San Yin Mugua Decoction (Three Causes Quince Decoction) treats Huoluan (cholera-like syndrome with vomiting and diarrhea), where the whole body experiences muscle spasms and twitching; if the tendons contract and pull into the abdomen, it leads to chest oppression and sudden collapse.
Dried Fructus Chaenomelis (Gan Mugua, 木瓜) (1 liang), Evodiae Fructus (Wu Zhuyu, 吴茱萸) (0.5 liang), Foeniculi Fructus (Hui Xiang, 茴香), Roasted Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Zhi Gancao, 炙甘草) (2 qian each).
The above herbs are coarsely crushed. For each dose of 4 da qian, add 3 slices of Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens (Sheng Jiang, 生姜) and 10 leaves of Perillae Folium (Zi Su Ye, 紫苏叶), decoct in water, and take orally.
Note: This formula is an example of medicines belonging to the Yangming channel. Generally speaking, muscle spasms often present with accompanying syndromes that vary; practitioners should deduce and adapt according to specific circumstances.
San Yin Weiqi Pill (Three Causes Stomach Qi Pill) treats excessive worry and overthinking causing closure and aggregation of Spleen Qi, with phlegm-fluid retention stagnating in the intestines and stomach. Qi depression in the Yin aspect condenses in the Yang aspect, leading to rebellion of Yin and Yang, resulting in alternating vomiting and diarrhea, cold extremities, dizziness of the head and eyes, or recurrent fever.
Sulfur (amount as needed, placed inside a pig’s intestine, tied at both ends, boiled in rice-washing water, wine, and child’s urine [Tong Bian, 童便] one bowl each until half evaporated, taken out, washed to remove impurities, dried, and weighed to 10 liang), Pinelliae Rhizoma Preparatum (Ban Xia, 半夏) (washed to remove slipperiness, 5 liang), Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Ren Shen, 人参), Poria (Bai Fu Ling, 白茯苓) (1 liang each), Gypsum Fibrosum (Shi Gao, 石膏).
Grind the above into powder, mix with juice of Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens (Sheng Jiang, 生姜) and steamed wheat bread (Chui Bing, 炊饼) to form pills. Take 50–100 pills per dose before empty stomach or before meals, with rice soup.
San Yin Qiqi Decoction (Three Causes Seven Qi Decoction) treats depression of the seven emotions causing dysfunction of organ qi and mutual punishment among organs, leading to rebellion of Yin and Yang, manifesting as alternating vomiting and diarrhea, alternating chills and fever, dizziness, epigastric fullness, and sensation of blockage in the throat.
Pinelliae Rhizoma Preparatum (Ban Xia, 半夏) (5 qian), Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex (Nou Pu, 浓朴/厚朴), Cinnamomi Ramulus (Gui Xin, 桂心) (3 qian each), Poria (Fu Ling, 茯苓), Paeoniae Radix Alba (Bai Shao, 白芍), Perillae Folium (Zi Su, 紫苏), Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium (Ju Pi, 橘皮) (2 qian each), Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Ren Shen, 人参) (1 qian).
The above herbs are coarsely crushed. For each dose of 4–5 qian, add Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens (Sheng Jiang, 生姜) and Jujubae Fructus (Da Zao, 大枣), decoct in water, and take orally.
Hezi San (Chebula Powder) treats cold pain of the Heart and Spleen, and Huoluan (cholera-like syndrome) with vomiting and diarrhea, with miraculous efficacy.
Terminalia Chebula Retz. Fructus (He Zi, 诃子), Roasted Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Zhi Gancao, 炙甘草), Processed Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex (Zhi Hou Po, 制厚朴), Dried Zingiberis Rhizoma (Gan Jiang, 干姜), Tsaoko Fructus (Cao Guo, 草果), Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium (Chen Pi, 陈皮), Alpiniae Katsumadai Rhizoma (Liang Jiang, 良姜), Poria (Fu Ling, 茯苓), Stir-fried Massa Medicata Fermentata (Chao Shen Qu, 炒神曲), Massa Medicata Fermentata (Qu, 曲) (equal parts).
Grind the above into powder. Take 2 qian per dose with a small amount of salt, decocted in water.
Note: The above formulas all consist of medicines belonging to the Foot-Yangming Stomach Channel.
San Yin Hongwanzi Pill (Three Causes Red Pill) treats deficiency-cold of the Spleen and Stomach, irregular diet leading to retained food and accumulated fluid forming masses in the intestines and stomach; or improper diet combined with invasion of cold-dampness, suddenly causing Huoluan (cholera-like syndrome) with simultaneous vomiting and diarrhea, and severe colicky pain in the heart and abdomen.
Curcumae Longae Rhizoma (Peng Zhu, 蓬术/莪术), Sparganii Rhizoma (San Leng, 三棱) (2 liang each, stir-fried with rice vinegar for one fushi [approx. 2 hours]), Piperis Nigrum Fructus (Hu Jiao, 胡椒) (1 liang), Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Viride (Qing Pi, 青皮) (3 liang, stir-fried), Asafetida (A Wei, 阿魏) (1 fen).
Grind the above into powder, melt the Asafetida, mix with aged rice flour to form pills the size of Sophora japonica seeds, coat with Cinnabar (Zhu Sha, 朱砂). Take 100–200 pills per dose at any time, with Ginger and Licorice Decoction (Sheng Jiang Gan Cao Tang, 生姜甘草汤).
Miscellaneous Formulas
Yan Shi Washing Method treats Huoluan (cholera-like syndrome) with muscle spasms.
Take one handful of Polygoni Multiflori Herba (Liao, 蓼), remove both ends, add 3 sheng of water, boil down to 2 sheng, let cool to warm temperature, and use for fumigation and washing.
Soaking Method treats Huoluan (cholera-like syndrome) with muscle spasms pulling into the abdomen.
Use abundant salt to make a decoction, pour into a trough, and soak the affected area warmly.
San Yin Vomiting Method treats Dry Huoluan (severe cholera without vomiting/diarrhea initially), Gu Du (poisoning), retained food not digesting, accumulation of cold causing abdominal distension and fullness, and Gui Qi (sudden mysterious illness). Use extremely salty salt water (3 sheng), drink 1 sheng hot, stimulate the throat to induce vomiting of retained food until empty. If no vomiting occurs, administer again; after vomiting, drink more, inducing vomiting three times in total, then stop. This method surpasses other treatments, but laypeople consider it rustic and crude, refusing to use it, preferring death by adherence to convention. For such syndromes, this method should be used first. Yuan Rong stated: After vomiting subsides, use Lizhong Decoction (Lizhong Tang, 理中汤) to regulate.
Moxibustion Method treats Huoluan (cholera-like syndrome) where the patient appears dead but warmth remains in the abdomen. Fill the umbilicus with salt and perform moxibustion for 2 × 7 zhuang (14 moxa cones).
