Dongyuan's Shenxiao Huangqi Decoction (Miraculous Effect Astragalus Decoction) treats generalized numbness and insensibility, or numbness and insensibility in the head and face, hands, or legs and feet; it also treats eyes that are tight and constricted, aversion to light and sun, or weakness in vision.
Huangqi (Astragali Radix, 2 liang), Renshen (Ginseng Radix, 8 qian), Zhi Gancao (Prepared Licorice Root, 1 liang), Manjingzi (Vitex Fruit, 3 qian), Baishao (White Peony Root, 1 liang), Chenpi (Tangerine Peel, 0.5 liang).
The above herbs are cut into small pieces. Take 5 qian per dose, decoct with water, and take hot before retiring.
Gaiqi Congming Tang (Qi-Enhancing Brightening Decoction) treats internal cataracts, tinnitus, or long-standing dim vision and inability to see clearly, caused by irregular diet and physical overexertion leading to Spleen-Stomach deficiency. This medicine can improve visual field clarity; long-term use prevents internal/external cataracts and tinnitus/deafness.
Huangqi (Astragali Radix), Gancao (Licorice Root), Renshen (Ginseng Radix) (each 0.5 liang), Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma, 3 qian), Gegen (Puerariae Radix, 3 qian), Manjingzi (Vitex Fruit, 1.5 qian), Shaoyao (Peony Root), Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex, wine-fried, each 1 qian).
The above herbs are cut into small pieces. Take 3 qian per dose, decoct with water, take hot at bedtime, and take again near Wugeng (approx. 3-5 AM). Mild swelling after taking is desirable. If there is irritability or heat, gradually increase the dosage of Huangbai; add it in Spring and Summer, and double it in midsummer. If this single herb is used in excess, it will be ineffective.
Renshen Bugwei Tang (Ginseng Stomach-Nourishing Decoction) treats internal cataracts and dim vision caused by physical injury and irregular diet.
This formula is based on Shenxiao Huangqi Tang: remove Chenpi (Tangerine Peel), reduce other dosages by half, and add Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex, 1 liang, soaked thoroughly in wine).
The above herbs are cut into small pieces. Take 3-4 qian per dose, decoct with water, and take slightly hot after meals. After taking, the eyes become clear, vision becomes sharp like in childhood, and one may feel as if walking on ground without knowing height differences. This is because Yang-raising herbs are often taken in winter. Discontinue use when symptoms subside.
Note: The above belong to the Hand-Foot Taiyin and Shaoyin meridians.
Dongyuan's Lianbai Yiyin Wan (Coptis-Phellodendron Yin-Nourishing Pills)
Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), Duhuo (Angelicae Pubescentis Radix), Gancao (Licorice Root), Danggui Wei (Angelicae Sinensis Radix Tail, processed), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Wuweizi (Schisandrae Fructus) (each 0.5 liang), Shijueming (Concha Argo, calcined, 3 qian), Caojueming (Cassiae Semen), Xi Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex), Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma), Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma, wine-fried, each 1 liang).
Grind the above ingredients into a fine powder, mix with refined honey, and make pills the size of mung beans. Take 50 pills per dose, gradually increasing to 100 pills, taken after meals with clear tea. Generally, take more Buyang Tang (Yang-Supplementing Decoction) and less of these pills.
Ziyin Shenqi Wan (Yin-Nourishing Kidney-Energy Pills): This strengthens the master of Water to suppress excessive Fire (Yang).
Shudihuang (Rehmanniae Radix Preparata, 3 liang), Mudanpi (Moutan Cortex, 0.5 liang), Shengdihuang (Rehmanniae Radix, 4 liang), Zexie (Alismatis Rhizoma), Fuling (Poria, each 2.5 liang), Danggui Wei (Angelicae Sinensis Radix Tail), Shanzhuyu (Corni Fructus), Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix), Wuweizi (Schisandrae Fructus), Ganshan Yao (Dioscoreae Rhizoma, dried) (each 0.5 liang).
Pound the above ingredients in a stone mortar into a fine powder, mix with refined honey, and make pills the size of paulownia seeds. Take 50-70 pills per dose, on an empty stomach with salted water.
Note: The above all belong to the Shaoyin meridian.
