(The following prescriptions are suitable for the initial stage of deficiency and damage; they should be used with discretion.)
Zengsun Siwu Decoction (Modified Four Substances Decoction): Treats women with Qi and Blood deficiency, manifesting as lethargy and weakness in the four limbs, fatigue, and shortness of breath. It also treats excessive lochia after childbirth, deficiency and damage of Ying and Wei (Nutritive and Defensive Qi), disharmony of Yin and Yang, and alternating chills and fever.
Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Baishao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), Renshen (Ginseng Radix), Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma - honey-fried), all in equal parts.
The above herbs are chopped. Take 4 qian per dose, decoct with one cup of water until reduced to 60%, remove the dregs, and take hot. (Treating blood diseases by treating blood, and Qi diseases by treating Qi, is easily understood by people. However, treating blood diseases by tonifying Qi, and Qi diseases by tonifying Blood, is not fully known by everyone. Hence, there are methods of modification for Siwu Tang. Since Dihuang is cloying and impedes Qi, damaging the Spleen, it is not suitable for those with limb lethargy and shortness of breath, so it should be removed. Renshen and Gancao tonify the Spleen, so they should be added. Paojiang (prepared Ginger) can warm the Middle Jiao and guide Blood back to Qi; this is the subtlety of modification.)
Liushen Tang (Six Spirits Decoction): Treats disharmony of the Spleen Qi, deficiency of Ying and Wei, lethargy and exhaustion, and poor appetite. Taking it tonifies True Qi, improves appetite, and nourishes the skin.
Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Baishaoyao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), Shudihuang (Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata), Huangqi (Astragali Membranacei Radix), Digupi (Lycii Cortex), all in equal parts.
The above herbs are made into a coarse powder. Take 5 qian per dose, decoct with water, and take warm on an empty stomach. (Note: Nourishing muscles and moistening skin is the function of Wei Qi. Wei Qi should not be treated with heat. This prescription uses Huangqi to tonify Wei Qi, and Digupi to clear heat from the Wei level, avoiding the danger of "flaming fire consuming Qi." It further uses Siwu Tang to guide Wei Qi back to the Four Zang Organs to govern Blood, utilizing the function of "mild fire generating Qi." Thus, Ying and Wei become sufficient, and exhaustion disappears. The mention of Spleen disharmony and poor appetite refers to a disease of Qi deficiency; when Qi is sufficient, the condition resolves. This should be understood.)
Shengyu Tang (Sage's Recovery Decoction): Treats irritability due to Blood deficiency, restless sleep, or five-palm heat.
Huangqi (Astragali Membranacei Radix), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix - wine-washed), each 1 qian; Renshen (Ginseng Radix), Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Shudihuang (Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata - wine-washed), Shengdihuang (Rehmanniae Radix - wine-washed), each 5 fen.
Decoct with water and take. (Shengyu Tang focuses on "Blood deficiency causing irritability." However, removing Baishao and using Shengdihuang is to cool the Heart and generate Blood. Is the use of Chuanxiong merely for dispersing constrained Fire? It would be better to replace it with Maidong.)
Jiajian Dajianzhong Tang (Modified Great Middle-Jiao Building Decoction): Treats all deficiencies before and after childbirth in women, irregular menstruation, colic and severe abdominal pain, alternating chills and fever, spontaneous sweating, dry mouth, and thirst.
Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix) 2 liang; Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Huangqi (Astragali Membranacei Radix), Rougui (Cinnamomi Cortex), each 1 liang; Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Zhicao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma - honey-fried), each 7 qian.
Make into a powder. Take 2.5 qian per dose, add ginger and jujube, decoct with water, and take before meals. (Note: The previous three prescriptions use Renshen and Jiang to warm the Middle, or Huangqi and Digupi to tonify Wei and clear heat, or Renshen and Huangqi together, supplementing both interior and exterior, mostly modifying Siwu Tang for the Blood aspect. This prescription is named Jianzhong (Building the Middle) and emphasizes Qi. Rougui's color can unblock Ying Blood, and its aroma/flavor can unblock Wei Qi. Thus, the Classic uses it to unblock blood vessels. Combined with Huangqi, Baizhu, Gancao, ginger, and jujube, its Jianzhong effect is even greater because it combines with the Earth element.)
