sweet, Pungent, Sour, Bitter, and Salty constitute the Five Flavors, all mirroring Earth. Acrid, Sweet, and Pungent belong to Earth's Yang. Sour, Bitter, and Salty belong to Earth's Yin. This is the Yin and Yang of Earth.
Those with thin flavors belong to Yin within Yang; thin flavors promote unblocking, such as Sour, Bitter, Salty, and Neutral substances. Those with thick flavors belong to Yin within Yin; thick flavors promote purging, such as Sour, Bitter, Salty, and Cold substances. Those with strong aromas belong to Yang within Yang; strong aromas generate heat, such as Acrid, Sweet, Warm, and Hot substances. Those with weak aromas belong to Yang within Yin; weak aromas promote dispersal and venting, such as Acrid, Sweet, Pungent, Neutral, Cool, and Cold substances.
Light and clear substances form images (thin flavors, like Tea); those originating from Heaven tend to move upward.
Heavy and turbid substances form shapes (thick flavors, like Rheum Palmatum/Da Huang); those originating from Earth tend to move downward.
Acrid and Sweet flavors that disperse and diffuse are Yang; Sour and Bitter flavors that induce vomiting and purging are Yin.
Clear Yang issues into the Couli (interstices), being the Clear among the Clear.
Clear Yang fills the four limbs, being the Turbid among the Clear.
Turbid Yin returns to the Six Fu organs, being the Turbid among the Turbid.
Turbid Yin travels to the Zang organs, being the Clear among the Turbid.
