According to the *Secret Manual* (Miji): This condition arises from damp-heat accumulation in the Spleen and Stomach, combined with invasion of Wind-Dampness. Furthermore, due to overexertion, sexual indiscretion, and exposure to Wind pathogens, day by day and month by month, external Wind evil invades while accumulated heat lurks internally. Within the eyelids, "Wind Millet" (small granular lesions on the eyelid margin) forms, causing ulceration, redness, pain, tearing, photophobia, and an urge to rub the eyes constantly, regardless of the season. It is advisable to use Shengfeng San (Winning Wind Powder) augmented with Jiangcan (Bombyx Batryticatus) and Chantui (Cicada Slough), or Xiaofeng San (Eliminating Wind Powder). (Ingredients: Chuanxiong Rhizoma, Qianghuo Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix, Fangfeng Saposhnikoviae Radix, Chenpi Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae, Gancao Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, Houpu Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex, Huoxiang Pogostemonis Herba, Jingjie Schizonepetae Spica, Jiangcan Bombyx Batryticatus, Chantui Cicadae Periostracum, Baifuling Poria.) First wash with Biyu Dan (Jade Green Pill), then apply Hupo San (Amber Powder). Only then can it be cured.
Prescription
Jingpixiao (Refined Saltpeter), Danggui Angelicae Sinensis Radix, Xingren Armeniacae Semen Amarum, Tongqing (Verdigris), Chuanhuanglian Coptidis Rhizoma (each 6 fen).
Grind into powder. Soak in half a cup of well water, wipe the eye through a layer of paper.
For Lanxian Fengyan (Ulcerative Blepharitis): A woman suffering from this used leaves of Fupenzi (Rubus chingii), freshly picked and softened by hand, chewed in the mouth to retain the juice collected in a small bamboo tube. An old gauze impregnated with soap was placed over the patient's eye, with outlines of both eyes drawn on the gauze. The medicinal juice was then dripped onto the lower eyelid margin. In the blink of an eye, worms emerged outside the gauze, numbering dozens, thread-like, red and long. The same method was applied to the upper eyelid margin, yielding another dozens of worms. She recovered after taking decoctions for clearing heat, eliminating wind, and invigorating blood.
For Lanxian Chiyan (Red Marginal Ulcerative Blepharitis) and Doufeng Huoyan (Smallpox-related Fire Eye): A highly effective prescription. Take half a jar of well water and half a jar of river water, add 8 liang of Zaojian (Alum Vitriol) and 2 liang of Tongqing (Verdigris), bury underground. When needed, take out to wash the eyes. Especially effective for chronic cases.
For Lanxian Feng and Doufeng Yan: 3 Xingren (Armeniacae Semen Amarum), peeled and de-seeded, ground into paste. Add a piece of Tongqing (Verdigris) the size of a soybean, grind into fine powder and mix evenly. Wrap these two ingredients in new green silk, soak in one wine-cup of well water for a while. When the water turns green, wash the eyes occasionally. Several times a day; improvement occurs after several days.
For Fengchi Daojie Lanxian Yan (Wind-induced Redness, Trichiasis, and Ulcerative Blepharitis): Wubeizi (Galla Chinensis), any amount, ground into powder. Mix with honey water and apply externally.
For Hong Yanbian (Red Eyelid Margin): Wash Ascaris lumbricoides, place on a porcelain plate, split open with a bamboo knife. Take the fluid from inside the worm's abdomen and apply to the eyelid margin.
Another Prescription: Wash and dry Fengxianhua (Impatiens balsamina), crush into paste. Apply to upper and lower eyelids before sleep. Healing occurs within a few applications.
Washing Formula
Luganshi (Calamina), Chuanhuanglian Coptidis Rhizoma (each 5 fen), Tongqing (Verdigris) (3 fen).
Crush together, soak in clear water, leave exposed overnight. Wash frequently; cure in three days.
For Lanxian Yingfeng Liulei (Ulcerative Blepharitis with Tearing upon Wind Exposure)
Chuanhuanglian Coptidis Rhizoma, Mingfan (Alumen), Chishao Paeoniae Radix Rubra, Tongqing (Verdigris), Fangfeng Saposhnikoviae Radix, Danggui Angelicae Sinensis Radix (each 5 fen).
Decoct and wash.
