Lilu Ointment (CVeratrum Ointment)
Sophora Root (Sophorae Radix et Rhizoma), Veratrum Nigrum Rhizome (each one tael)
Boil eight taels of lard until charred, remove the dregs, add one tael of rosin and melt it off the fire, then add one tael each of calcined alum and realgar, stir evenly. Apply when warm.
Dou Hanqing stated: Jin Ju (tendon carbuncle) arises in the arteries of the arm, where tendons reside. The arm cannot flex or extend. If not treated promptly, ulceration of the tendons and vessels will inevitably lead to disability.
Shen Douyuan stated: Mai Gu Ding (pulse bone thorn), also known as Yu Qi Ding (fish navel thorn), arises in the depression at the distal palmar crease. The root progresses rapidly. It may also arise between the elbow and arm. Red lesions are Ju (carbuncles), black lesions are Ding (thorns); those with red threads are classified as such. One should first puncture and sever the red thread with a needle, then administer Zhui Ding Wan (Thorn-Chasing Pill), and externally apply Sigua Ye Gao (Loofah Leaf Ointment). (From *Qixuan*)
Wang Kentang stated: Also known as Chuan Gu Ju (bone-penetrating carbuncle), it arises at Jianshi (PC5), located three cun above the distal palmar crease, in the depression between two tendons. It is formed by heat accumulation and coagulation in the Pericardium Meridian.
He further stated: If it ulcerates through the bone gap and pus discharges from the lateral aspect of the arm, the condition is perilous.
Sigua Ye Gao (Loofah Leaf Ointment)
Loofah Leaf (Luffae Fructus Folium), Chinese Chive Leaf (Allii Tuberosi Folium), Scallion with Roots (Allii Fistulosi Bulbus cum Radice) (equal parts)
Grind together in a stone mortar into a paste. Mix with hot wine, filter out the dregs, and drink the liquid. Apply the dregs to the axilla corresponding to the affected hand (left axilla for left-hand disease, right axilla for right-hand disease), and also to the hypochondrium. For foot diseases, apply to the corresponding hip (left hip for left foot, right hip for right foot). For midline diseases, apply to the heart and umbilicus area. Secure with cloth. Safety is indicated when the red threads turn white. If tidal fever occurs, use this method; have someone hold the patient firmly and not let go, lest the toxic qi reverse and become incurable. If the patient trembles and falls, rescue is difficult.
