A good prescription for treating epilepsy, Duohun San (Soul-Plundering Powder)
Bombyx Batryticatus (Cicada Slough, *Bai Jiangcan*) (remove silk threads, stir-fry until half-yellow and half-white, 0.5 liang) Shehanshi (Snake-containing Stone, *She Han Shi*) (heat red-hot, quench in rice vinegar seven or eight times, grind into powder) Baifuzi (Prepared Aconitum Carmichaelii Root, *Bai Fuzi*) (prepared, each 1 fen) Raw Silver
Raw Gold Niuhuang (Calculus Bovis, *Niu Huang*) (if unavailable, process with bile and double the dosage) Head of Zaocys (Zaocys Head, *Wu Shao She Tou*) (about 7-8 cun long, roast in wine) Poria (*Fu Ling*) Gastrodia Elata Rhizome (*Tian Ma*) (each 2 liang) Pinelliae Tuber (*Tian Nan Xing*) (weigh 1 fen of powder, soak overnight in fresh ginger juice before use) Pinelliae Tuber Powder (*Ban Xia Mo*) (2 liang, soak overnight in fresh ginger juice, dry separately by roasting) Geelys (*Chi Jiao Wu Gong*) (one piece, soak in wine, roast until scorched) Rhinoceros Horn (*Xi Jiao*) (shave into slices, 2 liang) Borneol (*Nao Zi*) Moschus (*She Xiang*)
Grind the above ingredients into a fine powder. Use steamed jujube flesh to make pills, size like ○. Take 10 to 15 or 20 pills per dose. Decoct silver, gold, and mint leaves in water and take the decoction to swallow the pills. Coat with Cinnabar (*Zhu Sha*).

Discussion: Epilepsy is a specific syndrome. If one says it is transmitted from convulsive disorders due to fright (Jing Feng), ancient texts mention connections between dietary wind, fright, and the three types of epilepsy. If one says it is not transmitted from convulsive disorders due to fright, ancient sayings state that "three episodes of convulsive disorders due to fright become epilepsy." Moreover, in epilepsy, phlegm-heat accumulates excessively, enters the meridians, blocks the heart and lungs, causing obstruction of orifices. Thus, during attacks, symptoms resemble convulsive disorders due to fright or Tian Diao (a type of convulsive disorder). It may be caused by excessive phlegm generation due to fright, or excessive wind generation due to heat. There is difficulty in urination and defecation, obstruction of qi mechanism between upper and lower parts, and mental restlessness and confusion. If this recurs repeatedly, leading to death and revival, sinking and silent without recovery, suddenly qi penetrates the orifices, gradually opening up, and the soul and spirit gain slight peace. However, afterwards, if the heart is touched and brain qi is not smooth, attacks recur as before. Therefore, it is known that epilepsy is caused by deficiency-phlegm, cold saliva, and stubborn accumulation in the chest and diaphragm, where convulsive disorders due to fright gather at the Guan Ge (junction of chest and abdomen). The patient often lacks spirit, the mind is restless and fluctuating. If treatment is not focused and medication does not consolidate, harm will inevitably occur, which is no wonder. The Duohun San formula has proven effective through experience, secret transmission, proper preparation, and miraculous verification. Is it not called a supreme treasure?

Doctors say there are ten types of heat syndromes: Fright Heat, Malnutrition Heat, Wind Heat, Tidal Heat, Cold Damage Heat, Malaria Heat, Accumulation Heat, Carbuncle Heat, Rash Heat, and Residual Toxin Heat.

Discussion: Where there is Fright Heat, there is Wind Heat. Here, Fright Heat involves wind and heat, caused by contracting wind pathogens, similar to Cold Damage Heat. Furthermore, Cold Damage Heat is similar to Rash Heat. Additionally, after Rashes and Smallpox, residual toxins cause heat; similarly, after Cold Damage, residual toxins cause heat.

Discussion on Accumulation Heat: Similar to Obstruction Heat, it flares up periodically like tidal waves; also resembles Malaria Heat. In summary: Tidal Heat occurs at regular intervals.

Discussion on Carbuncle Heat and Malnutrition Heat: They differ in constitution and do not resemble other syndromes. Now, there are four effective prescriptions for treating various heat syndromes. Each targets specific heat syndromes with efficacy. This is not merely categorizing by analogy but treating the root cause. None fail to be effective. No need to combine with other medicines; these four formulas alone are sufficient, never failing. Listed below for careful examination and administration. As the disease heals, the miracle cannot be surpassed. I have discussed this diligently because it is concise and not afraid of labor. Reviewing repeatedly, it is like a good general using troops, combining orthodox and unorthodox tactics, making it impossible for enemies to escape. Although disease manifestations may have similarities and differences, symptom classification is definitive and avoids confusion. □ Since then, the principle of reducing heat is secret and cannot be taught; it must be realized by the mind. This can be called the purest of purities and the best of goods.

Discussion on various heat syndromes:

Discussion on Blood Heat: Manifests as sores all over the body, itching scabies, severe carbuncles, and Long Dai (likely a specific dermatological condition).

Discussion on Bone Heat: External cold with internal heat, manifesting as bone-steaming syndrome.