For Doufeng Lanxian Liulei (Smallpox-related Ulcerative Blepharitis with Tearing)
Apply the first umbilical stool (Qishi) from a first-born male infant to the eyelid margin.
Another Prescription
Fangfeng Saposhnikoviae Radix, Shanzhi Gardeniae Fructus, Pixiao (Saltpeter), Kufan (Burnt Alumen), Tongqing (Verdigris) (each 5 fen).
Place five silkworm cocoons containing the herbs, sew shut with thread. Soak in more than half a bowl of well water. When the water turns yellow-green, warm the bowl in hot water bath. Wash 3-5 times; it will never recur.
Another Prescription
Qianfen (Lead White) (2 qian), Tongqing (Verdigris) (1 qian).
Mix with water to form a thick paste, coat the inside of a bowl. Place a ball of mugwort (Ai) in an outer bowl and ignite it. Cover with the medicine-coated bowl. When the smoke burns out, scrape off the sublimated medicine. Each time, mix thickly with fresh cold water. Before sleep, dip a new brush and apply to the eyelid margin. Cure.
Ointment for Treating Canine Distichiasis and Ulcerative Eye Disease: The older, the better.
Pixiao (Saltpeter), Chaonao (Borneolum Syntheticum), Subohoye (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba - not ground), Mingfan (Alumen) (each 3 qian).
Layer Mentha leaves at the bottom of a bowl, spread the fine powder on top. Cover with a smaller bowl, seal edges with flour paste. Place on charcoal fire for the duration of one incense stick. Cool on the ground. Scrape the sublimated product from the inner bowl. Repeat sublimation and scraping until no yellow substance remains. Add Musk (Shexiang) and Borneolum Syntheticum (Bingpian) in minute amounts. Form ointment with honey for application. Alternatively, add a little Calamina (Luganshi) to this ointment, soak Coptidis Rhizoma (Huanglian) in human milk to extract juice, and use for application. Also excellent.
Main Discussion on Daojie Quanmao (Trichiasis and Rolled Eyelashes)
Li Dongyuan stated: Trichiasis and rolled eyelashes occur because the skin is loose while the eyelid margin is tight, causing lashes to roll inward and pierce the eyeball. This causes a gritty sensation, difficulty opening the eye, redness, swelling, ulceration of the eyelids, itching mixed with pain. This is caused by accumulated heat in the Spleen channel and upward congestion due to Liver Wind combining with pathogenic factors.
The *Secret Manual* states: This condition results from deficiency and weakness of the Spleen and Lungs, further exacerbated by Fire from the Heart and Small Intestine channels suppressing them. The Lung belongs to Metal and governs the skin and hair of the whole body; the exterior of the upper and lower eyelashes also belongs to the Lung. The Small Intestine belongs to Fire and has an interior-exterior relationship with the Heart; dividing upper and lower, the eyelashes also belong to the Small Intestine. Excessive internal Yang Fire causes tension internally and flaccidity externally in the upper and lower eyelids, leading to frequent redness, swelling, difficulty opening, and lashes turning inward. The eyeball is pierced, gradually forming nebula (corneal opacity), photophobia, grittiness, discharge, and tearing. Initially, administer Wubi Manjingzi Tang (Peerless Manjingzi Decoction). (Ingredients: Renshen Ginseng Radix, Huangqi Astragali Radix, Danggui Angelicae Sinensis Radix, Huanglian Coptidis Rhizoma, Chaihu Bupleuri Radix, Gange Puerariae Lobatae Radix, Manjingzi Viticis Fructus, Fangfeng Saposhnikoviae Radix, Xixin Asari Radix et Rhizoma.) Also use Huangfeng Wan (Astragalus and Saposhnikovia Pills). (Ingredients: Renshen Ginseng Radix, Huangqi Astragali Radix, Fangfeng Saposhnikoviae Radix, Gange Puerariae Lobatae Radix, Xixin Asari Radix et Rhizoma, Gancao Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, Manjingzi Viticis Fructus. Processed with refined honey into pills. Take on an empty stomach with plain boiled water.) Apply Babao San (Eight-Treasure Powder) and Hupo San (Amber Powder), and wash with Biyu Dan (Jade Green Pill). If the disease is chronic and cannot be removed, use Huigao (Ash Ointment) to cauterize the rolled lashes and remove nebula. However, this ointment is extremely potent; application must be precise to be effective. If it accidentally touches the eyeball, it will cause damage. Do not use lightly. Be cautious.