Danggui Jianzhong Tang (Angelica Building the Middle Decoction): Treats all conditions of Qi and Blood deficiency in women, resulting in deficiency, emaciation, and fatigue.
Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) 4 liang; Baishao (Paeoniae Radix Alba - stir-fried) 6 liang; Rougui (Cinnamomi Cortex - bark removed); Zhigancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma - honey-fried), each 2 liang.
Chop the herbs. Take 3 qian per dose, add 3 slices of fresh ginger and one jujube, decoct with water, and take on an empty stomach. (This prescription takes Danggui and Baishao as the main ingredients, without Huangqi or Baizhu. Although ginger and jujube harmonize the Middle, it builds in the Blood aspect. Understanding the subtlety of combination reveals the ancients' intent.)
Shuanghe San (Double Harmony Powder): Treats deficiency and fatigue after any major illness, tonifying Blood and benefiting Qi. (Shuanghe means specifically harmonizing Ying and Wei, rather than building the Middle. However, this formula is essentially Dajianzhong Tang with Baizhu replaced by Shudihuang, and the dosages differ. One must know that ancients did not adhere rigidly to formulas or methods; reading it yields meanings beyond the words.)
Huangqi (Astragali Membranacei Radix), Shudihuang (Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Chao Baishaoyao (Paeoniae Radix Alba - stir-fried), each 1 qian; Rougui (Cinnamomi Cortex), Zhigancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma - honey-fried), each 5 fen.
Chop the herbs. Take 4 qian per dose, add 3 slices of fresh ginger and two jujubes, decoct with water, and take.
Buzhong Yiqi Tang (Tonify the Middle and Benefit Qi Decoction): Treats physical and mental exhaustion, or irregular diet leading to Spleen and Stomach deficiency, sinking of Clear Qi, fever, headache, limb fatigue, irritability, muscle wasting, and gradual emaciation.
Huangqi (Astragali Membranacei Radix), Renshen (Ginseng Radix - remove if coughing), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), each 1 qian; Zhigancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma - honey-fried) 5 fen; Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), each 7 fen; Shengma ( Cimicifugae Rhizoma), Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix), each 3 fen.
Take as one dose, decoct with water, and take slightly warm well after meals. (Physical labor injures Qi externally; mental labor injures Qi internally; irregular diet injures Middle Qi. Injury leads to decline in grain essence, disease of the Post-Heaven foundation, and lack of nourishment for the Upper and Lower Jiao. Therefore, sweet-warm agents are used to tonify Upper and Middle Qi, cleverly lifting Ying Qi to raise sunken Yang, harmonizing Ying and Wei so Qi naturally recovers. When Qi recovers, what disease remains? Mr. Dongyuan's life work relies entirely on this. Its modifications are even more subtle; see details.)
Bazhen Tang (Eight Treasures Decoction): Treats Spleen and Stomach damage with simultaneous injury to Qi and Blood. Human life depends primarily on the Spleen and Stomach; once they are deficient, the Five Zang Organs lose their support, and hundred diseases arise. It is Sizijunzi Tang combined with Siwu Tang, decocted with ginger and jujube.
Guipi Tang (Restore the Spleen Decoction): Treats bleeding from the Spleen meridian, insomnia, fever, night sweats; or Spleen injury from overthinking, failing to control Blood leading to hemorrhage; or forgetfulness, palpitations, fright; or Heart-Spleen pain, lethargy, desire to lie down, and loss of appetite.
See Blood Flooding Section (Labor Injury Clause).
Huangqi San (Astragalus Powder): Treats body pain and fatigue after eating due to laborious Qi, and night sweats. This is due to Ying and Wei damage from blood loss.
Huangqi (Astragali Membranacei Radix) 1 liang; Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Baishao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), Ganyedi (Rehmanniae Radix), each 7.5 qian; Zhigancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma - honey-fried) 0.5 liang.
Take 5 qian per dose, add 3 slices of ginger and one jujube, decoct with water, and take warm before meals. (Kidney fluid entering the Heart becomes sweat, and sweat is the manifestation of Yang Qi. Yang Qi is Wei Qi. During the day, Wei Qi travels through Yang levels, becoming Qi and sweat; at night, it travels through Yin levels, becoming fluid and Blood. Night sweats occur when the Qi traveling in Yin secretly escapes outward to travel in Yang. This prescription uses Huangqi to tonify Yang Qi and secure the exterior, Fangfeng as a guide, Danggui, Baishao, and Dihuang to guide Qi medicines back to Yin, and Gancao to harmonize Ying and Wei in the center, thus curing all symptoms.)
