【风痰之因】外感风邪,袭人肌表,束其内郁之火,不得发泄,外邪传里,内外熏蒸

Qin Zi said: The disease of phlegm (Tan, Phlegm) manifests in myriad ways. It is caused by internal factors such as the Seven Emotions (Qi, emotional disorders) and external factors such as the Six Qi (Wind, Cold, Summer-heat, Dampness, Dryness, Fire), leading to the loss of clear transformation functions in the Middle Jiao (Spleen and Stomach). Through steaming and condensation, it forms phlegm. Treatment must be differentiated based on the pathogenic factors involved. There are five main types: Wind-Phlegm, Damp-Phlegm, Dry-Phlegm, Stagnant-Phlegm, and Food Retention. Among these, Damp-Phlegm and Dry-Phlegm can arise from both external contraction and internal injury; Stagnant-Phlegm and Food-Phlegm arise only from internal injury, not from external contraction. Yin (Fluids) is primarily associated with Water, manifesting as more cold and less heat; Tan (Phlegm) is primarily associated with Fire, manifesting as less cold and more heat.
[Symptoms of Wind-Phlegm] Headache and body pain, fever and aversion to cold, vomiting and coughing with frothy sputum and rebellious Qi. This is the syndrome of External Contraction Wind-Phlegm.
[Causes of Wind-Phlegm] External contraction of Wind Pathogen invades the muscle and surface, binding the internally stagnant Fire, preventing its discharge. When the external pathogen transmits inward, internal and external steaming occurs.
[Pulse of Wind-Phlegm] Mostly Floating-Slippery pulse. Floating-Rapid indicates Wind-Heat; Floating-Tight indicates Wind-Cold. If a Deep-Slippery pulse is seen, it indicates Wind Pathogen knotting internally. A Surging-Large pulse is easy to treat; a Deep pulse... [Text cuts off here].
[Treatment of Wind-Phlegm] Differentiated into Wind-Cold and Wind-Heat. For External Contraction Wind-Cold, it is appropriate to use Acrid-Dispersing methods to release the exterior, such as San'ao Decoction combined with Xiao Banxia Decoction.
San'ao Decoction combined with Xiao Banxia Decoction: Treats syndromes such as Wind-Cold phlegm-cough.
Herbs: Ephedrae Herba (Mahuang), Armeniacae Semen Amarum (Xingren), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao), Pinelliae Rhizoma (Banxia), Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens (Shengjiang).
Xiao Qinglong Decoction: See previous section on Overflowing Fluids.
Shen Su Yin: Treats Wind-Phlegm cough.
Herbs: Ginseng Radix (Renshen), Perillae Folium (Zisu), Peucedani Radix (Qianhu), Puerariae Radix (Gegen), Pinelliae Rhizoma (Banxia), Aurantii Fructus Immaturus (Zhike), Platycodonis Radix (Jiegeng), Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium (Guangpi), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao).
Add Perillae Fructus (Suzi) and Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium (Juhong) for rebellious Qi. Add Pinelliae Rhizoma (Banxia) and Arisaematis Rhizoma (Nanxing) for excessive phlegm. Add Perillae Fructus (Suzi) and Peucedani Radix (Qianhu) for panting.
Jing Fang Gan Jie Tang: Treats Wind-Heat phlegm-cough.
Herbs: Schizonepetae Spica (Jingjie), Saposhnikoviae Radix (Fangfeng), Platycodonis Radix (Jiegeng), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao), Menthae Haplocalycis Herba (Bohe).
Jing Fang Xie Bai San: Treats Wind-Heat entering the Lung, Lung-Wind phlegm-panting.
Herbs: Schizonepetae Spica (Jingjie), Saposhnikoviae Radix (Fangfeng), Morus Cortex (Sangbaipi), Lycii Cortex (Digupi), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao).
[Symptoms of Damp-Phlegm] Body alternating chills and fever, edema of face and eyes, aversion to cold, heavy head, body pain with inability to turn or lie sideways, vomiting, nausea, irritability, fullness, and lack of thirst.
[Causes of Damp-Phlegm] Sitting or lying in damp places, or venturing out in wind and rain, allows Dampness to invade the body. It interacts with the body's fluids, coagulating and accumulating. As stated: "Wind and Rain attack the deficiency of Yin, causing disease to arise from above and form masses; Clear Dampness attacks the deficiency of Yin, causing disease to arise from below and form accumulations." This is the cause of Damp-Phlegm.
[Pulse of Damp-Phlegm] Pulse is mostly Floating-Large. Floating-Slow indicates Wind; Floating-Choppy indicates Dampness; Floating-Slippery indicates Damp-Phlegm; Deep-Slippery indicates stubborn knotting.
[Treatment of Damp-Phlegm] For body heat and Floating-Large pulse, it is appropriate to disperse Wind and eliminate Dampness using Qiang Huo Sheng Shi Tang. For chest fullness and Slippery pulse, it is appropriate to resolve phlegm using Er Chen Tang.
Qiang Huo Sheng Shi Tang: Releases the exterior and eliminates dampness, so phlegm transforms naturally.
Herbs: Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix (Qianghuo), Angelicae Pubescentis Radix (Duhuo), Saposhnikoviae Radix (Fangfeng), Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma (Chuanxiong), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao), Ligustici Wallichii Rhizoma (Baiqun/Ben).
Er Chen Tang: Resolves phlegm and promotes diuresis to remove dampness.
Herbs: Pinelliae Rhizoma (Banxia), Poria (Fuling), Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium (Guangpi), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao).
Ping Wei San: Dries dampness and resolves phlegm.
Herbs: Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (Cangzhu), Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex (Houpo), Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium (Guangpi), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao).
