The *Daquan* (Compendium) states: In women, the Kidney meridian connects to the Chong and Ren vessels which anchor the uterus (Bao). Severe lower back pain may lead to miscarriage; therefore, this symptom is of utmost importance. If caused by sprain or strain leading to Qi stagnation, use Tongqi San (Ventilation Powder); if due to Kidney deficiency, use Qing'e Bulao Wan (Qing'e Longevity Pill). The general principle of treatment is to secure the fetus.
Tongqi San Formula (from *Liangfang*): Stir-fry Semen Psoraleae (Pogu Zhi/Buguzhi) on a tile until fragrant, then grind into powder. First, chew one Walnut Kernel (Hetao Ren) thoroughly until soft, then take three qian of the Buguzhi powder mixed with warm wine, taken on an empty stomach. This medicine is most effective for pregnant women suffering from unbearable lower back pain.
Wang Mengying’s commentary: Semen Psoraleae has a hot nature and may harm the fetus; it should only be used temporarily for sprains/strains, or it is safer to consume only Walnut Kernels.
Xue Lizhai stated: For lower back pain caused by Liver Fire agitation, use Xiao Chai Hu Tang (Minor Bupleurum Decoction) with added Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma), Zhi Ke (Aurantii Fructus), and Shan Zhi (Gardeniae Fructus).
Shen Yaofeng said: The area of the waist near the spine belongs to the Kidney; the sides near the hypochondrium belong to the Liver.
The *Daquan* also records: Use soil from before and after a mouse hole, grind into fine powder, mix with Moschus (She Xiang), and take with wine for immediate cure.
The *Chanbao* (Treasures of Childbirth) states: A nodule on the umbilical cord inside the abdomen, held in the infant's mouth, makes noise when the pregnant woman climbs high and raises her arms, causing the nodule to slip out of the infant's mouth. Have the pregnant woman bend her waist close to the ground, as if picking up an object; once the nodule re-enters the infant's mouth, the sound stops. It also states: Using soil from a mouse hole in an empty room, decocted with Chuan Lian Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma), is also effective.
Shen Yaofeng said: It is traditionally believed that the "bell ringing" sound in the abdomen indicates fetal crying. Currently, people treat this by scattering a handful of beans on the ground and having the pregnant woman pick them up carefully, which cures the condition. This is a clever method.
Wang Mengying’s commentary: This statement is incorrect. Wang Qingren said: When the embryo is first formed and has no mouth, what does it suck blood with to nourish itself? Since this is unclear, why not consult with women at home? Verify the facts before writing, so as not to be laughed at by future generations. This view is very profound. I have often said that regarding matters within the body, speculation from outside the body—even by sages—may not always be entirely correct. Therefore, in my humble medical cases, I argue based solely on Qi, Blood, Cold, and Heat. Although this may seem shallow, I dare not deceive others with things I do not believe myself. This spring, while discussing this with Yang Suyuan, we noted that traditional theories regarding Zang-Fu organs are highly questionable. Lord Yang sighed and said, "You can truly be said to have found gaps in reading and not been deceived by the ancients." He then presented me with Wang Qingren’s *Yilin Gaicuo* (Correction of Errors in the Forest of Medicine) from Yutian. Upon reading it, I found that it overturns all medical cases recorded since Xuanyuan and Qibo over four thousand years in a single day. Is this not shocking? However, this gentleman bases his claims on personal observation, not empty talk, and Lord Yang’s verification across various animals showed perfect correspondence. Then, aren't previous precise descriptions of organ shapes merely jokes? Yet, the Western book *Renshen Tushuo* (Illustrated Description of the Human Body) has been circulating in China for over two hundred years, and its description of Zang-Fu organs is roughly similar to Wang’s theory. Yu Lichu, however, had not seen *Yilin Gaicuo*, overly trusted ancient texts, and perpetuated old errors in his *Guisi Leigao*. He claimed that Chinese and foreign organs are completely different, and further fabricated that foreigners have four testicles, which is pure deception.
