Cherry (Prunus pseudocerasus), with a sweet and sour taste, is slightly cold in nature. It treats all kinds of deficiency syndromes. It can greatly tonify Yuan Qi (Original Qi) and moisten the skin. Long-term consumption prolongs life and enhances longevity. Taken as wine infusion, it treats left hemiplegia and right paralysis (Zuo Tan You Huan), numbness of the four limbs, and wind-damp pain in the waist and legs. Decoction of its leaves treats hematemesis (vomiting blood). The stem, burnt to ash and powdered, taken with burning wine, treats cold pain, stomach Qi pain, and nine types of Qi pain.

Cherry, with a sweet and delicious taste, is hot in nature and non-toxic. Applying its leaves externally to sores is most effective. Its main indications include harmonizing the Spleen and Stomach, beautifying the complexion, and stopping diarrhea and dysentery caused by undigested food and water. Excessive consumption causes vomiting, triggers hidden wind, stirs up damp-heat, and damages sinews and bones. Those with cold-fire stagnation and heat, or suffering from wheezing, coughing, and febrile diseases, should not eat it; doing so will severely aggravate the condition. Children should not eat too much, as excessive intake generates heat and induces Gan Ji (infantile malnutrition). This is because children are bodies of pure Yang, and ingestion immediately produces heat syndromes. However, for cases where the smallpox/rash is white in color and the apex is depressed without rising fluid, the pit powdered and applied externally can help raise the fluid and promote growth. If it is a Yang syndrome, it is contraindicated. It is also said: The pit benefits smallpox/rash, because the root can raise Yang and dissipate fire.
