Xuanming Shuangjie Decoction treats all wind-heat and accumulated heat.
Yiyuan San (Beneficial Origin Powder), Fangfeng Tongsheng San (Saposhnikovia Universal Relief Powder) (each 1 liang).
Take 3 to 5 qian of the above herbs per dose, add scallion white, salted fermented soybeans (50 grains), and ginger slices (3 pieces), decoct, and take orally.
Note: This formula comprises herbs from the Foot-Taiyang, Foot-Yangming, Foot-Shaoyin, Foot-Jueyin, and Hand-Taiyin meridians. It is very effective for treating wind-heat and stagnant heat. However, the *Benlun* states that it treats injuries caused by internal pathogens such as wind-cold, summerheat, dampness, overeating, or fatigue, and can be used universally for various miscellaneous diseases to resolve the exterior. Yet this view conflates indications; how can cold-dampness be dispersed? How can deficiency patterns due to internal injury withstand the purgation of excess pathogens? Such an approach risks causing "deficiency making deficiency more deficient" and "excess making excess more excessive," leading to adverse outcomes. Therefore, Pan Sijing stated: This is a later variation of Zhang Zhongjing's Tiaowei Chengqi Tang. The first variation added Lianqiao (Forsythiae Fructus), Zhizi (Gardeniae Fructus), Bohe (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba), and Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), called Liangge San (Cooling the Chest Powder). Liu Hejian then made a second variation by adding Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix), Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba), Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum), Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix), Huashi (Talcum), Jingjie (Schizonepetae Spica), and Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) to Liangge San, calling it Fangfeng Tongsheng San, which is an ancient compound formula. Today, we replicate and codify its methods; learners should understand this.
Dachaihu Tang (Major Bupleurum Decoction) treats fever in shaoyin disease or miscellaneous disorders with a deep, solid, wiry, and rapid pulse, prolonged fever, or simultaneous exterior and interior syndromes with a surging pulse, headache, and delirium, or spontaneous diarrhea due to damp-heat. When both exterior and interior signs are present, this formula should be urgently administered to purge.
Chaihu (4 qian), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix) (each 1.5 qian), Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma Praeparatum cum Zingibere et Alumine) (1.2 qian), Zhishi (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus) (2 qian), Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) (2.5 qian).
Cut the herbs, add ginger and jujube, decoct, and take.
Note: This formula comprises herbs from the Foot-Shaoyang, Foot-Yangming, Foot-Taiyin, and Foot-Jueyin meridians, originating from the Taiyang pattern examples.
Jufang Renshen Baihu Tang (Bureau of Medical Welfare Formula Ginseng White Tiger Decoction) treats qi-level fever, vexation, and thirst.
Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum) (4 qian), Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma) (1.5 qian), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (1 qian), Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) (0.5 qian).
Cut the herbs, add rice (1 he), decoct, and take.
Note: This formula comprises herbs from the Foot-Yangming, Foot-Shaoyin, and Hand-Taiyin meridians.
Qingxin Lianzi Yin (Clear Heart Lotus Seed Decoction) treats fever, dry mouth, turbid urine, quietness at night, and fever during the day.
Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Maidong (Ophiopogonis Radix), Digupi (Lycii Cortex), Cheqianzi (Plantaginis Semen), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (each 3.5 qian), Lianrou (Nelumbinis Semen), Fuling (Poria), Huangqi (Astragali Radix), Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix), Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) (each 2.5 qian).
Cut the herbs, decoct with water, and take.
Note: This formula comprises herbs from the Foot-Shaoyang, Foot-Shaoyin, Hand-Taiyin, and Foot-Taiyin meridians.
Xuanming Chaihu Yinzi (Xuanming Bupleurum Infusion) resolves all muscular heat, steaming heat, accumulated heat, or residual heat after sweating, with a surging, solid, wiry, and rapid pulse.
Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma), Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix), Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix), Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) (each 2.5 qian).
Cut the herbs, add ginger, decoct, and take.
Note: This formula follows the Foot-Shaoyang pattern and acts on both the exterior/interior and blood levels. *Baojian* attached it to the qi-level heat category; we tentatively follow this, but learners should exercise discretion.
*Jiyao* states: If the skin feels hot like a burn but does not feel particularly hot to the touch, this indicates lung heat. Red eyes, vexation, or desire for drinking indicate heat in the qi level, treated solely with Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix). During the day, yang qi circulates twenty-five times; this refers to qi-level heat.