Jiegeng Yinzi (Platycodon Guide Potion): Treats Heart Qi deficiency, relieves fatigue, and benefits Blood.
Huangqi (Astragali Membranacei Radix), Renshen (Ginseng Radix), Maidong (Ophiopogonis Radix - heart removed), Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix), Zhigancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma - honey-fried), each 1 liang; Qingpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Viride) 0.5 liang.
Make into a powder. Take 3 qian per dose, decoct with one cup of water until reduced to 70%, and take warm. (Jiegeng Yin treats Qi deficiency, so Renshen, Huangqi, and Gancao are the Sovereign herbs. Maidong is added to unblock the Heart and clear Fire. Jiegeng carries the other herbs to tonify Upper Jiao Qi. Qingpi promotes Diaphragm Qi to prevent congestion from the other herbs. This reflects that Blood is born from Qi.)
Jie Lao San (Robbing Labor Powder): Treats dual deficiency of Heart and Kidney, labor-induced coughing (two or three sounds, no phlegm), nighttime fever followed by cold, occasional night sweats, limb fatigue, sallow and thin complexion, decreased appetite, vague sleep at night, unsettled Spirit, and vivid dreams. This medicine treats slight cough with saliva containing red threads, known as Fei Wei (Lung Atrophy). If untreated, it becomes a debilitating disease.
Baishaoyao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) 6 liang; Honey-fried Huangqi (Astragali Membranacei Radix) 4 liang; Renshen (Ginseng Radix - rhizome removed), Baifuling (Poria), Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma - boiled seven times), Zhigancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma - honey-fried), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix - rhizome removed, wine-washed), Wuweizi (Schisandrae Chinensis Fructus), Ejiao (Asini Corii Colla - stir-fried), Shudihuang (Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata - washed and dried), each 2 liang.
Chop the herbs. Take 3 qian per dose, add 7 slices of ginger and three jujubes, decoct with water, take warm, three times daily. (The human body utilizes Qi and Blood; the Five Zang Organs prioritize Heart and Kidney. Heart and Kidney are the parents of Qi and Blood. This prescription uses three items to tonify Qi, three to tonify Blood, and three to stop cough, eliminate phlegm, and astringe the Lung, which seems appropriate. However, Banxia is drying and damages Blood; why use it? Presumably, Huangqi is the Sovereign for tonifying Qi, Baishao for tonifying Blood. Adding Shudihuang and Ejiao moistens dryness, while Wuweizi and Renshen generate fluids. Thus, there is no harm from dryness. It is suitable for slight cough with saliva, but treating red threads (hemoptysis) is beyond the courage of modern practitioners. Use with discretion. Especially when combined with Renshen and Huangqi, do not use lightly.)
Bufei Tang (Tonify Lung Decoction): Treats labor-induced cough, deficiency of the Five Zang Organs, afternoon fever, spontaneous and night sweats, expectoration, and wheezing cough.
Renshen (Ginseng Radix), Fried Huangqi (Astragali Membranacei Radix), Ziwan (Asternatis Radix), Fried Wuweizi (Schisandrae Chinensis Fructus), each 5 fen; Shudihuang (Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata), Fried Sangbaipi (Morus Cortex Radicis), each 1 qian.
Cut into pieces, decoct with water, add a little honey, and take after meals. (Some say人参 and Huangqi are contraindicated for cough, and Shudihuang for phlegm. Using them all here indicates ignorance.)
Bufang Wan (Tonifying Pill): Treats various deficiency diseases in women.
Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Shudihuang (Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata), each 1 liang; Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Fried Baishaoyao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Huangqi (Astragali Membranacei Radix), Renshen (Ginseng Radix), Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), each 0.5 liang.
Make into fine powder, refine honey into pills the size of paulownia seeds. Take 50-70 pills per dose, wash down with warm water. (This follows the principle of Bazhen Tang. The choice to include or exclude Chenpi and Fuling should be considered.)
Renshen Wan (Ginseng Pill): Nourishes Yin, generates Blood, and tonifies deficiency.
Renshen (Ginseng Radix), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Fried Lujiaojiao (Cervi Cornu Colla), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix), Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Shudihuang (Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata), all in equal parts.
