Jiawei Siwu Tang (Modified Four Substances Decoction) treats bone-steaming consumption in women.
Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis), Baishao Yao (Fried Radix Paeoniae Alba), Chuanxiong (Rhizoma Chuanxiong), Shengdi (Radix Rehmanniae Preparata), Digupi (Cortex Lycii), Mudanpi (Cortex Moutan) (all in equal proportions).
The above herbs are chopped. Take six qian per dose, decoct with water, and take orally. Another prescription adds Baizhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae). (This formula uses Siwu Tang to nourish the Yin of the Heart, Liver, Spleen, and Kidney; Digupi and Mudanpi clear the heat of bone-steaming. The reason for adding Baizhu is that Earth is the mother of all things; this is the general idea.)
Huanglian San (Coptis Powder) treats bone-steaming consumption-heat in women, characterized by heavy and lethargic limbs, pain in the back and shoulders, sallow complexion, and progressive weakness.
Huanglian (Radix Coptidis, remove roots), Zhimu (Rhizoma Anemarrhenae) (each 1 liang), Biejia (Testudinis Carapax et Plastrum, vinegar-fried, 2 liang), Chaihu (Radix Bupleuri), Mutong (Herba Akebiae Trifolatae) (each 1.5 liang), Maimendong (Radix Ophiopogonis, remove heart), Baizhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae), Digupi (Cortex Lycii), Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae), Xijiao Xie (Hornis Rhinocerotis, sliced) (each 7.5 qian), Longdancao (Radix Gentianae, remove rhizome), Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae, roasted until slightly red, each 0.5 liang).
Grind into a coarse powder. Take four qian per dose, with one zhongzhan (unit of volume) of water, 1 qian of Shengjiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens), and fourteen leaves of Danzhuyez (Ramulus et Folium Bambusae in Taeniis). Decoct until reduced to 60% of the original volume, strain, and take warm at any time. (The residual Qi of the Kidney condenses to form bones. If Heart Fire scorches upwards for a long time, it results in steaming heat. This formula uses Huanglian, Mutong, Xijiao, and Maimendong to guide Heart Heat downward; Chaihu, Biejia, and Digupi clear Bone Heat; Zhimu and Huangqin rescue the Mother of the Kidney (Lung Metal); Longdancao drains Heart Fire; Zhimu, Baizhu, and Gancao harmonize the various herbs to protect the Spleen. In this way, excessive Zhuohuo (Blazing Fire) is removed, and Shaohuo (Lesser Fire) is generated; Kidney Water becomes prosperous daily, and bone-steaming dissipates. How could there be consumption-heat?)
Qinghao San (Artemisia Powder) treats bone-steaming consumption-heat in women, characterized by vexatious pain in the limbs and progressive emaciation.
Qinghao (Herba Artemisiae Annuae), Biejia (Testudinis Carapax et Plastrum, vinegar-fried, each 2 liang), Chaihu (Radix Bupleuri, 1.5 liang), Huanglian (Radix Coptidis, remove roots), Huangbo (Cortex Phellodendri), Sangbaipi (Cortex Mori), Baizhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae) (each 1 liang), Zhizi Ren (Semen Gossypii Herbacei preparations? Note: Zhizi is Fructus Gardeniae, here likely refers to Fructus Gardeniae prepared seeds/pulp), Zhimu (Rhizoma Anemarrhenae) (each 7.5 qian), Digupi (Cortex Lycii), Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae, roasted, each 0.5 liang), Longdancao (Radix Gentianae, 2.5 qian).
Grind into a coarse powder. Take four qian per dose, with one zhongzhan of water and 1.3 qian of Shengjiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens). Decoct until reduced to 60%, strain, and take warm. (The previous formula contained Huangqin, Mutong, Xijiao, and Maimendong; this formula contains Huangbo, Qinghao, Sangbaipi, and Zhizi. Why? Zhizi, Huanglian, and Longdanqing clear the heat of Water and Fire; Sangbaipi, Digupi, and Zhimu drain Lung Metal Heat; Chaihu, Biejia, and Qinghao resolve bone-steaming consumption-heat. However, draining Lung Qi damages the Upper Jiao, and removing Fire deprives Earth of its source. Therefore, Huangbo, Baizhu, and Gancao are used to provide sustenance like grain from the Juqiao granary, protecting the fragile body amidst turmoil.)
Chaihu San (Bupleurum Powder) treats bone-steaming consumption-heat in women accompanied by cough, phlegm obstruction in the chest and diaphragm, abdominal and hypochondriac fullness and oppression, and loss of appetite.
Chaihu (Radix Bupleuri), Sangbaipi (Cortex Mori), Maimendong (Radix Ophiopogonis, remove heart), Chi Fuling (Poria with Red Wood, each 1 liang), Chuan Dahuang (Radix et Rhizoma Rhei, crushed, lightly fried), Zhike (Fructus Aurantii, remove pith, bran-fried), Baihe (Bulbus Lilii), Qinjiao (Radix Gentianae Macrophyllae), Ziwan (Herba Asteris Tatarici, washed), Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae), Chi Shaoyao (Radix Paeoniae Rubra), Zhimu (Rhizoma Anemarrhenae), Mutong (Herba Akebiae Trifolatae) (each 7.5 qian), Banxia (Rhizoma Pinelliae, washed seven times in hot water to remove slipperiness), Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae, roasted, each 0.5 liang), Biejia (Testudinis Carapax et Plastrum, vinegar-fried, 2 liang).