Discussion on Excess Heat: Vigorous qi and pulse, full qi in five zang and six fu organs, hard stool, scanty or obstructed defecation.

Discussion on Deficiency Heat: Disharmony of Triple Burner and five zang organs, predisposition to malnutrition syndrome, crying and irritability, night sweats, or heat following diarrhea/dysentery.

Discussion on Triple Burner Heat: Empty irritability and thirst in the upper burner, red cheeks, palpitations, crying at night, delirium during sleep.

Discussion on Five-Center Heat: Empty irritability, frequent fright, dark and scanty urine, restless sleep, coarse breathing, or convulsions.

Discussion on Liver Meridian Heat: Red, swollen, painful eyes, discharge, photophobia, muscle spasms, possibly complicated by wind-phlegm.

Discussion on Lung Meridian Heat: Nasal congestion, sores in nose, loss of smell, or unresolved residual toxins.

Discussion on Fetal Heat: The fetus receives maternal dietary influences, causing disharmony of Ying and Wei, residual toxin heat erupting into various diseases, or persistent heat syndromes after birth.

Discussion on Residual Toxin Heat after Cold Damage: Although exterior was resolved, residual heat transmits through vessels or enters meridians, lingering for a long time.

Discussion on Residual Toxin Heat after Rashes: The child's rash did not resolve quickly, leaving residual heat stagnating in the hundred vessels.

Discussion on Neck Nodules with Heat: Soft, large, slightly red nodules are called Fright Qi Nodules; small, linked nodules of varying lengths are residual toxin heat, also called Fright. Infants may suffer from this.

Discussion on Triple Burner Accumulated Toxin Heat: Attacks outwardly towards the throat, called Mumps Heat. Qi and blood stagnation, meridians blocked, heat-toxin attacking causes abscesses and boils.

Discussion on Heat from Smallpox/Rashes: Similar to rash syndromes. Smallpox affects the fu organs, belongs to Yang, thus easy to regulate. Even without medicine, it can heal itself, but beware of toxic ingestion or wind exposure causing adverse reactions.

Discussion on Warm Qi Heat: Caused by seasonal warm pathogens invading sequentially. Children with seasonal warmth who have not had rashes transmit heavily among themselves, all suffering this disease.

Discussion on Small Intestine Heat: Heart meridian dysfunction, dysuria, pain in the urethra.

Discussion on Stomach Heat: Bad breath, vomiting, anorexia, also caused by stomach deficiency-heat.

Discussion on Spleen Heat: Dull mouth, preference for sleep, accumulation of toxic food in spleen not digesting, slightly cold feet.

Discussion on Pathogenic Heat: Lung meridian contracts cold pathogen, yin and yang qi abnormal, phlegm-saliva cough.

Discussion on Chills and Fever: First chills then fever, resembling □, indicating deficiency with accumulation. Any child with abdominal masses (Pi Pi Jia) experiences chills and fever fluctuations.

Discussion on Wind-Cold Heat: Heavy nasal voice, headache, hot feet, resembling Cold Damage syndrome.

Discussion on Summerheat Injury Heat: Irritability, heavy head and eyes, occurring in peak summer or after catching cold.

Discussion on Ying and Wei: Equivalent to Blood Heat.

Discussion on Wei Heat: Equivalent to Qi Heat. Disharmony of Ying and Wei means Qi and Blood do not interact, caused by deficiency.

Discussion on Sinew Heat: Nail-biting drawing blood.

Discussion on Kidney Heat: Disease manifests as gingival bleeding, black teeth, rotting gums, progressing to Gangrene of the Cheeks (Zou Ma Gan) extreme stage.

Discussion on Irritable Heat: Unceasing crying.

Discussion on Restless Heat: Unceasing wailing. All caused by Triple Burner disharmony, accumulated heat in heart, empty irritability and depression.

Discussion on Bian Zheng Heat: Occurs only within 574 days. Every 32 days a change, every 64 days a steam. Eruption within these numbers is normal.

Discussion on Large Intestine Heat: Lung heat transferring internally to the large intestine, causing constipation and obstruction.

Discussion on Urticaria Heat: Wind in Lung meridian at the exterior. Lung governs skin and hair, thus generating urticaria wind.

Discussion on Phlegm Heat: Contracting wind generates phlegm, stagnating in upper burner, transforming into heat over time, or causing nausea/vomiting.

Discussion on Fright Qi Heat: Due to children being frightened, fright qi remains stagnant in upper burner, unable to transform naturally, generating heat-toxin attacking the jaw and neck area.

Discussion on Abdominal Heat: Equivalent to Accumulation Heat syndrome. If accompanied by cold feet, purgatives should be used.

Discussion on Guest Intrusion Heat: Newborns exposed to external relatives' evil qi disrupt their normal state, causing heat.

Discussion on Epilepsy Heat: Convulsive disorders due to fright do not disperse, gathering in meridians or entering zang-fu. Symptoms include frequent loss of consciousness.

Discussion on Convulsion Heat: Also caused by fright entering meridians without dispersing, presenting as slight twitching.

The treatment methods for the above syndromes are classified below.
