[For infants and young children suffering from dysentery due to deficiency accumulation, with abdominal pain, tenesmus (feeling of incomplete defecation), occurring day and night without limit, the following excellent prescription of Shengshu Yinzi (Raw and Cooked Decoction) is suitable.]
Papaveris Pericarpium (four large ones; half processed with honey; for this ingredient alone, it is best to remove all internal residual membranes and floating ridges) Chenpi (two and a half slices, processed with honey) Gancao (two and a half cun, processed with honey) Wumei (two and a half fruits, roasted) Huaizao (two and a half fruits, roasted) Shengjiang (two pieces the size of a finger, roasted) Muxiang (one liang, cut into two and a half slices, roasted) Hezi (two large ones, half roasted) Heidou (sixty grains, half stir-fried) Huangqi (two and a half cun, processed with honey) Baizhu (two pieces the size of a finger, roasted) Chuan Danggui (two and a half cun, roasted)
Each of the above ingredients is used half raw and half cooked. Crush them and mix evenly. For each dose, use "Can Liang" (an ancient unit of weight, referring to a specific dosage here), add one small cup of water, place in a porcelain bottle, and decoct until the liquid reduces by half. Filter out the dregs and administer to the child as desired; even if more is taken, there is no need to worry. All raw Heidou should not be broken but kept whole during decoction for better efficacy.
Zeng Shirong commented: Diseases have distinctions between cold and heat, while medicines have differences between raw and cooked states; diseases have yin and yang variations, while medicines possess the ingenuity of formulation; diseases have excess and deficiency patterns, while medicines follow the hierarchy of Sovereign, Minister, Assistant, and Courier. According to the principles of Sovereign, Minister, Assistant, and Courier, one distinguishes the excess/deficiency nature of medicines and balances raw/cooked proportions to harmonize cold and heat. This is the fundamental method for treating diseases, a formula that harmonizes the intestines and stomach, benefits the Sanjiao (Triple Burner), and stabilizes the five zang organs. Once yin and yang are distinguished, cold and heat dispersed, the intestines and stomach strengthened, the Sanjiao benefited, and the five zang organs regulated, this is entirely due to the ingenuity of medicinal formulation. In this way, food and drink naturally separate clear from turbid, Ying and Wei (Nutritive and Defensive Qi) become correct, waste products naturally accumulate, and diet is naturally accepted. How could diarrhea and dysentery fail to heal? The efficacy of Shengshu Yinzi exhausts the wonders of the world and must not be neglected.
[The excellent prescription of Shenxiao Jiqing Wan (Divine Efficacy Chicken Cyan Pill) for treating all types of dysentery in infants and young children.]
Muxiang (one liang) Tuhuanglian (one fen, remove rootlets) Roudoukou (one large one, raw)
First, crush the above three ingredients into coarse powder. Take the white of an egg (Jiqing) to bind the medicine into a cake. Roast it over slow fire until it turns from yellow to red. When slightly dry, break it apart and grind it into fine powder. Use wheat flour paste to form pills the size of hemp seeds. Administer 30 to 50 pills per dose, washed down with warm rice gruel.
Zeng Shirong commented: Muxiang and Huanglian represent one yin and one yang. Muxiang excels at guiding water metabolism and regulating qi and vessels; Huanglian thickens the intestines and stomach. These two ingredients act as sovereign and minister, assisting each other, with yin and yang in harmony. Added to this is the mild effect of Doukou on the zang organs, stopping diarrhea and dysentery, resulting in excellent efficacy. For any child suffering from diarrhea or dysentery, regardless of the severity of symptoms, it is appropriate to administer this first, regardless of whether the zang organs are cold or hot; the more it is taken, the more effective it becomes. However, the egg white (Jiqing) is toxic; it is precisely this toxicity that guides the medicinal properties to achieve efficacy. If this ingredient is removed, its therapeutic effect will not occur.