Grind into a coarse powder. Take three qian per dose, with one zhongzhan of water and 1.3 qian of fresh Shengjiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens). Decoct until reduced to 60%, strain, and take warm at any time. (This formula focuses on treating cough and phlegm obstruction, and abdominal/hypochondriac fullness, hence the use of Dahuang and Banxia. However, Dahuang and Banxia are rejected by modern practitioners. Does ancient medicine surpass modern medicine? Those who master their use will understand naturally. Alas! Reading ancient formulas, I have deep reflections on the diseases of today's physicians.)
Heche Wan (Placenta Pill) treats laborious cough and all types of consumption, deficiency-steaming, and related disorders.
Ziheche (Human Placenta, one piece; male fetus at birth is best. Wash clean of blood in flowing water, place in a porcelain vessel, steam until extremely soft, use the juice in the medicine), Ren Shen (Radix Ginseng, selected, 1 liang), Bai Fuling (Poria, snow-white variety, 0.5 liang), Gan Shanyao (Rhizoma Dioscoreae, dried, 2 liang).
Grind into a fine powder. Add Heche juice and wheat paste to form pills, sized like paulownia seeds. Coat with a small amount of Moshiang (Musk). Take 30-50 pills per dose, swallowed with rice drink, warm wine, or salted soup, on an empty stomach. For severe cough, swallow with Wuweizi (Fructus Schisandrae) decoction.
Huangqi Wan (Astragalus Pill) treats bone-steaming vexatious heat in women, emaciated and painful limbs, dry mouth, mental restlessness, and insomnia.
Huangqi (Radix Astragali), Maimendong (Radix Ophiopogonis, remove heart), Fushen (Poria with Pine Root, remove wood), Bei Chaihu (Radix Bupleuri), Sheng Dihuang (Radix Rehmanniae), Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae) (each 1 liang), Suanzaoren (Semen Ziziphi Spinosae, fried), Yuliren (Semen Pruni Armeniacae), Gouqizi (Fructus Lycii), Xingren (Semen Pruni Armeniacae, skin and tip removed, bran-fried until yellow), Ren Shen (Radix Ginseng, remove rhizome), Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae) (each 7.5 qian), Baihe (Bulbus Lilii), Zhike (Fructus Aurantii, remove pith, bran-fried), Chi Shaoyao (Radix Paeoniae Rubra), Zhimu (Rhizoma Anemarrhenae), Qinjiao (Radix Gentianae Macrophyllae) (each 0.5 liang), Biejia (Testudinis Carapax et Plastrum, processed, 2 liang).
Grind into a fine powder. Form pills with refined honey, sized like paulownia seeds. Swallow 30 pills with clear congee broth at any time. (This formula primarily tonifies Qi and essence, nourishes Blood and calms the Spirit, clears Lung Heat, resolves consumption-heat, and opens the chest and diaphragm. Although Yuliren and Xingren can moisten dryness, they are not suitable for those with loose stools.)
Dihuang Jian Wan (Rehmannia Decoction Pill) resolves consumption, promotes muscle growth, stimulates appetite, invigorates Blood, and nourishes the Heart.
Sheng Dihuang Zhi (Juice of Radix Rehmanniae), Xingren Zhi (Juice of Semen Pruni Armeniacae), Shengjiang Zhi (Juice of Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens), Ou Zhi (Juice of Rhizoma Nelumbinis), Bohe Zhi (Juice of Herba Menthae), E Li Zhi (Juice of Pyri Communis) (each 5 sheng for the first four, 1 sheng for the latter two), Fa Jiu (Prepared Wine, 2 sheng), Sha Mi (Sand Honey, 4 sheng).
Combine all juices and slowly simmer into a paste. Add the following herbs:
Bei Chaihu (Radix Bupleuri, 3 liang), Muxiang (Radix Aucklandiae), Ren Shen (Radix Ginseng), Fuling (Poria), Baiziren (Semen Platycladi, remove skin and tip, grind), Shanyao (Rhizoma Dioscoreae), Yuanzhi Rou (Medullus Polygalae), Zhishi (Fructus Aurantii Immaturus, bran-fried), Baizhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae) (each 1 liang), Qinjiao (Radix Gentianae Macrophyllae), Kujie/Ganjie (Radix Platycodonis, each 2 liang), Moshiang (Musk, 0.5 liang, grind), Shu Dihuang (Radix Rehmanniae Preparata, washed, dried, steamed with wine, 4 liang).
Grind into a fine powder. Mix with the aforementioned paste to form pills, sized like paulownia seeds. Take 20-30 pills after meals with Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae) decoction. (Note: In formulas for bone-steaming, Chaihu and Biejia are invariably used. This formula uses various juices to make a paste, focusing on moistening the Lung, clearing heat, and resolving phlegm. However, fearing it may obstruct the diaphragm and damage the Spleen, it is assisted by Ren Shen, Baizhu, Shanyao, Fuling, and Moshiang to unblock and open the Middle Jiao Qi. Baiziren and Yuanzhi further nourish the Mother of the Spleen (Fire) and moisten the Heart. For those with dry, rough skin and dual deficiency of Qi and Blood, please try this. What do you think?)
