(Store in a porcelain bottle, seal tightly, and bury in clean soil. The longer it remains buried for several years, the better its efficacy.)
(All tonifying medicines and various pastes are suitable to be decocted using this type of fire.)
(Oak charcoal fire is suitable for refining all kinds of mineral and metallic drugs; charcoal fire is suitable for boiling, decocting, baking, and roasting various pills and powders.)
(It is suitable for decocting all kinds of nourishing medicines. When taking herbal decoctions, even if the ingredients are of high quality and processed according to regulations, if the person decocting the medicine is careless or hasty, and the control of water and fire is improper with the heat intensity out of regulation, the medicine will be ineffective. Observing that the quality of tea taste and the sweetness of rice flavor both depend on the success or failure of water, fire, and cooking, one can infer this principle. Therefore, decocting medicine requires careful and experienced elderly persons. Use a deep pot, seal tightly, use fresh water and active fire, start with vigorous fire (Wu Huo) and switch to mild fire (Wen Huo), follow the standard procedures, and take as directed; there will be no case where it fails to work. For fuel, use aged reeds and dried bamboo because their fire is neither too strong nor damaging to the medicinal power.)
(The upper three chi is called feces, and the lower three chi is called earth. When using, remove the upper foul matter and do not allow external water to enter.)
(This is the earth from the east wall of the house. One should take the easternmost part of the east wall, where sunlight usually hits first, scrape it off, and use it.)
(When using, do not mistakenly use the earth under the stove. Fulonggan (Dragon Liver Earth) is formed by the accumulation of fire energy inside the stove's forehead over ten years, resembling red stone with yellow centers, and having an octagonal shape. After obtaining it, grind it finely, fly it twice with Talcum Powder (Huashi) water, dry it, wrap it in cooked silk, place it back into the old stove forehead at Zi hour (11 PM - 1 AM) for one Shichen (2 hours), then grind it again before use.)
(Raw copper has irregular shapes, greenish-yellow color like copper. When using, boil it in Licorice Root Decoction (Gancao Tang) for one Shichen. Next day, drain, spread out to dry, pound in a mortar, sieve again, soak in vinegar overnight, and use the next day. Store in a porcelain box sealed with Liuyi Mud (Six-One Clay), maintain with moderate fire for three days and nights until completely dry, cover, and extinguish the fire before use.)
(Aged and refined materials are suitable for medicinal use; fresh and coarse ones are unacceptable.)
(This is soot from the stove forehead and smoke furnace. Its texture is light and fine, hence called "Frost". Soot from mountain villages is of good quality.)
(Must remove smoky odor. Take dust brushed down from high halls and temples, sieve, and use. Another method states: when using, hang inverted dust, burn until smoke is gone, sieve the powder, and add to medicine. Lei Xiao's description seems to refer to dust from beams, which is rarely used nowadays.)
(When using, only place the whole piece within the medicine to borrow its qi to generate medicinal power; do not consume it medicinally as it can consume human fat.)
