Translation:
It is said that sores appearing in an infant's mouth are caused by heat accumulating in the Heart and Spleen (Zang-Fu organs), manifesting as drooling, irritability, and crying. In severe cases, the infant may refuse to nurse. Excellent remedies and prescriptions have been recorded subsequently. However, when infants begin to suckle milk, white spots may appear inside the mouth, causing irritability and fright. People often do not know the cause and attribute it to spiritual influences. Upon examining the principle, during the months before birth, if the mother indulges in excessive drinking and consumes rich, greasy foods, heat-toxin fetal qi is absorbed by the fetus. After the infant is born, the heat-toxin qi absorbed is entirely dispersed to the exterior. The tongue is connected to the Heart, and the lips belong to the Spleen; thus, what is referred to as "Heart and Spleen Heat" applies here. To reduce qi via purgation, one should not hastily drain the Zang-Fu organs. Instead, use powder of Evodiae Fructus (Wuzhuyu) mixed with rice vinegar applied to the sole of the foot. It will heal overnight. Although Evodiae Fructus is hot in nature, it guides heat downward, achieving excellent results. In cases of heat in the Heart and Lungs, ulcers may appear on the cheeks and palate, initially starting as a few points of rouge-red, gradually spreading mottled like cinnabar, accompanied by body heat. This should be treated primarily with Lianqiao Yin (Forsythia Decoction). One must only avoid fire-based therapies (such as moxibustion); otherwise, there are no other issues.
It is said that fever occurring during the "Bian Zheng" (transformation and steaming) process in infants follows specific timing rules (the first transformation occurs at 32 days, and steaming begins after another 32 days). These changes correspond with natural creative laws, where pulse qi assists growth. If the manifestation exceeds or falls short of expectations, the changes do not match the pulse, steaming is unsmooth, leading to counter-flow of Ying and Wei (Defensive and Nutritive Qi) and disharmony in the Zang-Fu organs. Fetal qi remains latent, and birth damages harmony. Both infant and mother exert themselves; the spirit and pulse become surging, and the body generally receives heat. Those skilled in regulation follow these principles for harmonization. Within seven days of birth, stomach qi is weak, so additional medication is unnecessary; it resolves shortly on its own. The method involves the father and mother each blowing air over the infant's fontanelle seven times. The father chants first: "You are my son,顺应 your suitability. My essence and qi accept destiny without confusing the principles of Yin and Yang. Holy power supports you; slight deviation heals with this blowing. Hurry, as per the decree." The mother then chants: "You are my child, filled with fetal qi. My blood and vessels, though maternal hardship exists, do not obstruct. All spirits sing life, blessed as master. Slight mismanagement heals with this blowing. Hurry, as per the decree." Subsequently, decoct Congbai Xuanshen Tang (Scallion White and Scrophulariae Decoction) or Wumu Tang (Five Woods Decoction). When warm, bathe the infant for immediate effect.
It is said that when fetal qi is sufficient and the infant is about to be delivered, the amniotic sac breaks, and clear fluid flows out first. Once born, blood descends immediately. Due to sluggishness in the uterine qi and slow turning/movement, blood becomes compressed and stasis forms around the eye sockets. Severe cases result in blood flooding the eyes, obscuring the pupil; mild cases present as redness and swelling of the outer eyelids, with rotting and dizziness above and below. Administering cooling medicines will inevitably chill the Zang-Fu organs. Instead, administer Shengshu Dihuang Tang (Raw and Prepared Rehmannia Decoction) to promote the flow of Qi and Blood. Alternatively, chew two Almond seeds (Xingren) finely, mix with three to five spoonfuls of breast milk, add a small amount of Nifen (Calomel/Mercurous Chloride), steam until cooked, wrap in silk cloth, dip, and frequently apply to the eyes for significant efficacy. For severe cases, adding Coptidis Rhizoma (Huanglian) and Mirabilite (Puxiao) is most effective.