Make into fine powder, refine honey into pills the size of paulownia seeds. Take 30 pills per dose, wash down with rice drink on an empty stomach. (This also follows the principle of Bazhen Tang. Made into pills, Gancao is removed. Due to its diuretic nature, Fuling is removed. The use of Lujiaojiao is likely because it belongs to the category of Qi and Blood, tonifying the Du Mai and filling the brain marrow.)
Qibu Wan (Seven Tonics Pill): Treats women with weak Qi and Blood, disharmony of Chong and Ren meridians, abdominal knots resembling pregnancy, yet menstruation has not arrived and meridians are undifferentiated. This prescription is suitable.
Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix), each 3 qian; Shudihuang (Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Baizhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix), Fried Ejiao (Asini Corii Colla), each 2 fen.
Make into fine powder, refine honey into pills the size of paulownia seeds. Take 50-60 pills per dose, wash down with rice drink on an empty stomach. (Siwu Tang and Ejiao tonify Ren Mai deficiency; Baizhu and Baizhi regulate Chong Mai Qi. Because the menstrual knot resembles pregnancy and meridians are undifferentiated, the formula is constructed thus.)
Shibu Wan (Ten Tonics Pill): Treats all deficiencies and damages in women, disharmony of Ying and Wei, emaciation, sallow face, back fatigue, bitter taste, dry tongue, palpitations, excessive sweating, Blood deficiency with excess Qi, alternating chills and fever, all types of metrorrhagia and leukorrhea, miscarriage, and abortion. This medicine treats all these conditions. Pregnant women taking it have miraculous effects.
Shudihuang (Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata - washed, wine-soaked, steamed, dried, weighed) 4 liang; Roushoucong (Cynomorii Folii - wine-soaked, dried); Renshen (Ginseng Radix), Huangqi (Astragali Membranacei Radix - rhizome removed, honey-fried); Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix - wine-soaked), Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Baishaoyao (Paeoniae Radix Alba - washed), Baifuling (Poria), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma - rhizome removed, stir-fried), each 2 liang; Rougui (Cinnamomi Cortex - bark removed) 1 liang; Zhigancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma - honey-fried) 0.5 liang.
Make into fine powder, use good wine to mix with Yam powder paste to form pills the size of paulownia seeds. Take 60-70 pills per dose, wash down with rice soup or warm wine before meals. (This is Shiquan Dabu Tang plus Roushoucong. Materia Medica states Roushoucong is the Black Life Master, treating male impotence and female infertility. Hence it is added. Few pill formulas use Gancao, but this one does. Instead of honey, it uses wine-mixed Yam paste to ensure the pills do not act too slowly, achieving tenfold efficacy.)
Ziyin Baibu Bu Wan (Nourishing Yin Hundred Tonics Pill): Treats women with labor-injured Qi and Blood, all deficiencies and damages, five labors and seven injuries, Yin-Yang disharmony, alternating chills and fever, Heart/abdominal pain, loss of appetite, emaciation, and fatigue.
Xiangfu (Cyperi Rhizoma) 1 jin (soaked in wine, vinegar, salt water, and child's urine, 4 liang each, dried); Yimucao (Leonuri Herba) 0.5 jin; Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix - wine-washed) 6 liang; Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Shudihuang (Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata - ginger juice stir-fried), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), each 4 liang; Fried Baishaoyao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) 3 liang; Fried Yanhusuo (Corydalis Rhizoma), Renshen (Ginseng Radix), Baifuling (Poria), each 2 liang; Zhigancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma - honey-fried) 1 liang.
Make into fine powder, refine honey into pills the size of paulownia seeds. Take 50-60 pills per dose, wash down with Sandaren (Amomi Fructus Rotundus) soup, wine, vinegar soup, or plain boiling water, on an empty stomach. (This prescription not only regulates Qi and tonifies deficiency but also excels at regulating menstruation and promoting conception. Although it contains Gancao and is honey-pilled, since Xiangfu and Yimucao are Sovereign, it avoids the slowing effect of sweet pills.)
Yangru Wan (Sheep Milk Pill): Treats deficiency-labor and emaciation.
