The *Daquan* (Compendium) states: The Qi of the four seasons and eight directions is called Wind. It is typically observed on the day of the Winter Solstice. If the wind blows from its proper direction, it nourishes all things; if it does not blow from its proper direction, it is named "Empty Evil" (Xu Xie), which harms all things. When the human body is deficient, it becomes susceptible to Wind invasion. (Wind is the leader of a hundred diseases; upon invasion, symptoms manifest according to the pathogenic factors carried by the wind. This statement is concise and profound.) If Wind evil lodges in the skin and enters the meridians, it results in numbness and loss of sensation (Wan Bi Bu Ren); if it enters the sinews and vessels, accompanied by Cold, it causes spasms and deviation; accompanied by Dampness, it causes flaccidity and weakness. If it enters the Zang-Fu organs, it leads to mental confusion and palpitations. The Back-Shu points of the five Zang organs are located on the back. When the Zang-Fu are deficient, Cold evil enters through these Shu points, causing various diseases according to the affected Zang-Fu and meridians. If a pregnant woman suffers from Stroke (Zhong Feng) and it is not treated early, it may cause miscarriage.
Xue Ji stated: According to the *Ji Yao*, Wind is fundamentally Heat; when Heat prevails, Wind moves. One should use stillness to overcome dryness, which is equivalent to nourishing Blood. The treatment method requires mild diaphoresis (sweating) and mild purgation. Excessive sweating depletes Wei Qi (Defensive Qi), while excessive purgation damages Ying Qi (Nutritive Blood). Although there are contraindications for sweating and purging, Stroke is distinguished into involvement of the Fu organs (Zhong Fu) and involvement of the Zang organs (Zang Zang). Involvement of the Fu organs often affects the four limbs, presenting with floating pulse, aversion to cold, stiffness, and numbness. Involvement of the Zang organs often affects the nine orifices, presenting with relaxed lips and aphasia, deafness and nasal congestion, blurred vision, and constipation. For involvement of the Fu organs, diaphoresis is indicated; for involvement of the Zang organs, purgation is indicated. Once the exterior and interior are harmonized, treatment should focus on the meridians, using major tonic herbs to nourish the body. This is the essential method for treating Stroke. Pregnant women suffering from this condition should also be treated accordingly, supplemented with fetal-anchoring herbs.
