A pregnant woman, approaching her due date, suddenly lost vision in both eyes, unable to see even lamps or torches. She suffered from headache, dizziness, and swelling of the neck and cheeks, rendering her unable to turn her head. Various treatments failed to alleviate the condition; instead, it worsened to a critical state. Coincidentally, after taking Xiao Feng San (Eliminate Wind Powder), her symptoms decreased by seventy percent, allowing her to deliver safely. However, her eyelids were retracted upward, and she could not recognize people. Consequently, Si Wu Tang (Four Substances Decoction) was modified with Jing Jie (Schizonepetae Herba) and Fang Feng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), and concurrently with Tian Men Dong Yin Zi (Asparagus Root Drink), an ophthalmic formula. The two formulas were administered alternately, and her vision gradually improved slightly. (Eye diseases are mostly caused by Fire pathogen, while during pregnancy, fetal heat is predominant; thus, cooling and dispersing agents achieved efficacy.) Strict dietary restrictions included alcohol, wheat products, fried and roasted foods, as well as chicken, mutton, goose, duck, tofu, spicy and hot-natured foods, along with abstinence from sexual intercourse. This syndrome resulted from residing in warm environments during pregnancy, wearing overly warm clothing, leading to latent heat accumulation internally, or excessive consumption of alcohol, wheat products, and roasted foods, thereby inducing fetal heat.
Tian Men Dong Yin Zi: Treats upper assault of Wind-Heat in the Liver Meridian during pregnancy, causing eyelid retraction and blindness.
Ingredients: Tian Men Dong (Asparagi Radix, heart removed), Zhi Mu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma), Chong Wei Zi (Leonuri Fructus), Wu Wei Zi (Schisandrae Chinensis Fructus), Fang Feng (Saposhnikoviae Radix, radix removed), Fu Ling (Poria, peel removed), Chuan Qiang Huo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix, radix removed), Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) — each 1 qian.
Usage: These ingredients constitute one dose. Add 2 zhong of water and 3 slices of Sheng Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens). Decoct until 1 zhong remains. Take after meals.
Zhang Zhongjing stated: "Women suffering from Zang Zao (Visceral Dryness) experience sorrowful weeping, appearing as if possessed by spirits, with frequent yawning and stretching. Gan Mai Da Zao Tang (Licorice, Wheat, and Jujube Decoction) is the primary treatment." (Zang Zao is due to dryness of Lung Metal. The emotion associated with the Lung is grief. Fetal heat causes Fire to flare upward, preventing the Lung from maintaining its balance, hence the spontaneous weeping. Treatment employs sweet and缓和 [soothing] methods, assisted by cooling and purging methods, ensuring recovery.)
Xu Xueshi said: "In my hometown, there was a woman who wept incessantly without cause. Some suggested she was afflicted by evil spirits, and various prayers and exorcisms were performed, but to no avail. I suddenly recalled a syndrome from *Jin Gui Yao Lue*: 'Women with Zang Zao, sorrowful weeping, appearing spirit-possessed, with frequent yawning and stretching, should be treated with Gan Mai Da Zao Tang.' I urgently ordered the preparation of the medicine. After completing one course, she recovered. The ancients' understanding of diseases and formulation of prescriptions were truly exquisite."
Xue Shi noted: "The aforementioned syndrome may be caused by Cold-Water attacking the Heart or Wind-Evil in the Lung. Treatment requires careful examination."
A pregnant woman who wept spontaneously without cause was cured after two doses of Da Zao Tang (Jujube Decoction). Upon recurrence, the same formula was used again, supplemented with Si Jun Zi Tang (Four Gentlemen Decoction) plus Shan Zhi (Gardeniae Fructus), resulting in stabilization.
Another pregnant woman suffered from sorrow and irritability. When questioned by her husband, she replied that she had no specific reason but simply felt like crying. Dan Zhu Ru Tang (Bamboo Shavings Decoction) was used as the main formula, supplemented with Ba Zhen Tang (Eight Treasures Decoction), leading to stabilization.
Gan Mai Da Zao Tang: Treats women's Zang Zao with incessant sorrowful weeping. (Sorrow is a disease of the Lung. This formula tonifies the Spleen, following the principle of 'tonifying the mother.' Furthermore, Sweet flavor generates Dampness; once Dampness is generated, Dryness is resolved.)
Ingredients: Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 3 liang), Xiao Mai (Tritici Semen, 1 sheng), Da Zao (Ziziphi Jujubae Fructus, 10 pieces).
Usage: Boil in 6 sheng of water to obtain 3 sheng. Divide into three warm doses. It also tonifies Spleen Qi.
Dan Zhu Ru Tang: Treats pregnant women with Heart Deficiency palpitations, Zang Zao, and incessant sorrowful weeping. It is also highly effective for treating severe Empty-Heat irritability.
Ingredients: Mai Men Dong (Ophiopogonis Tuber, heart removed), Xiao Mai (Tritici Semen), Ban Xia (Pinelliae Tuber, soaked in boiling water, each 1.5 qian), Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Bai Fu Ling (Poria, each 1 qian), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 0.5 qian).
Usage: Prepare as one dose. Add 5 slices of Sheng Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens), 1 jujube, and a ball-sized piece of Dan Zhu Ru (Bambusae Caulis in Taenia). Decoct in water and take orally.
Another prescription: Treats fetal Zang Zao, weeping, and spontaneous laughter or weeping.
Usage: Roast Hong Zao (Ziziphi Jujubae Fructus) until carbonized but retaining its nature (Cinnabar-like residue). Mix with rice water and administer.
