The Academician Lin served in Hainan. His son was very intelligent and loved eating sea clams, which were always prepared for every meal. In the eighteenth year, his complexion suddenly turned blue-green, he became emaciated, and suffered from frequent nocturnal palpitations. Everyone believed it was Laozai (consumptive disease resembling tuberculosis), but all treatments failed. He then summoned Doctor Du for diagnosis. Doctor Du said: "This is not a disease." How did he know? Although the face was thin and the color was blue-green, the spirit was not diminished. He asked the scholar what he usually liked to eat. The answer was: "Mostly local delicacies from Hainan." Doctor Du said: "Just take more medicines that generate body fluids, and the illness will heal itself." After two months, the complexion gradually became ruddy, and there were no more nocturnal palpitations. The Academician invited Doctor Du to ask about the principle of this illness. Doctor Du said: "Suwen states: Salty taste induces thirst; this is a syndrome of blood depletion due to excessive salt intake. Now that salt has been eliminated and medicines generating body fluids are used, and since the person is young and vigorous, blood can be easily generated, leading to a ruddy complexion. Only when this condition resolves can peace be restored." The other doctors treated it as Laozai, which was incorrect.
The wife of Wei Dexin stayed in a room upstairs at an inn. At night, robbers raided and set fire to the building. She fell off the bed in fright. Since then, whenever she heard a noise, she would faint from shock. Various doctors treated it as a Heart disorder, but none were effective. Dai Ren examined her and diagnosed: "Jing (startle/fright) is Yang energy entering from outside. Kong (fear) is Yin energy emerging from inside. Jing occurs without conscious awareness. Kong occurs with conscious awareness." The Foot-Shaoyang Gallbladder Meridian belongs to Liver Wood. The Gallbladder governs courage. Fright injures the Gallbladder. He ordered attendants to hold her hands, press her onto a high chair, and place a small table in front of her. Dai Ren said: "Madam, look at this piece of wood." He struck it violently. The woman was greatly startled. Dai Ren said: "I am striking the table with wood; why are you frightened?" After waiting a moment, he struck again, and the startle subsided slightly. After another short while, he struck three or five times continuously, then struck the door with a staff, and had someone strike the window behind her. Gradually, her startle settled. Wei sighed: "What kind of treatment is this?" Dai Ren said: "Treat Jing by making it ordinary (Ping). Ping means common/ordinary. One does not startle at things seen frequently." That night, they made noises on her doors and windows from dusk until dawn, and she slept soundly without hearing them. Jing is the upward floating of Shen (Spirit). Striking the table from below makes her look down, thereby gathering the Shen. Twelve days later, even thunder did not startle her.
