The *Yizong Xinfa* states: She Ding (tongue carbuncle) is caused by fire-toxin in the Heart and Spleen. A purple blister forms on the tongue, resembling a bean in shape, hard in texture, accompanied by aversion to cold and fever, with pain radiating to the heart region upon onset. It is advisable to use Chan Su Wan (Toad Venom Pill), placing it under the tongue to dissolve and swallow gradually; or take three more pills to resolve internal toxins. In severe cases, puncture with a needle, administer Huanglian Jiedu Tang (Coptis Decoction for Detoxification), and apply Zixue (Purple Snow) externally, swallowing slowly.
Chen Shigong stated: Tan He (phlegm nodule) on the tongue results from phlegm-qi stagnation on the tongue, forming a nodule that causes pain. If hard and firm, puncture with a thread needle to induce bleeding, then apply Bingpeng San (Ice and Borax Powder). (*Waike Zhengzong*)
Dou Hanqing stated: A sore forms on the tongue, resembling a bayberry, hence termed Chong She (Double Tongue). There are no external signs of cold or fever, only mental restlessness during activities. First, administer Ganjie Tang (Licorice and Platycodon Decoction) with added Zhizi (Gardenia); subsequently take Huanglian Jiedu Tang (Coptis Decoction for Detoxification), followed by insufflation of medicine. Cutting with a knife is contraindicated. (*Waike Quan Shu*)
The *Yizong Xinfa* states: Extreme heat in the Heart and Spleen steams upward, causing sores under the tongue, shaped like a plum. There are no external cold or fever symptoms, but internal restlessness occurs frequently. This is named Chong She (Double Tongue). It is suitable to use Huanglian Jiedu Tang (Coptis Decoction for Detoxification) with Jiegeng (Platycodon Root), and frequently hold Zixue (Purple Snow) in the mouth to dissolve.
Feng Luzhan stated: When this condition arises in the inner cheek and under the tongue, it is named Chong She (Double Tongue).
Tian Nan Xing San (Arisaema Powder) treats Chong She (Double Tongue) and Chong Yin (Double Gums).
Tian Nan Xing (Arisaema Rhizoma, raw, peeled, umbilicus removed)
Grind into an extremely fine powder. Mix with vinegar and apply to the sole of the left foot in males or the right foot in females. Cover with thick skin paper. If dry, re-moisten with vinegar.
Chen Shigong stated: Xia Tan Bao (sublingual phlegm cyst) occurs when phlegm-fluid follows the flow of fire-evil, condensing and accumulating under the tongue, forming a gourd-shaped swelling. It is soft and not hard, impedes speech, and causes painful discomfort. Treatment requires using sharp scissors to cut open the cyst directly, squeezing out yellow phlegm which resembles egg white—thick, sticky, and difficult to sever. Press until empty, then apply Bingpeng San (Ice and Borax Powder) externally. Internally, administer Erchen Tang (Two-Aged Phlegm Decoction) with Huangqin (Scutellaria Root), Huanglian (Coptis Rhizome), and Bohe (Mentha Haplocalyx). (*Waike Zhengzong*)
Feng Luzhan stated: Upon birth, some infants have a membrane under the tongue resembling a pomegranate seed, attached to the root of the tongue, preventing the infant from speaking or articulating clearly. This can be ruptured with fingernails to allow blood to flow, restoring function. Apply finely ground calcined Mingfan (Alumen) about half the size of a mung bean. If bleeding stops without harm but continues excessively, apply ash from burnt hair, or smear with pig fat. (*Waike Jinang*)
Wu Shi stated: If not removed, the child will inevitably become mute.
