[Symptoms of Heat-Induced Labor Injury] Internal heat, restlessness, and oppression; panting, coughing, and rebellious qi; dry and cracked lips with thirst; dark and scanty or painful urination. These are symptoms of labor injury caused by long-term steaming from heat, or labor injury resulting from gan (nutritional deficiency syndrome in children).
[Etiology of Heat-Induced Labor Injury] The *Jiyao* (Essential Principles) states that diseases of labor damage arise from deficiency leading to pathogenic invasion. For instance, fatigue from long-distance travel combined with thirst induced by extreme heat causes heat to lodge in the Kidney. When Kidney Water fails to control Heart Fire, it results in dry bones and empty marrow, thereby forming the condition of heat-induced labor injury.
[Pulse Patterns of Heat-Induced Labor Injury] The pulse is often surging (Hong) and rapid (Shu). A floating and rapid pulse on the left indicates heat in the Qi level; a deep and rapid pulse on the left indicates heat in the Blood level. A floating and rapid pulse on the right indicates heat in the Qi level; a deep and rapid pulse on the right indicates heat in the Blood level.
[Therapeutic Methods for Heat-Induced Labor Injury] For patients with a floating and rapid pulse on the left, indicating heat in the Blood level, use Chaihu Guishao Tang (Bupleurum and Peony Decoction) with added Shengdi Huang (Rehmanniae Radix) and Dan Pi (Moutan Cortex). For patients with a floating and rapid pulse on the right, indicating heat in the Qi level, use Chaihu Digupi San (Bupleurum and Phellodendron Powder) with added Zi Su (Perilla Leaf) and Guang Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium).
Chaihu Guishao Tang: Treats heat in the Blood level.
Ingredients: Chai Hu (Bupleuri Radix), Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix), Shan Zhi (Gardeniae Fructus), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Bai Shao Yao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), Sheng Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix), Dan Pi (Moutan Cortex).
Chaihu Digupi San: Treats heat in the Qi level.
Ingredients: Chai Hu (Bupleuri Radix), Di Gu Pi (Lycii Cortex), Zhi Mu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Zi Su (Perillae Folium), Guang Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Gan Ge (Puerariae Radix).
[Symptoms of Heart Deficiency Labor Injury] Palpitations due to fright, mental confusion and instability, heart pain, and throat swelling. There is a sensation of obstruction in the throat as if something were stuck. In severe cases, hair becomes brittle and falls out, lips crack, and the tongue is red. Accompanied by irritability, heat, coughing, and rebellious qi, these constitute the symptoms of heart labor injury.
[Etiology of Heart Deficiency Labor Injury] Excessive mental exertion dissipates Heart Blood. Internally, desires move recklessly; externally, daily activities resemble a state of fright. Wherever thoughts arise, fire is generated. Excessive fire damages Metal (the Lung), causing coughing and急促 breathing, thus triggering heart labor injury.
[Pulse Patterns of Heart Deficiency Labor Injury] The left pulse is often floating. A floating and moderate (Huan) pulse at the left Cun position indicates insufficient Heart Qi; a floating and rapid (Shu) pulse at the left Cun position indicates insufficient Heart Blood.
[Therapeutic Methods for Heart Deficiency Labor Injury] For insufficient Heart Qi presenting as deficiency-cold, use Guipi Tang (Restore the Spleen Decoction); for deficiency-heat, use Tianwang Buxin Dan (Emperor of Heaven's Special Pill to Nourish the Heart). For insufficient Heart Blood presenting as deficiency-heat, use Mendong Anshen Wan (Ophiopogon Pill to Calm the Spirit); for excess-heat, use Daochi Geban Tang (Half-and-Half Decoction for Directing Redness).

Tianwang Buxin Dan: See previous section on cough with epistaxis/hemoptysis.
