The above five-colored mushrooms are mostly unrecognized by people, who often fail to distinguish them carefully, mistaking toxic mushrooms for harmless ones, leading to fatal poisoning, which is deeply pitiable. Now, they are specifically distinguished and explained in detail so that people know how to select and gather them. For any unidentified ones, it is advisable to boil them with ginger rice or silver/gold utensils; if black color appears, they must absolutely not be eaten. Additionally, there is a type called Fanchang Jun, whose shape is indistinguishable from Jian Shou Qing (Blue-staining Mushroom). When picked and broken open, it also turns blue-black upon contact, but its taste is bitter and numbing. If mistakenly eaten, abdominal pain will definitely occur. Detoxification should also be preceded by identification using ginger rice and silver/gold utensils to avoid errors. Since mushroom species are numerous, they cannot all be described. Besides the five edible colors, there are mushrooms contrary to yellow, green, white, black, and red, which are inedible. It is said that "contrary" refers to those like green-faced and white-backed ones; the rest can be inferred up to twenty-three types, each with different natures, which are also separately stated for reference during collection.
Bi Jun, shape is short. Toxic.
Kunmu Jun, slightly sweet, nature is malicious.
Li Jun, bitter, cold. Eating too much causes goiter and Qi stagnation.
Sanghua Jun, taste is sweet and delicious. Rare for humans to eat; those who eat it become strong and live long.
Baimu Jun, bitter, cold. Slightly toxic.
Kuzhu Jun, highly toxic.
Feng Jun, cold, astringent. Toxic.
Ma Jun, bitter, cold. Causes sores in humans after consumption.
Liu Jun, disperses blood.
Renmian Jun, resembles chicken. Highly toxic. Fatal if eaten.
Fanchang Jun, highly toxic.
Fucao Jun, toxic.
Matiji Jun, shape resembles horse hoof, taste bitter and astringent.
Yanzhi Jun, can be used as external medicine.
Laitou Jun, taste pungent. Causes hair to turn gray.
Fanhua Jun, back black, face red. Mistaken eating damages teeth and causes hair loss.
In summary, mushrooms of the five colors—green, yellow, red, white, and black—are edible. Outside these five, their colors must necessarily be mixed/variegated; one must carefully examine every type before adoption. Even a slight error may cost a life; utmost caution is required!
