[Li Shizhen said] In prescriptions, they may be processed by calcination, burning, frying with butter, frying with vinegar, or frying with children's urine; or fried in oil, stir-fried with soil, or stir-fried with clam powder. One should follow the specific prescription, and there is no use of raw material. The scutes from the tail are considered to have the strongest efficacy.
[Li Shizhen said] Ancient prescriptions used methods such as frying with butter or wine. Only in the Tianlinggai Pill (Heavenly Skull Cap Pill) for treating Chuan Shi Lao Zhai (a chronic consumptive infectious disease), Stone Lizard (Shexi, 石蜥) including intestines and stomach is used, fried with vinegar forty-nine times, which is a unique method.
[Anonymous] Its toxicity lies in the eyes. One must remove the eyes and the flesh and hair on the shell, tail, and abdomen. Soak it thoroughly in wine, slowly dry it by baking through two layers of paper, store it in a porcelain vessel, hang it in the east corner of the house for one night before use, which can increase its efficacy tenfold. Do not damage the tail. [Ri Hua said] When using Green-haired Turtle (Lumao Gui, 绿毛龟), remove the head and feet, and wash away the dirt within the scales and bristles.
[Anonymous] When using Snake Slough (Shetui, 蛇蜕), do not use those that are green, yellow, or grayish-blue; only use those that are white like silver. First, dig a pit in the ground one chi and two cun deep, place the slough inside, leave it overnight, take it out, soak in vinegar, and fry until dry for use. [Li Shizhen said] Nowadays, people clean snake slough first with soap pod water, wrap it around bamboo, and then either use wine or...
[Su Song said] The head and tail, each about one chi long, contain severe toxicity and should not be used. Only use the dried middle section. Soak in wine, remove skin and bones, and process by frying before storage to eliminate toxicity. Not fried, head and tail... charcoal fire...
[Tao Hongjing said] Fry until yellow for use. [Anonymous] When using Shark Bone (Shayu Gu, 鲨鱼骨), do not use bone made of sand, as the shape is very similar. However, those with longitudinal grain are genuine, while those with transverse grain are fake. Soak in saline water, boil for one fu shi (approx. 2 hours), then drain. Dig a pit, heat it red-hot, place the fish bone inside, leave overnight, then take out for medicinal use, which doubles its efficacy.
Saw off the four edges of the Tortoise Shell (Guijia, 龟甲), grind it clean on a stone, process by firing with ash, coat with butter, and fry until yellow for use. Some are processed by frying with wine, vinegar, or pig lard, or burned to ash for use.
[Li Gao said] It is even better if processed by diviners. Fry with butter or wine until yellow for use.
[Li Shizhen said] This type of turtle was not used in ancient prescriptions. In recent times, it is often used in nourishing prescriptions, with effects generally similar to Tortoise Shell (Guijia, 龟甲). Liu's Xiantian Pill uses it; the method involves taking nine turtles, placing two live carp in a pot with water, covering with a rice sieve, placing the turtles on the sieve, steaming until cooked, taking out the meat, and drying it. The shells are still...
