The *Weisheng Baojian* records: The son of Aotun Zhouxiang, aged twenty-three, suffered from fever, emaciation of the muscles, fatigue and drowsiness in the four limbs, night sweats, frequent loose stools, anorexia, borborygmus, loss of taste sensation in the tongue, and reluctance to speak. The condition came and went intermittently for nearly half a year. His pulse was floating and rapid (Fushu), but forceless upon deep pressure. This corresponds precisely to what the *Maijue* states: "Cold accumulation in the Zang organs, heat in the Ying (Nutritive) level." To obtain the essential treatment, one should first moxa the Zhongwan (CV12) acupoint to guide clear Qi upward and consolidate the Couli (interstices); then moxa the Qihai (CV6) acupoint to generate primal Qi and nourish all vessels; furthermore, moxa the Zusanli (ST36) acupoint to assist Stomach Qi, thereby withdrawing upper heat into the Yin levels below. Combine this with sweet-cold formulas to drain fire and clear heat, assisted by sweet-warm herbs to nourish the Middle Qi. Additionally, consume foods such as Jingmi (Rice, Oryza sativa var. japonica) and mutton to consolidate Stomach Qi, while being cautious with speech and regulating diet. After several months, the illness subsided, and he recovered.

Commentary: The treatment for this syndrome addresses Yang deficiency and insufficient Stomach Qi, where the ascending and descending of Yin and Yang are disrupted, causing fever. It is suitable to use moxibustion to assist Yang, and employ sweet-cold properties to drain severe heat within the blood. This case is not limited to Yin deficiency alone.

Zihe said: If symptoms include dry skin, thick and sticky phlegm-saliva, pain in the four limbs, flushed face, dry lips, irritability, restless sleep, occasional wheezing and coughing, poor appetite, weakness, spontaneous sweating, yellowish complexion, and emaciation, first induce mild vomiting using Chetiao San (Tea Regulation Powder). Subsequently, administer light purgatives such as Daoshui Yugong San (Water-Guiding Yu-Gong Powder) in doses of three liang. Afterwards, prescribe medications like Chaihu Yinzi (Bupleurum Decoction), Guiling Ganlu Yin (Cassia Twig and Poria Sweet Dew Decoction), Sofeng Wan (Wind-Searching Pill), Baizhu Tiaozhong Tang (Atractylodes Macrocephala Regulating Middle Decoction), or Renshen San (Ginseng Powder), adjusting according to deficiency and excess. In cases of hemoptysis, hematemesis, or hematochezia, which indicate blood loss, vomiting is contraindicated as it may lead to clouding of the Shen (Spirit). Do not administer hot herbs aggressively. Strictly avoid fried foods, alcohol, and wheat products. One should consume vegetables and cool liquids, but exercise caution; excessive restriction will close the Stomach aperture, leading to emaciation and a large pulse, which is a sign of death. All types of consumption diseases should follow this pattern.

Respectfully noted: For all pathological conditions, treatment must be administered only after verifying the disease through pulse diagnosis, ensuring appropriateness. Regarding the aforementioned labor-fever syndromes, they likely involve dual deficiency of Yin and Yang, with self-proliferating damp-heat, or pure Yin deficiency, or damage to form and Qi due to overwork, or heat arising from Spleen-Stomach deficiency. Using vomiting to eliminate phlegm-saliva and elevate trapped Qi, followed by regulatory therapy, can still be effective. However, I fear that if heavy and harsh purgatives like Yugong Daoshui San are misused, leading to treating excess as excess (Shi Shi) or deficiency as deficiency (Xu Xu), or if the dosage is too high, it may cause death. Conversely, for syndromes of accumulated or stored heat with excess, if Han (diaphoresis), Tu (vomiting), or Xia (purging) methods are necessary but underutilized or inadequately dosed, it also leads to medical error. Therefore, one must rely on pulse verification before treatment to avoid errors of excess or insufficiency in medication.
