Anyone who ingests lead powder (Galena Powder) usually does so because women, after engaging in verbal disputes and feeling so indignant that they wish to die, hope the lead will fall into their intestines and cause death. Furthermore, some women take it for abortion; not only is it ineffective, but they often find themselves unable to live nor die, and their children are frequently born with intellectual disabilities and skin sores/ulcers. Additionally, some suffer from lead penetrating the sinews and bones, leading to whole-body bone and joint pain in old age with no cure available; this is self-inflicted harm, deeply pitiable. Therefore, this section is established specifically for rescue. (Newly Added) The clinical manifestations include: a bluish complexion, abdominal bearing-down pain, and a sensation of impending death.
Empirical Formula: Mix sesame oil, honey, and red sugar thoroughly and ingest.
Another Formula: Consume large amounts of fresh water chestnuts (Dioscorea opposita var. thunbergii) to detoxify.
Another Formula: Instill/perfusion of sesame oil to detoxify.
Another Formula: Rapidly crush radish (Raphanus sativus) to extract juice and drink.
Empirical Formula: Ingest well-water drawn at dawn (Jinghua Water) with warm water to detoxify.
Instruct the patient to draw well-water at dawn and spit saliva into it. If the saliva sinks straight down like a pillar, it indicates Gu poisoning (Gu Toxin); if it floats, it is not Gu poisoning. (From *San Yin Ji Yi Bing Zheng Fang Lun*)
Those poisoned by Gu have stools that are black as lacquer, either hard or loose, or slightly reddish; this indicates Gu poisoning. (From *Qian Jin Fang*)
Sun Simiao stated: For those poisoned by Gu, holding white alum (Alumen) in the mouth does not feel astringent but tastes sweet; chewing raw black soybeans (Glycine max) does not smell fishy. This indicates Gu poisoning. If holding licorice root (Gancao) does not induce vomiting, it is not Gu poisoning. (Cited from *Zheng Jin Duo*)
*Dun Zhai Xian Lan* states: There is a fish in Hainan called the stone-head fish (Lithognathus), whose head bone is called the "fish pillow." Taking this stone to make vessels for food and drink, if Gu poison is encountered, the vessel must crack. Such effective vessels are exquisitely crafted by Fujian people, yet people only admire their color, rarely recognizing their use.
It also states: Spittle spat into clear water sinks if it is Gu, and floats if it is not.
It also states: Holding a large soybean in the mouth, if one has Gu, the bean swells and its skin peels off; if one does not have Gu, the bean swells but the skin does not peel off.
It also states: Boil one egg, remove the shell, insert a silver hairpin into the egg, hold both in the mouth, and swallow with a drink of water. After a short while, examine them; if both the hairpin and egg turn black, it confirms Gu poisoning.
The maxim states: A pulse that is tight and rapid, string-like and straight like a hairpin shaft, accompanied by severe vomiting, indicates Gu poisoning; treat urgently.
It also states: A surging and large pulse indicates survival; a minute and fine pulse indicates death.
Chen Yuan Gong said: Some traveled through Liangguang, had relations with women or enmity with men, and placed Gu in food/drink. Upon ingestion, eyes gradually turn yellow, appetite fails, and fatigue sets in. Within one to three years, without antidote, sudden death ensues. It is rumored that local makers of Gu throw various toxins along with snakes and scorpions into a jar, letting them devour each other until only one survivor remains, which becomes the "mother Gu." This is a false rumor. In fact, there are specific Gu medicines in that region, which are natural poisons. Locals treat this condition with formulas that likely use alum to dissolve the Gu, keeping it secret. Alum transforms phlegm and softens hardness. Gu accumulates in the abdomen, becoming internally hard and externally wrapped in phlegm; thus, alum serves a dual purpose, working miraculously. However, most people are physically weak rather than strong. With Gu accumulating in the chest and abdomen, the righteous Qi (Zheng Qi) is severely deficient. Using alum would further deplete this deficiency. Therefore, one must add ingredients that resolve phlegm and dissolve Gu within formulas that tonify Qi and Blood, ensuring benefit without harm, for a perfect solution. The appropriate formula is Po Gu Quan Sheng Tang (Break Gu Preserve Life Decoction).