Honey-fried Huangqi (Astragali Membranacei Radix), Wine-soaked and steamed Dihuang (Rehmanniae Radix), Qinjiao (Gentianae Macrophyllae Radix), Shanzhuyu (Corni Fructus), Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix), Digupi (Lycii Cortex), in equal parts.
Make into fine powder, refine honey into pills the size of paulownia seeds. Take 50 pills per dose, wash down with Ginseng decoction, anytime, once daily. (This prescription uses Huangqi to tonify Upper Jiao Yuan Qi, paired with Digupi's bitter-cold to tonify Qi without heating. Shudihuang tonifies Lower Jiao Water, paired with Shanzhuyu's warm-astringent to tonify Water and generate Liver Wood. Chaihu dissipates constrained heat Qi; Qinjiao facilitates whole-body mechanism. Named Sheep Milk because Renshen and Huangqi share the merit of mutton.)
Liuyi Wan (Six Ingredients Pill) (Also known as Dihuang Wan or Shenqi Wan): Treats Kidney Meridian deficiency, fever with thirst, dysuria, Qi stagnation with phlegm-cough, vertigo, blurred vision, deafness, dry throat, tongue pain, loose teeth, weak waist and legs, spontaneous and night sweats, hematochezia and other bleeding, aphonia, water overflowing as phlegm, and fever due to Blood deficiency. Its merits cannot be fully described.
Shudihuang (Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata - pounded into paste) 8 liang; Shanzhuyu (Corni Fructus), Dry Shanyao (Dioscoreae Rhizoma), each 4 liang; Mudanpi (Moutan Cortex), Baifuling (Poria), Zexie (Alismatis Rhizoma), each 3 liang.
Each herb is made into powder separately, mixed with Dihuang paste, refined honey added, and formed into pills the size of paulownia seeds. Take 70-80 pills per dose, wash down with boiling water on an empty stomach before meals.
Bawei Wan (Eight Ingredients Pill): Treats Mingmen Fire decline failing to generate Earth, leading to Spleen-Stomach weakness, poor appetite, loose stools, umbilical/abdominal pain, and frequent nocturia.
It is Liuyi Wan plus Rougui (Cinnamomi Cortex) and Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata), each 1 liang. (Originally named Shenqi Wan because the Kidney contains generating Qi. Kidney corresponds to Kan trigram, same as Mingmen. Mingmen Qi should be stored, not leaked, hence called "stingy organ" as it stores essence from Five Zang and Six Fu. This formula uses Dihuang to nourish Kidney Yin, Shanzhuyu, Shanyao, Fuling, Zexie to tonify Qi of Four Zang, descending back to Kidney. Mudanpi clears latent Fire in Yin. With Fire gone, Qi generates and Essence grows, so Four Zang have granaries and generation is endless. Named Shenqi, is it meaningless? Bawei Wan warms generating Qi within Yin to tonify Fire and generate Earth, suitable for lower origin deficiency with abdominal pain and frequent urination.)
Yiyin Shenqi Wan (Nourishing Yin Kidney Qi Pill): Treats deficiency of all Zang organs, fever, afternoon fever, tidal fever, night sweats, alternating chills and fever, five-palm heat, dry mouth/thirst, irregular menstruation, soreness/weakness of bones/tendons, poor appetite, unclear head/eyes, Phlegm-Qi obstruction, worsening cough in afternoon, chest oppression, red/frequent urination, hot/painful feet, weak legs, body pain. This is a formula to strengthen the Master of Water to control Solar Flare.
Shudihuang (Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata - pounded into paste) 8 liang; Shanzhuyu (Corni Fructus), Shanyao (Dioscoreae Rhizoma), each 4 liang; Baifuling (Poria), Mudanpi (Moutan Cortex), Zexie (Alismatis Rhizoma), each 3 liang; Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Fried Wuweizi (Schisandrae Chinensis Fructus), each 2 liang; Shengdihuang (Rehmanniae Radix - wine-soaked, pounded into paste).
Make into powder, add the two pastes, refined honey, form pills the size of paulownia seeds, coat with Cinnabar. Take 50 pills per dose, wash down with light salt water on an empty stomach. (Note: Shenqi Wan was established by Zhang Zhongjing, focusing on guiding Qi back to the root, hence the name. Adding "Nourishing Yin" is superfluous and contradicts the original intent. Wuweizi can astringe Qi and generate fluids; Shengdihuang can cool Blood and drain Fire. Used sparingly, it might be reasonable. However, the use of Danggui is flawed! Some say Danggui's pungency moistens Kidney dryness, but pungent-warm substances are circulating, not suitable for guiding Qi. Kidney is a Water organ generating Yin ("deep water, thick soil"). Movement scatters Qi and overflows Water, losing its storing function. Observing water flourishing in winter but drying up, or flowing in summer when Fire is strong, clarifies the naming meaning. Should pungent-warm substances be added to a Qi-guiding pill? Consider carefully.)
