Take a large handful of *Ecliptae Herba* (Maohua, 茅花) flowers; if unavailable, use the root instead. For each dose, take one large handful, chop it, add two bowls of water, and decoct until a thick liquid of one bowl remains. Divide this into two doses. Shen Kuo recorded: When Lin Cizhong, a censor, was in Chuzhou, he once visited an old friend. After a long wait, the host finally emerged. When asked why, he replied, "My daughter-in-law is suffering from severe epistaxis (nosebleed) and is near death; I am attending to her emergency and cannot receive guests." A guest at the table said, "I happen to have medicine. Quickly fetch a large handful of Maohua flowers, decoct them into one bowl of thick liquid, and take two small red pills from my pouch. Swallow them with the Maohua tea. One dose will cure it," but he did not disclose the formula. Later, someone heard of this and remarked, "This is merely the efficacy of Maohua flowers." Upon further inquiry, the man laughed heartily and said, "Indeed so. The red pills are actually *Zhusha Hanxiang Wan* (Cinnabar Incense Pill). I used them as a marker because I feared people would not believe in the power of Maohua alone." Shen Kuo also noted that while in Yanzhou, a military officer suddenly suffered from severe epistaxis and was in critical condition; treating him with this method resulted in immediate recovery. Additionally, Xu Dezhan taught those with nosebleeds to urgently moxibustion the depression between the two tendons at the back of the neck, at the hairline. Three moxa cones applied would stop the bleeding immediately. This is because blood enters the brain from this point and flows into the nasal cavity. Even ordinary people can stop nosebleeds by tying a rope tightly around the back of the neck; thus, this moxibustion method is undoubtedly effective.
Grind the bark of charcoal into a fine powder, processing it until extremely fine. If charcoal bark is unavailable, solid charcoal may be used. Mix two qian with rice broth for oral administration. Take four to five times daily, continuing until the sensation of a fishbone stuck in the throat subsides. This method is common in many households. Shen Kuo recorded witnessing its miraculous effect in Handong. A scholar named Liu Hui had a neighbor's child who accidentally swallowed a coin. After administering this remedy mixed with broth, the child passed an object resembling a large dried plum. Upon cutting it open, it was revealed to be a coin wrapped in charcoal. Xu Shijun, the prefect of Chizhou, highly valued this formula and used it repeatedly without fail. In recent years, many have reported its efficacy, so they are not listed in detail here.
*Dangshen Radix* (Danggui, 当归) (half liang, remove the radix head, finely cut), *Ginseng Radix* (Renshen, 人参) (half liang), *Porcine Heart* (Zhu Xin, 猪心) (one, from a male pig, finely cut).
Divide the porcine heart into four slices. Take one slice, add three cups of water, and decoct until one and a half cups remain. Divide into two doses. (Another variation: Use one liang each of Danggui and Renshen, and half a male porcine heart. Finely cut, add five cups of water, decoct until three cups remain, strain the dregs, and divide into two doses.)
