*Yizong Xinfa* states: An abscess on the zygomatic bone starts small and gradually enlarges like a pomegranate; this is a manifestation in the Yang aspect, caused by wind-heat. Initially, there is redness, swelling, and pain; it ulcerates within seven days, indicating mild toxicity and shallow roots, making it easy to heal. A carbuncle on the zygomatic bone manifests in the Yin aspect, caused by accumulated heat. The color is purple with diffuse swelling, hardness, numbness, and pain; it ulcerates after approximately twenty-one days, indicating severe toxicity and deep roots, making it difficult to heal. Both conditions occur at the tip of the zygomatic bone, regardless of the left or right side, and both belong to the Small Intestine Meridian.
Gu Shicheng says: The treatment methods are identical to those for general abscesses and carbuncles, but one must not recklessly use caustic drugs. Since the zygomatic region has much bone and little flesh, one must prevent deep perforation that could lead to the collapse of the zygomatic bone; caution is essential.
Wang Kentang says: Zygomatic osteo-carbuncle presents with sudden pain inside the zygomatic bone, which intensifies overnight, accompanied by severe chills and fever. This is caused by stagnant fire in the Upper Jiao and the Yangming Meridian. Sweating can resolve it; the medication should be decocted with both water and wine. (*Yixue Zhunsheng*)

*Ling Shu Jing* states: Patients with Heart disease have red cheeks; patients with Kidney disease have black cheeks and forehead. Therefore, when observing redness, one should use Huanglian Anshen Wan (Coptis Calm-the-Mind Pill) to descend Heart fire and Buxin Wan (Tonify-the-Heart Pill) to nourish Heart blood; when observing blackness, one should use Dihuang Wan (Rehmannia Pill) to nourish Kidney water. One cannot solely attribute these symptoms to Yangming stagnant fire.
Wang Kentang says: Swelling and sores appearing on both cheeks and below the nose, with profuse bleeding of foul blood, is named Ding Ju (Ding Carbuncle), belonging to the Foot-Yangming Stomach Meridian. After three days, the patient exhibits trismus resembling spasm, opisthotonos, and upon palpation, feels as if a ding nail is embedded, with unbearable bone pain. If treatment is delayed slightly, the toxin attacks the Heart, leading to vomiting, inability to eat, coma, restlessness, and delirium, resulting in death. (*Yixue Zhunsheng*)

Gu Shicheng says: Ding Ju arises from consuming strong liquor, roasted foods, rich and greasy diets, or accidentally eating meat from dead cattle and horses, as well as old tea and stale vegetables, ingesting "sweat toxins" from food. One must not recklessly use knives or needles; instead, one should follow the treatment methods outlined in the Ding Chuang (Ding Sore) chapter. Therefore, there is no need to establish a separate main prescription.