Wuji Jian Wan (Black Chicken Decoction Pill): Treats hundred diseases in women, Blood-Qi deficiency-labor, red and white leukorrhea.
Huangqi (Astragali Membranacei Radix), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), each 6 liang; Xiangfu (Cyperi Rhizoma) 4 liang; Baifuling (Poria) 3 liang; Renshen (Ginseng Radix), Guanzi Gui (Cinnamomi Cortex), Shudihuang (Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata), Shengdihuang (Rehmanniae Radix), Digupi (Lycii Cortex), each 2 liang.
Take one black-boned white-feathered chicken. Males use female, females use male. Cage it. Make balls of Huangqi powder mixed with warm dough, size of chicken head, feed to chicken until eyes produce discharge. Hang to die. Remove entrails and feathers, wash, crush bones. Add the above herbs into the chicken belly. Cook overnight in one bottle of wine and one bottle of vinegar. Take bones, bake dry, grind to powder. Use the cooking liquid to make paste pills the size of paulownia seeds. Take 50 pills per dose, wash down with salt water. (Chicken corresponds to Xun Wood. Black bone, white feathers represent Metal-Water mutual generation. Wood without Fire dryness is suitable for women, as Liver Wood functions through Yin generating Yang. However, although this prescription focuses on Qi and Blood, combining Renshen, Huangqi, and Guanzi Gui is overly warming-tonifying. It should only be used for Blood deficiency and Qi weakness.)
Renshen Biejia Wan (Ginseng Softshell Turtle Pill): Treats all deficiency diseases in women, emaciated muscles, night sweats, palpitations, cough with rebellious Qi, irregular menstruation, alternating chills and fever, loss of appetite.
Renshen (Ginseng Radix), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Chishaoyao (Paeoniae Radix Rubra), Xingren (Armeniacae Semen Amarum - soaked in water, peel and tip removed, stir-fried), Zhigancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma - honey-fried), Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix - rhizome removed), Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix), each 1 liang; Digupi (Lycii Cortex), Xuanhuanglian (Scutellariae Radix), Huhuanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma), each 7.5 qian; Rougui (Cinnamomi Cortex - rough bark removed), Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix), each 0.5 liang; Shexiang (Moschus - ground separately) 5 fen; Biejia (Testudinis Carapax et Plastrum - one weighing 2 liang, vinegar-fried to yellow).
Make into fine powder. Use 1 jin Qinghao (Artemisiae Annuae Herba), pound and squeeze juice. Combine with 5 sheng child's urine and 5 sheng wine, boil down to 2 sheng. Add 3 liang real Su (Butyrum) and 3 liang Baisha Mi (Saccharum), boil again into paste, cool, then add herb powders, mix evenly, form pills the size of paulownia seeds. Take 50 pills per dose, wash down with warm wine anytime. (This prescription treats deficiency due to Qi and Blood insufficiency, using Renshen and Danggui. Insufficiency leads to dry fluids and emaciated muscles, so Su and Mi are used to moisten. Su and Mi, along with Xingren, Gancao, and Jiegeng, also moisten the Lung, direct Qi downward, and relieve cough. Qi deficiency causes cold and palpitations; Blood deficiency causes heat and night sweats. Thus, within Qi-Blood tonification, Chaihu, Digupi, and Huanglian are added to clear heat, while Rougui and Muxiang warm cold. Chishaoyao disperses Blood stasis; Xingren breaks Qi stagnation. Huhuanglian, Biejia, Qinghao, and child's urine search out bone-steaming heat. Shexiang acts as a guide to connect interior/exterior and scatter constrained heat. How can there be insufficiency?)
Ai Jian Wan (Mugwort Decoction Pill): Treats all deficiencies in women.
Du Aiye (Artemisiae Argyi Folium), Da Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), each 2 liang; Xiangfu (Cyperi Rhizoma) 4 liang.
