This refers to the water chestnut, commonly known as "Di Li" (Earth Chestnut). Select old ones with high residue content, remove the skin completely, crush them into a paste, and squeeze out the juice. The remaining dregs are mixed with water, ground again, squeezed to extract the juice, which is then allowed to settle to form a powder. This powder is washed two or three times with clear water to remove the sweet taste and can be stored for a long time without deterioration. When combined with eye medicines or medicines for treating chancre (ulcerative lesions of the genitals), its efficacy surpasses that of Calamina (Lugan Shi) and is also used to treat ulcers, removing necrotic tissue and promoting granulation (Shengji). Used alone, this powder specifically treats red eyes (Mu Chi), corneal nebulae (Yi Xing), and pterygium (Rou Rou). Instilled into the eyes, it is extremely effective and causes no pain or itching. It is indeed a miraculous pill for eye diseases caused by excess fire (Shi Huo).
Various syndromes of the throat, mouth, and tongue originally belong to Internal Medicine and were not initially within the scope of Surgery (Yangke). However, external treatment medications are indispensable as adjuncts. In recent times, many internal medicine practitioners do not stock these drugs, so patients with such conditions are forced to seek treatment from surgeons. Nevertheless, unless one is proficient in the principles and methods of internal medicine, it is difficult to cure effectively. This is why sore throat syndromes have become increasingly severe recently, resembling epidemics, resulting in numerous deaths; there are reasons for this. Moreover, there are those who claim to specialize exclusively in throat diseases. Upon occasional examination of their knowledge, they are merely mediocre. My former teacher, Mr. Zhu, had long prepared drugs with proven efficacy. Here, I record these formulas in detail to disseminate them widely. This also fulfills the lifelong ambition of my late teacher, Master Lang, to benefit living beings and save people. Although these are still common and frequently used items, compared to those stagnant traditions found in old texts, their clinical therapeutic verification may be slightly superior.
For treating sore throat, ulcerative stomatitis (Fu Kou Gan), oral ulcers (She Chuang), gum disease (Ya Gan), and double tongue (Chong She).
Washed Human Urine Deposit (Ren Zhong Bai) - 3 liang; Old Rock Alum (Lao Yue Shi) - 2 liang; Mint Tips (Bo He Jian) - 2 qian; Plum Blossom Borneol (Mei Hua Bing Pian); Clear Gallstone Powder (Ming Yao Huang) - 1 liang.
Grind each into fine powder and mix evenly. If gum disease involves excessive bleeding, add Charred Polygonum Multiflorum Root (Pu Huang Tan) and Charred Jujube Seed (Zao Xin Tan) temporarily and mix evenly.
[Formula Analysis] This is a general medication for common throat and oral/tongue conditions. The formula uses washed Human Urine Deposit (Ren Zhong Bai) as the principal ingredient to clear heat, detoxify, and guide [pathogenic factors] downward. It is an unparalleled miraculous pill for throat syndromes. The ancients certainly knew how to use this substance, but due to customs detesting its foul odor, it was often calcined before use. Calcination leaves only mineral residues, equivalent to quicklime, transforming its cooling nature into dryness and heat. The pros and cons of this difference are immeasurable. Here, however, it is finely ground and processed by levigation (Shui Fei). The purest, lightest parts are selected, suspended in water, poured out, and settled. The water is changed dozens of times until the substance is white as powder, odorless, and tasteless. This is not only essential for throat syndromes but also a key medicine for the mouth and tongue. An extremely inexpensive item becomes a good remedy when used appropriately. As the ancient saying goes, "There is magic within the foul and rotten," and this substance exemplifies that. Students of Materia Medica should not merely echo others but must carefully comprehend its properties.
